What difference does it make? In what way would it be a bad idea?

I think he's the best man for the job but his being gay has nothing to do with that.
His ethnicity or sexual persuasion or gender wouldn't have any impact on his leadership ability.
Why do people think it would?

How is Apple doing under Tim Cook? With more cash in the bank than Ireland's ?206 Billion national debt, I would say; better than we are.

IS he going to be the 1st openly gay leader of a country ?. As if so its crazy to think Ireland a Catholic country will have a gay leader.

The prime minister of Luxembourg is gay. In fact, he and his husband have visited the Vatican.

In the past, Iceland and Belgium have had gay leaders also.

It's crazy to think that the OP is actually serious.

I don't care if he is gay or straight just as long as he can do his job. I would hope that Leo will be a true statesman and representative for us. In any case it's important for countries to be professional when dealing with other countries I think. For the sake of good international relationships, I hope that other countries can look past Leo's sexuality.

I'd much prefer him to Coveney, the lad doesn't seem to have any backbone at all.

The only way his sexuality could come into consideration is in his ability to improve/maintain good diplomatic relations with some of the less enlightened parts of the world like the Middle East, Uganda, Sudan and Roscommon.

The fact he has not commented since is a pretty good indicator that he was just was bored and wanted to bait AH.

    It appears to have worked.

Jesus christ, who cares what his sexuality is ??? !!!
The point is this should be irrelevant like what his favourite colour is.

I'd actually be more worried about how young he is, I would want a more experienced politician leading the field.

He just clearly wants Teashock on his CV so badly that I'm weary of him. If he attempts to widen the tax base so that everyone no matter what their income pays some income tax and does something about the marginal tax rates thereby relieving the pressure on the "squeezed" middle I'll be happy.

Yes. If he is good at his job then it's absolutely a good idea.

I don't think we should self congratulate but we should at least acknowledge that society has made significant progress regarding treatment of gay men.

People really need to get a grip of themselves..

They'll shortly move on to where the name 'Varadkar' comes from and his dusky complexion, no doubt :(

Couldnt care less if he gay, straight or tri-sexual. Why on earth should that have a bearing on his ability to be Taoisheach ffs.

100% irrelevant whether he's gay or not.

No one gives a sh1t if our PM is gay, straight, black, white, male, female. That's one of the great things about this country. Leo has the same chance of the top job as anyone. Thing is he's a complete prick so that is going to be his downfall. He's not liked by his own party let alone the public.

Dress him up in drag and send him to on a state visit to Isisland lol

Seriously though a mans sexual orientation shouldnt be an issue for getting the job

Im sure most of the world leaders also wouldnt give a damn who he sleeps with either , well maybe Trump and the Middle East but Im sure the vast majority would see that as a bonus :D

Is the concern that he'd try to get the leg up on Trump on his next visit? He's gay, not a sex addict.... or desperate..... To the op's only semi valid point, the self congratulation could be annoying but it has the happen. It'll happen again the next time someone outside of the "social norm" is involved in something note worthy. And the time after that..... until it becomes the "social norm" and no one gives a **** that he's gay.

I'm afraid your delusional if you believe that eviltwin.
There's a huge swathe of FF/FG people down the country aren't ready for anything else other then a white straight male married secondary school teacher.
I can assure you of that.
Simon Coveney would be a shoe in if it was put to a public vote.
    FG party know this too.

He won't be taken seriously if he happens to visit any Islamic country..in fact he might well get fecked off a roof.

We shouldn't have a gay Taoiseach is as relevant to leadership ability as suggesting that we shouldn't have a left-handed Taoiseach.

I don't care if Vradkar's gay, but some of the problems that could arise would be any delegations with the Middle Eastern/African countries, Russia probably also. Those countries don't exactly have sterling records when it comes to women or homosexuals.
