So if Leo does succeed Enda, there is sure to be an orgy of self congratulation about what a modern and progressive little country we are. However, is it really a good idea to send as our main representative abroad, an openly gay man?

To be honest, why do you give a toss what his sexual orientation is?

I'd be more concerned about whether he is capable of doing the job or not.

Explain why you think it would be a bad idea, or why it matters one way or another. Would you be happier with a gay woman? A straight woman? Someone transgender? Or is your preference solely for straight white men to represent Ireland?

I couldn't give a toss about the fact that he's gay.

I do however, give a toss that the most likely person to be Ireland's first openly gay Taoiseach happens to be one of the biggest narcissistic arseholes I've seen in politics. His campaign on cracking down on "welfare fraud" just shows where his allegiances lie, considering he never made a fuss about the actual fraud that happened in this country before, during and after the crash.

If there's one thing I like about Varadkar, it's that he doesn't play the "gay card" to get him out of jail, but that's about it as far as compliments go.

You have been asked why it would not be a good idea OP, what is your thinking on it? It is true that it might be more difficult for him to be taken seriously in a few countries, but the same can be said of women and black leaders, and they seem to cope.

For that reason alone (upsetting bigots) I'd be tempted. Like when Desmond Tutu was made Archbishop of Cape Town by the Anglican Church in apartheid South Africa. Meant the racists in government had to respect protocol and treat him like a white dignitary.

(I'd have other concerns about Varadkar though, like his record, which seems to be a lot of spin and maybe not that much substance. Still, no better alternative comes to mind.)

My lack of confidence in Leo would not be due to him being gay. He's just a busy body. Sticks his nose in gets a whiff, makes a comment and moves onto the next thing.

I have no issues with him being the next leader of Ireland as being honest enda was not even that bad ..... Ireland has kind of recovered and there jobs out there if you look and he took over this country when it was a shocking mess of a place.

IS he going to be the 1st openly gay leader of a country ?. As if so its crazy to think Ireland a Catholic country will have a gay leader.
