The Sextant is fab... good grub... and the beer garden is really sunny!

Not sure for grub but two of the better beer gardens in Cork are on Barrack St. - Tom Barrys & Annie Macs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,185 ✭✭✭✭rob316

My wife was in Rachel's Saturday, she told me her butternut squash Risotto was €25 and her friends pizza was €25. Are those prices real?

I ask as my wife isn't the best when it comes to prices. ;)

Hi , any reccomandations for a nice beer garden for pub grub on a nice day like today in Cork city?

Couldn't go wrong with a Pizza in the Franciscan Well.

Thanks for the replies I think I'll try the sextant today.

On a side note where has the best chicken wings in cork?
I think the east village / Soho wings are the best that I have come across.

while i did feel the prices were ridiculous i dont think the pizzas were 25 euro is she maybe including drinks and a side in that?

Not sure but €25 is scandalous for a Risotto. She was fairly underwhelmed anyway regardless of the price.

Like I said my wife isn't the best with prices so just wanted to confirm it here.

Anyway as much as I like to eat the offerings in Cork, Rachel's is one I'm not interested in heard too many negatives and don't want to be supporting this sort of pricing for food that isn't of that caliber.

has anyone ate in Cask yet? would you rate it?

I had a couple of things there, I found them a bit over-complicated for pub food or tapas if you get me. Very tasty, and beautifully presented, but be warned it's small and kinda pricey, which suits it's market there next to Greenes.

Yes, no doubt about it, it's expensive, but it's not 25 quid for a pizza. Mother of god the stories get legs altogether in Cork. I think the pizza was either 15 or 18.

I wanted to go back and try it again, because the first time was opening week. We enjoyed it that time, but I've read all sorts of stuff here since about them having no bread or butter, and people struggling to talk to eachother with the noise levels... which wasn't the case at all when I was in, so wanted to check have they completely changed the set-up before I bring work visitors in. I need it to be consistent if it's for work. I tried to book a Friday night two weeks in advance and there was nothing available, so it doesn't seem to be dying on its feet quite yet.

i heard from another source that pizza was €25 as well?? not rushing to go in any event - have heard mostly bad reports.. and its all "considering the price".. its so expensive it would wanna be superb but apparently thats not the case with 90% of reports i have heard

Keep seeing burger pics from the Silly Goose lately, anyone been? Looks like more of a pub grub type place than an actual restaurant though...

Went there a few months back all round the food was very meh and we left most of it on the table.

The food looks great and great ideas for food that's about it. It's just very very bland ?. Like thr burgers tasted like they where reheated in the microwave and the chicken wings had about one bite of meat on each.

There is other way better burger places in cork that you can go over silly goose.

Did some more eating in Cask. Nice nice nice. We had guac, a meat and cheese board and I stole some of my friends chocolate cake. Some of the things we were ordering were off the menu, they told us they change the whole menu (including drinks) every 8 weeks, and it was the last night of the old menu.

It's a very popular spot at the moment, we went in on saturday at about 6, got the last table. Crowd is a funny mix... older wealthy city people, the green's restaurant regulars I'd say... mixed in with mainly women in their 20's and 30's in skyscraper shoes. There were a lot of drawn-on eyebrows.

    Sounds horrific.

Finally went to Lily House in Blackpool. Happy with the food choices, as for lunch you can have from the big menu or a menu with 5 starters and 5 mains where you pick one of each for 9.90. Had the WonTon-soup that tasted really well and the shredded chicken that was also good.
Overall a good addition to Blackpool for the office people there, to have a food option added there, that is not fast food.

Had Bunsen for the first time and have to say, it's a good burger but overpriced & I really didn't enjoy eating there tbh - it was very bright, you're on top of the people next to you. I'd go back for some munch on the fly but but would recommend Son of a Bun ahead of it without question because you'll have a bit more space & a more relaxed vibe, some sides and much better milkshakes

Agreed. While the burger was lovely, it was overpriced. The sides (chips essentially) were poor imho. When we were in there we took the stools by the window as it was so busy which was a disaster because the wait for food was so long. Our backs were broke by the end of it.

I think somebody earlier mentioned that next time they'd just get a double burger. I'd agree with hat.

Had my first Bunsen experience last night too. Was not what I expected at all, place is quite small and I felt almost rushed or something in there. It seemed just a little too casual too or something, hard to put my finger on it.

Thought the hand cut chips were amazing, the burger was good but a little too thick for my tastes, was gonna get a double, glad I didn't!

Son of a Bun still holds the crown for a proper dining experience but I did enjoy the food and will be back if it's a quick bite I need.

People, you need to understand that Bunsen is just fast food. High end fast food. It's not for a dining experience, it's to have a burger.
I thought the burger I had for under €7 was good value

Don't really get how it's over priced? In relation to what?

    Cheese burger and fries:

    COQBULL: 13.50
    Sun of a Bun:12
    Bunsen: 10.40

True - I guess what I mean is value for money in relation to those places & what they offer

Was it busy and how long did it take? Wondering if it's doable in an hour with a few minutes walk as well. :)

We were in an out well under an hour. They were quiet quick as starter and main are brought out on one plate. Still plenty of it.

Personally I just were eating from Aroma recently, so that's the only one I can compare it too. It seemed fresher and more tasty still it cannot compete with a food stall in a back road of Beijing. :pac:
