Makan on Washington street I find is the best one. daily specials change everyday and are great value.

    I have been there i think 3 or 4 times now ?.

I had had a different dish every time but some how they all taste the same like the food is nice and fresh but i cant tell the difference from there Pad Thai to there Chicken and Chill Star Fry.

But I do love the Sago Currys there Red curry for 7 euros is such good valve also i love there Salt and Chilli chicken as well.

Flame i had a take away from it there when it was in its older location it was shocking bad there curry was and was not worth what i paid for it at all. It all went in the bin and went and got something else to eat so will not be back.

Ramon i have not been to in ages i used to go after work for the 6 before 6 two or 3 times a day before i moved in with the girlfriend and have not been in since as its quite out of the way for me now so have not went back.

Have had brunch in Salt three times in the past two months or so & have to say I think it's the best in Cork - the Kiwi Brunch is probably the best i had, but the Full was different and I was stuffed after it, also the scrambled egg & red pepper dish was excellent too.

There was a queue out the door today so wandered on and tried Goldbergs and have to say it was lovely, nice and bright in there, plenty space, nice coffee & the full Irish was spot on there.

Both of ye are right about the SuperValu and youghal connection to huckleberry they are bought in and filled and decorated on site from a bakery in youghal but that bakery also supplies some supervalues (Ryan's in frankfield is one of them)
As for ramen it was awesome, but since the two lads left (the chefs that were supposed to be on the missing Malaysian airlines flight) and the backer left and set up for themselves it's gone to pot got dinner in Douglas a few months ago and the quality and flavour is gone. Was sad to see chilli padi go but apparently the rates in cork are a nightmare for new set ups

oh my mate got sick from the place on blarney street so never tried it..

how was the quality of the chicken/meat? and flavour?

i honestly do not like ramen - flavour is poor as it meat content - i know its cheap but if i am ordering in /eating out i am willing to pay a little more for quality

I got the crispy chilli beef, it was very good and plentiful, but probably not the best for judging quality to be honest since it's deep fried. Flavour was excellent though.

Went to Umi Fallafel yesterday for lunch. Had the 4 fallafels & tabouleh and sauces and liked it a lot. Tasty and fresh. Excellent value lunch deal incl. soft drink or tea & coffee for 7.50. Generous portion too. Nice place for lunch although seating is a bit crowded. Staff was nice and efficient, you order at the counter and the food is brought to your table. Will certainly be back.

Just got around to trying Bunsen.

I just had a hamburger, cooked medium, all the toppings (Pickle, onion, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, mayo.)

The pattie was much thicker than I expected (or wanted) but it was really, really good. Nicely seasoned, good beef flavour, perfectly cooked (a bit pink and juicy), nice squishy bun, not overly dressed.

Pretty much a perfect hamburger. Didn't try any sides.

I'd be curious to try a thinner, wider pattie to see if it would be better.

If you like a straight up, classic burger then this place is for you.
If you want anything else or a choice of lots of toppings, then it's not.

Agree completely. It's an old school decent hamburger. Kind of refreshing. Had a burger in Soho recently and God it was an awful compressed bland meh thing.

So finally tried Rachels. To cut to the chase, not great.

Arrived around 5pm, was busy and booked late. Welcomed and seated. Bread came which was basically cold toast, and some ok brown. Ordered starters. I had the prosciutto with goats cheese and a breaded egg with salad. Quite nice. My friend had prawns which were served whole with a butter sauce. Very tasty but serious work for the amount of meat and I felt they should have included some sort of tool to remove the meat.

For mains we both went for steak. 10oz sirloin with bernaise. They arrived after a considerable wait. My friends was medium well and cooked perfectly. I ordered medium rare, and it was blue. Completely raw at least 85% of the interior. I sent it back and the waiter immediately acknowledged that it was unacceptable. This led to a completely unsatisfactory situation where my friend had finished and my main was 15 minutes away. When it came, it was fine, ok. The sides were ok too.

The most unimpressive thing was what happened next. I assumed the main would not be charged. The waiter came by and said that because of the steak being raw, we could have free deserts. We didn't particularly feel like them but had them. Got the bill and were charged for one desert, apparently only one was comped.

Overall, if there were no issues with the steak, it would have been ok. I felt it merited a poor rating for the evening. The bill was €96 for 2, with no alcohol.

In fairness to the one Allen I don't think she has much to do with the place other than put the name over the door for Reardens.

Nope I agree, but she does have the name over the door all the same.

For the steak orders above, get yourselves out to the Thady Inn and enjoy yourselves.

I've never had a decent steak anywhere in the city. Don't get me started on the hot rock they do in Soho. 400 degree stone on my table so I can pay you while I cook my own food poorly? People seem to love it, Absolute Bloody Genius.

Porridge in Velo with a lovely cup of coffee yesterday morning, followed up by lunch in Umi Falefal - had the taboulah & halloumi bread sticks which was nice - the taboulah was really bitter to be honest but it was still quite tasty, friends had the Palestinian and raved about it so looking forward to going back & trying more from the meny

    Bitter? Are you sure?

I can't think what would be in tabuleh that would make it bitter.
Sour and lemony, yes but not bitter.

I personally find parsley to be bitter, so something like tabbouleh with all that parsley is too way much for me. Maybe he has similar tastebuds?

    Could be, I suppose.
I love parsley but I can see how it might be bitter to some.

Was wondering whether it was the bulgar wheat as I'd never had it before but think it was just too much lemon tbh, it wasnt off putting or anything just very strong tasting

Salt, had brekkie there over the weekend.

I just wish I could like this place. I live nearby, and people drag me there for chats... but anyway. It's grand, but only so so. A fruit Scone was over- sweet, not a scone by my measurements, more of a very dry cake. Not nice at all tbh. Less sugar, more butter needed.

Companion had eggs royale, these were good.

Drinks were muddled. Just not what we ordered, and one forgotten.

There is something wrong with the height of their chairs vs tables. My elbows are up around my ears trying to butter something in there.

Love the place, although I've never been in on the weekend.

The damn good burger really is damn good.
Thier Lyonnaisse sald is possibly the best salad I've ever had in Cork.
    quesadillas is really nice.
As for the bread and butter pudding. nyom!

The staff are usually on the ball I've never had an order / drinks mix up

I would be interested to see how it holds up in the evening time when they offer the tapas menu.

We went to the Strasbourg Goose over the weekend, and I have to say it was thumbs up all round, especially the slow cooked beef and the flourless Chocolate Marquis. The waiter couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely return !

No, the building is for sale but the tenants (Strasbourg Goose) remain unaffected.

Any recommendations for somewhere to eat on a Wednesday night? Herself wants to try Boojum, does it live up to hype or is it still finding its feet as per previous reviews?

Will be around half 8 or 9 o clock so not really looking for a full sit down meal, just something quick(ish) and tasty! Neither of us are fussy so willing to try anything

I think it's solid. It's the best takeaway burrito in the city - but it is still just a takeaway burrito so don't expect anything life-changing.

Tasty, filling, good service and good price as far as I'm concerned.

Might give it a go so, we'll just be looking for something tasty after a long day and a burrito should fit the bill!!

Well it was very much open last weekend ! No I think someone saw the For Sale sign on the building and extrapolated that it must have closed. Not true.

I'm glad to hear hear that. We had a big family meal there before Christmas and were very happy with it. They were very helpful.

Just to follow up, went to Boojum the other night. Very fast service and very tasty, i'd rate it nicer than La Calavera in Douglas and alot better than that guy who goes to the farmers markets (can't think of the name).

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful as well in fairness to them!
