    In my two years in Africa the local newspaper, all eight pages of it, was great entertainment.

    One story I remember was of a man standing beside a drainage ditch (about six feet deep and dry as a bone in the dry season), and pointing to where he saw a mermaid. This city was about 500 miles from the nearest sea.

    Another newspaper report was of men riding around at night on the backs of hyenas (like jockeys). This was supposed to be in the city suburbs. The nearest hyenas were miles away. Hyenas are common in folklore all over Africa.
