I think misogyny is just part of the internet in general though? I often think it just comes under the banner of "Trolling".

Gamergate obviously was kicked off by a woman and it's safe to say the alt-right are not Hillary Clinton fans BUT the idea that they just have a blanket hatred of women is simply not true. They have definitely targeted individual women, I can argee with that.

My experience is that "The Internet" disrespects men and women alike. Maybe the specifics of that disrespect differs depending on the gender of the target but I am pretty sure all groups are treated equally badly online.

You are right the lady who got punched there is being ridiculed based on her looks by lots of people. I'm not sure what can be done about that though and I'm not sure that it's misogyny.

President Trump (haha) is constantly attacked on the internet based on his looks and I don't think he identifies as a woman. You surely do not think that attacking President Trump (haha) based on his appearance is misandry, do you?

That's fine. I understand the whole "power plus prejudice" argument and honestly find it to be compelling to some degree.

However, just because you can't label bad behavior a certain way doesn't suddenly make that bad behavior OK.

This could attract men that may be more misogynistic.

Alt right has both female and gay icons in the likes of Lauren Southern, Pamela Geller and Milo Yiannopoulos.

I was thinking about this and I reckon that any community that has vastly more men that women could easily come across as being misogynistic.

The same could be said about any community that has vastly more women would be seen as having some kind of "anti-male" bias.

Hear me out. Most of the adult population is heterosexual and most will have been in at least one relationship with the opposite sex and will have probably had numerous crushes and first dates etc. It follows then that the most hurtful or humiliating or abusive situations in people's lives will have involved a member of the opposite sex.

So if you have, for example, a majority male community online and you ask "guys, what's your worst relationship experiences" you will have a thread full of men who have been in abusive relationships with abusive women and men who are bitter about rejections etc. This could easily be perceived as some kind of hotbed of misogyny, right?

That's not to say that misogyny doesn't exist. Of course it does. I'd say though that only a small percentage of people have an outright irrational hatred of women.

You'd probably expect to experience a heightened sense that women are being objectified in these kind of communities as straight men tend to find themselves attracted to, well, attractive women.

Not defending anyone here just saying that maybe human behavior is a bit more complicated than the explanations that are often presented to us.

As for spurring on, I actually come across this argument quite a bit, the idea that it is necessary to use force against 'Fascists' (or whatever luckless soul ends up daubed as such).
