Dublin, Kerry, Mayo, Tyrone, Monaghan, Donegal. That's a clear top 6 anyway. Cavan got relegated but far from disgraced themselves in Division 1. Don't forget Tipp have won Division 3 and also humiliated Galway last year and ran Kerry close enough in Championship too. They have every right to claim to be a better side. Although tight margins I'll admit. I'm a Mayo man admittedly, so I know all about how a county can get carried away. There are signs of it in Galway at the moment with comments like "fair to say we are a top 5 team now". Galway could count another Quarter Final appearance this year as a very successful year IMO.
There's not too many getting carried away, you're right about the top 6 as these counties have all been very consistent the last few years but the Monaghan for all their consistency in the league and in Ulster they've been poor once they've got to Croke Park. They haven't progressed beyond a quarter final and aren't serious All Ireland contenders and it looks like the bookies agree with me. I don't think Tyrone have the forwards to win an All Ireland especially if they continue with their current system. Donegal have had a great league campaign but its too much to expect a team with so many U21's playing to win the big one, when Mayo put it up to them last week they buckled.
As for Galway the first 2 aims of the year would have been to get promoted and then win the Div 2 final in Croker, so objectives have been achieved so far. Next on to the probable game with Mayo, if we can beat Mayo I'd like to think we can make a semi final but if we get beat then a quarter final is the realistic aim.

    There's no top six.

There's a top one, a second who are probably a bit away to trouble them consistently(under age success may change that).

Then you've Mayo and Donegal who have at least been there and there abouts for a while now.

As for Monaghan, to echo above they've done nothing in the championship and Tyrone can't even produce a reliable free taker.

Galways main problem is their kick outs, defending and attacking.
We've giving extra attacks away cheaply and losing some that we wouldn't with a bit of Dublins techniques(what's good for the goose, is good for the gander)

From open play we're no worse than a few of those Division one teams but that's not a big claim as to win the AI will take a fair bit more.

PP have us at 6th favourites for the All Ireland at 20/1. For some reason Cork are only 33/1 and then Monaghan are out at 40/1.

Monaghan's record in Croke Park is terrible, they've had some good teams in recent years and haven't got passed a quarter final. I do think they'll win Ulster this year and I think this could be the year they make a semi as long as their top players stay fit.

Cork and Kerry get easy runs to the Munster final so they're both generally one game from a quarter final.
Price would reflect that to an extent.

I think you'll find every Ulster team has much longer odds, due to having a way harder run to a QF. Galway are only two wins against potential average teams from a QF. Even if they lose to Mayo they will most likely face Division 2 and 3 opposition in the qualifiers. Whereas Monaghans route in Ulster is extremely tough.

It's a poor part of the GAA. Championship restructure is badly needed. The ease at which Kerry, Cork, Mayo & Galway can reach quarter finals compared to Ulster teams and Meath, Kildare etc is very unfair.

I know this is probably something and nothing but does anyone wonder why Finian Hanley is still in the squad, He hasn't played any competitive for the past few seasons. Is it beyond the reams of possibility that Kevin is gonna throw him in shortly? Maybe its just me but I cant imagine why a man that has been such a good servant to the county during the doldrums and has achieved so much is happy to sit there on the bench without a plan going forward?

I think Galway are maybe just outside the top 5-6, but they are definitely on the up and are a breath of fresh air. Playing D2 can give young fellas a great shot of confidence for championship - some of our younger lads are suffering because they are trying to step into D1 from u21, and its just a tough ask. You aren't unlike Mayo were in 2011, and that is no bad place to be in.

Obviously if we meet Im hoping we beat ye, but Im genuinely hoping ye drive on a bit this year. We nearly had an all ireland semi final shootout last year, maybe we can this year.

One certainly could not question Hanleys commitment to Galway. Amazing that he's still sticking around.

Eddie Hoare also still seems to be on the panel (based on photo in tuam herald).

Hanley got dropped because of his roasting by AOS which was no real fault of his own as he had zero support and no pressure on the ball coming in. Id like to have seen him play a couple of challenge or even league games at full back with Kyne moving to centre back. Farragher is no CB but may do a job sweeping and I think Kyne has the look of an excellent CB.

Hanley is staying with the panel but as soon as he is cut loose that's it,won't be continuing with club football.Eddie hoare will not get game time but wants to remain part of the panel.

I can kinda understand Hanley's position.

But not Hoare - who'd stick around in that case? I'd imagine some players will be cut between now and championship and that he'd be part of that.

    Doubt it(Hoare being cut).

Sure players get injured and others have to move up.

Considering he was starting games under KW, I don't think it's a push to think KW would use him as a sub if 2/3 players got injured.

If he's happy to stick around as things are, I don't see why you'd cut him off.

    Hanleys case is very different.

Hes old enough now, was a mainstay for over 10 years, appearances for Ireland.
I don't get why he'd want to stick around for a second year of making up the numbers.
I'd have left like Duane did if I was him :D

Seems to be a genuine buzz around the football panel for the first time in probably 13 years but we won't really know for sure till after the Mayo match whether lads stay. Not surprised lads are happy to fight for a place but I can see Hanley waiting in the long grass for when we'll potentially be facing another monster full-forward. He definitely should have had more League time but at the same time I can't fault KW and co. for wanting to try out new faces like Walsh.

McInerney down to start at CHB tomorrow. Would love to see them give him a proper go. He's deceptively fast and is grafting for dirty ball much better than last year. Himself and Tuohy are really impressing me this year. Glad that Flynn is on the bench too. He's done nothing to keep his spot so far this League.

Hoare didn't appear in the league and I think was only a named sub for 1 match I think. It would take a lot of injuries for him to come into contention. I can't see it anyway.

I'd much rather some of the U21's to be the guys 'making up the numbers'.

But you'd have to admire Hoare's commitment.

Unbelievable stuff in the U21, 10 points in ten mins!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

This is eerily like KK in Leinster final 2012. They're bullying Kerry and they could still be another 5 points ahead. Looks like a big wind for Kerry in the 2nd. Cooke is unreal.

Some amount of wasted play now though, wide toll is frightening.

    Talk about Jekyl and Hyde.

Flawless first 15 and atrocious second 15.

The decision to go for goals on two of the misses was poor(the easy free and the one that was blazed wide).

Should be at least 10 up.

They've already conceded a goal ffs

11 wides for Galway so far. They'll rue those missed chances.

    And about 4 goal chances.

Red card. 14 men often harder to beat than 15.
