So hopefully mine will arrive next week. Suppose now is a good idea to think what to use it for exactly :D The phillips hue while cool is very expensive, any ideas for <€100 smart home accessories? A nest is useless given the heating for the house.

Get a Chromecast for your TV. Netflix & Spotify accounts?

If compatibility with Harmony is actually coming down the line, the Harmony Hub is worth picking up to control your tv.

Has anyone with an original Home been able to set their phone language to UK and the Home still work yet, now that the UK one is out?

Yes phone on Android switched the home last week to UK voice. iPhone were able to do it a week or two earlier...

Should have my Home next weekend. I would rather a new google account, I have an honest fear of it knowing my search preferences and somehow telling them to a different person who is asking the question.

So do I need a new google account on an android device first ? i.e tied to the play store etc?

How do I make it play RTE radio 1?

    Anything cool/issues I should know?

Would like to be able to show it off, sans the "oh wait let me google why/how this works"

Just ask it to! 'Hey Google, play RTE Radio 1' works for me.

Support for TP-Link Kasa smart products, including their Smart Plugs has now been added to GHome :)

    I can now say:
    "Hey Google, turn on plug"

Multi user support on the way, cant wait, hope that brings in full google apps functionality though!

Received mine yesterday, got it up and running with no issues, have a TP link smart plug (socket?) working off it too.

Need to get a chromecast next and maybe some LED strips to plug into the TP link HS100 to show off a bit, boiling the kettle, just before half-time in the match, is all I managed with it so far !!

Might pick up another few HS100 and plug in some lamps etc. around the house too, but I suppose smart bulbs is what I should be getting.

    and a Harmony Companion??!!

Save the plugs and get a set of Hue LED strips & bulbs? They work pretty well through GHome. I rarely think to use my phone to change the lights around since I got the GHome.

The Harmony is good, but get at least one remote - I got the most basic one and it's perfectly fine. At the moment, GHome has very little function through Harmony. I can turn on and off the TV and sound system, and that's it. I'm sure they're working on full support, but we've no clue when it'll come out.

Got our Google Home on Tuesday and thus far it has been great. Listening to the news in the morning is wonderfully convenient.

Has anyone managed to get the shopping list integrated with their preferred supermarket brand? It would be cool to be able to add items to your shopping list and have it automatically appear in your Tesco shopping basket.

I start with BBC World and then swap over to http://tunein.com/radio/Newstalk-1060-s15123/

I haven't tried it, but the Tesco app seems to have IFTTT integration, so it might be possible to do it that way.

Any time I ask it to play BBC World/BBC World Service it tells me it can't find it or some such. No problem with Irish stations. Tried with US and UK English.

Ah ok - I thought you were talking about the 'how does my day look' feature. I can only get US or BBC sources on that - I was wondering if there was any Irish station support for it.

Perhaps try to configure the news sources in the app?

My aunt arrived from the US this week with a G Home i asked her to pickup in Feb... Just at the same time the UK ones are released! Ah well,

So can i just go ahead and set it up as a UK version, (i.e. not having to do the workarounds for the US version as mentioned before?)

You can now control Harmony Hub with Google Home, similar to how it works Alexa.

In other to set it up, you need to find Harmony under Services in the Google Home app.

Once setup you can give it commands like:
"Hey Google, Ask Harmony to turn on the TV"
"Hey Google, Ask Harmony to increase the volume"
"Hey Google, Ask Harmony to change to channel 70"

Now that GHome does this, I'm not sure what I'll use my Echo Dot for any more. They both can now do the exact same things!

Has there been an update for the GHome app released? I haven't seen anything pop up, and still just have basic IFTTT on/off controls.

How do you get one of these?

    Is this a real question?

If you want to know where to purchase a Google Home device, I suggest you at least read back... at least the opening post...

I'm desperately torn on this. I'm holding out in the hopes that Apple will announce something in the home space, but I think google are going balls to the wall on it and it'll be too hard for them to catch up.

Google are really getting their act together right now with their hardware and apps.

Apple are years behind, anyway, they don't innovate, they just copy everyone else's tech and bastardise it so it's completely incompatible with everything available and makes you buy their hardware to use it. There is nothing to be gained by them entering this market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,093 ✭✭✭OU812

Agreed on most parts, however I'm hoping they pull it together.

I'm exclusively Apple and have too much invested in the infrastructure & ecosystem to jump ship now.

I do admire google's innovation though I wish they'd put more into nest.

If you're waiting on Apple for up to date or new tech then you'll be about 1-2 years behind the rest, always.
Although when you do get it, it'll look nice and do the job.

Wait and expect to pay way more and do not expect it to play nice with anything non apple. Personally the main advantage I think GH has is the willingness of both Google and third parties to add to it and let it evolve.

As far as I know, there's no info about Apple releasing anything any time soon, never mind sorting out the issues it'll have at launch. While you're waiting, you may as well buy the Google Home and see how you get on. It's only 120 quid, and if Apple release theirs any time soon, you'd get a good chunk of your money back selling it on Adverts.
