Thought the marian sketch was brilliant today. Cure for red wine hangovers to wash it out with a bottle of white.

Is there a grain of truth in it or is it just so not the case that it's funny? I can't tell.

Ah here, how long is it since you listened? Every week she walks in to studio, coughs a few times, asks everybody if there will be a hard brexit or a soft brexit .... and she might as well be talking about people like soft butter or hard butter for the amount that she knows herself. Just throws out the buzz words and a few high pitched exclamatory interjections. Job done, back on the plane to France.

No idea how Callan gets away with what he says though. That's him that does the posh voiceover for her show. And he was on the show not so long ago. I'd say that she must despise the sight of him.

Haha I'd say she really does, she certainly didn't afford him a warm reception when he was last on. He's been on the Sunday show as a political commentator too and he was actually excellent, I was really surprised.

Infairness, she doesn't put a huge about of effort in at times. I'm amazed he gets away with it though, being a bit bored on the job is very different to being plastered drunk.
I suppose he did do that skit about Michael D having an affair with his driver though, so maybe he just has licence to make up what he likes.

The stuff about the Guards and "All Ireland Hide and Seek Champion" Shane Ross is excellent too. I'm really enjoying it this year whereas other years I was non plussed.

Does he write all his own material or is there a team behind it?

VEry hard to write 20 mins of new material every week.

Does Callen do the voiceover for Marian's sponsor?
It sounds like him. I'd have to listen back, but I think it's for a car manufacturer?

Marian's been around a long time, I'd say she has a thick skin.

I don't think Callan is implying that she's an alcoholic, more that she has a very leisurely life and enjoys it, a bit like Dobbo and his bottle of Chateuneuf du Pape.

On a side note, I happened to meet Marian's son recently. As sound a guy as you could meet, the polar opposite of the likes of Lottie Ryan, lovely guy who is is passionate about horses (and we're talking more piebalds in Ballinasloe than the Curragh), and has negative interest in the pretentious media bubble. If he's any reflection of Marian, I'd say she's sound as a pound too.

Do he still do that routine? I'd love to have a compilation of those sketches: Michael D and Kevin playing hide and seek in the Aras - "I won't be in the closet, you certainly won't find me in there...I'm used to squeezing myself into tight holes.":D

I wouldn't be surprised at all. The reason I listen to the show, is not simply for the mimicry - but for his take on the currrent political situation.

I particularly enjoy his pointing out the complete hypocrisy of someone like Michael Healy-Rae - who complained about distressed property auctions, and then turned around and bought property at a subsequent one, who pretends to speak like the "ordinary people" but who is simply a greedy bastard - Ireland's Donald Trump, with his "flat-cap" branding and all.

No marian this week. Must have been on the gin.

For the most part, I disagree with what the OP says. Of course a lot of it is useless and over-done, but there's no such thing as failure... it's all only an experiment. The point being, that there are always going to be few brilliant bits in there. Don't forget, Callan has to come up with material quite fast considering he does a 25 minute slot once a week.

Callan makes some serious points with his humor. I assume the politicians don't listen to it at all, but they'd have you believe it's just child's play! But what would that make them? toddlers?

Apart from Vincent Browne, Callan (and Mario to a lesser extent) is the only one who really grills politicians. Amazing that RTE are willing to have him say the things he does on air, considering the DJs have to be so careful not to offend anyone!

Good final episode in the series...CK has definitely improved since it first started.

And a pretty good Tony Blair as well. A hero of yours across the water no doubt, WMM. :D

Any time I've heard it this year, he has been very good. And usually very up to date as well.

The Joe Duffy/Michael O'Leary sketch was good.

The Joe Duffy/Michael O'Leary sketch was good.

    Yes it was.

Sense a bit of strain in there .

    That's not good in comedy.

    Needs to be more relaxed.

    Good listening though...not great.

I thought the Joe Duffy/ MOL segments and the closing act, involving Varadkar and Paschal Donoghue shilling Ireland to foreign investors (public anger may go up as well as down'), were the best parts of the show.

Otherwise, many of the jokes didn't quite land. The Mary Lou item was especially disappointing. Started out well, but fell a bit flat.

Not a great start following the long break. Here's hoping Callan gets back into his rhythm for the next show. When it's good, it's really good.

Couldn't see the joke there at all...

He's not a comedy writer imo. He should get someone else to write the material and he concentrate on the delivery.

He doesn't write the material by himself. Others co-write with him, such as Fiona Looney.

I liked the dig at leo and Eoin myself (rugger buggers to sort housing).

It's looking like varadkar will be as good a source of fun for them as Enda.

Tbh with trump and brexit if ya can't do good satire in this day and age ya probably shouldn't be doing it at all.

Thought it was a good start. The shows come along say from its beginning s.

Shinner jokes write themselves, such as "destroying the border in Ireland while creating one in Spain".

    such as Fiona Looney.

    That could explain it.

Some good take-offs (some bad) but script is Junior Cert standard. Embarrassing.

Callan’s impersonation of Leo Varadkar is spot-on.

    Oh wait... :pac:

The Newstalk breakfast sketch from last night was very good. The Williams impression sounds more like Michael O'Leary than Paul Williams, but the material is bang on (if you have ever "endured" the NTBS you'll get it).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,727 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

I said it before but his MaryLou is appaling.

Not even close Should be simple just concentrate of the rrrrrs

The Gerrrrda Siochana. Also always get in the name check as she does.

    On Drivetime...Question asked.Response.. Well Meerrrrry .....

Oh god, in hindsight, could that Ray D'Arcy sketch not have been pulled in light of his father's death. Especially given that he was talking about "death" in the sketch.

Just catching up with Callan’s Kicks after giving it a wide berth for several years. It has improved massively. The Leo and Murphs double act is an absolute riot.

I'm really surprised that so many people don't like this show. I think the gags are funny, the impressions often credible, but more importantly I think there's an important commentary on some important political issues in there too. Everybody else seems to have forgotten about the the Garda corruption. Nobody else will dare mention Denis O'Brien. I think there's a useful truth in a lot of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,066 ✭✭✭✭neris

the ifta skit and the gabriel byrne rant werent far off the mark on last fridays show. I like the des cahill skits he does to. its much better then gift grub which has really gone past its sell by date

I would have a lot more respect for Callan's focus on Denis O'Brien if he, Callan, wasn't working for Rupert Murdoch's Sun. To much hypocrisy there for my liking.
