Seeing as it is currently on their website, and has the heading "eir Price List 2017",
it would seem to be applicable.

In respect of a downgrade of a level for eir Fibre to the Home, an administration fee of €50 (inc VAT) shall be charged by eir and payable by the Customer or (ii) the downgrade shall be without charge subject to this agreement becoming subject to a minimum term of twelve (12) months commencing on the date of the downgrade (For Downgrade from eir Fibre Extreme 1000Mb this charge will be set to zero until the 30/06/2016)

That seems very reasonable ....... you can downgrade by paying €50 without renewing the contract, or downgrade and renew the contract for 12 months without any payment.

And I presume that anyone who starts on 150MB can upgrade at any time to a higher speed and just start paying the extra monthly charge?

When you sign up it will be the best chance you get to go 1Gb.
In my case I could possibly sell it to the other half as "this is how much the new broadband costs".
If you get 150Mb in you'll never be able to upgrade as it'll be "sure it's fast enough as it is isn't it ?".

And I can't see any price decreases any time soon.

Having said that, will probably go for the 300Mb package myself.
Have slowly been investing in CAT6 and Gb hubs and a decent WiFi router that should deliver close to 300Mb

I spent the last year saying to myself 'of course I'm going for the 1000Mb, but as time went on I realised would I even need that speed, several people who I know who have VM and fast FTTC knocked sense into me, you just wouldn't see 1000mb being used in most real world usage other than the speedtest. The final icing on the cake is the fact that no matter what package you opt for, you have the same 1tb data allowance and that's what really stopped me from taking up the high end 1000Mb package. To me the 300Mb package is the sweet spot and even that speed would get properly used in most cases.

IF Eir had their packages arranged by data allowance over speed, I probably would have coughed up the 75 euros no bother for 2tb allowance or something like that.

Well Evan the extremely efficient and friendly KN networks technician has just left and unfortunately there's been a problem.

I knew before hand that it wouldn't be possible to use the existing duct as there's no access inside the house. Evan said the only way would be to remove the floor in the hall.....obviously a non starter.....

So it was outside to have a look at the overhead option. And the problem. I assumed that any overhead cable would go from pole across the road to our chimney, not so according to Health and Safety they are not allowed to place overhead cables above the fascia level of our house so it would have to go from the pole across the road to our fascia level. Any delivery to the house oil etc would have snagged on the cable. Also the cable would have to come down so sharp that it would be too low as it crossed the road.

My only option is to have a pole fitted in the garden to one side of the house and bring the fibre from this pole to the fascia level. Not ideal but the only solution. There's no cost to me as EIR say they will cover this as part of their installation. The location for the pole has been GPS'ed and it looks like the pole will be installed next Thursday and I'll have to have another installation appointment set up.

We've waited for years so what's another week or so.

I'll keep this page updated when I finally get it sorted.

    D.

Ok.....so Eir seem to be struggling at the moment...I've had calls from 2 different EIR reps in their Call centre this morning...one to arrange the installation of my FTTH for tomorrow morning??? and the other to arrange the erection of the pole.....for the 28th of April...provisionally ...a case of left hand not knowing what the right hands doing.....looks like I have a bit of a wait ahead of me...

Eventually got a call from kn today to do the installation. It was a simple install, bring it in where copper is going in, across the attic and down into sitting room.

KN WILL NO LONGER INSTALL FIBRE INTO THE ATTIC (since last week) AND WILL ONLY INSTALL FIBRE 1 METER INTO THE HOUSE :( (health and safety grounds)

They wanted to loop the cable across the facia and drill through the wall by the front door. Madnesss........

    Cancelling order this evening

Lightning Fibre is 10 times faster and best of all, there are no limits on usage*.

    Is this not a cap?

I'm going to go with the 1gbs, I don't need it, but I've been 25 years waiting for internet that wasn't as slow as a snail. So I just want to go crazy :)

I already pay €115 for 3.5mb/s and one mobile, so I am used to the big bill.

I can get 1gb/s + one mobile + TV for €130. For existing customers you get the first 6 months of 1gb for the price of 150 line, so the bundle is €87 for six months. It will end up working out at about 80 euro more spread over 12 months.

What is the best flow for buying it to avoid the issues, it officially goes live Wednesday.

Order online then phone them the next day to make sure?

I had the KN technician up in my attic last Wednesday morning going through what I needed to have ready for my installation (whenever they fit the new pole outside). He never mentioned anything about the attic being out of bounds to them and had no issues getting up and letting me know where to have the sockets / power supply positioned / where to bring the Ethernet cable from and to etc. He was happy to bring it into the attic. If this is the case then I think I'd better give them a call to confirm because I'm just about to have an electrician do the work recommended by the KN Technician.

apparently this has only occured in the last week. obviously some kn engineer fell through the attic or something. Its openeir are preventing this.

I'm happy enough to go with Eir but I have to see if I can even get fibre at this stage. The eircode not passing FTTH could end up leaving me on ADSL, but I'm gonna take Eir's word that the only reason my orders are failing is because my premises is not live for FTTH till this Wednesday. I'll know soon enough if I'm really in trouble or not.

    1m into the house?
    That's not very practical
You're cancelling the order completely? Are you going with another supplier?

Whether you buy from eir or Pure, it will still be KN doing the install.

    Two potential causes here:

    A. KNN are a mixed lot. One guy you get will be a former TE lad with a mountain of experience. The next could be from a road crew who's only ever dug footpaths. Really is a lotto.

    B. If its actually policy, its cost not H&S I'd wager. An attic isnt working at height. If they can minimise run lengths they be in and out and get the next work order done. $$$.

Just been in contact with OpenEir and they say that my installation will go ahead as per the Technicians description, so that's an attic installation from a new overhead pole. Unfortunately I'm looking at a 3 week delay until the pole is erected before the actual installation can go ahead.

I should have known, it's Ireland, after all. Well that attic thing means I'm out. The only way I even got my phone line installed in the house was to be imaginative with my own ducting and routing and to climb the pole myself to where they had the coil and to bring it into the house my way and then ring them up and ask them to finish it off. So unless they were to leave a coil of fiber up on the pole and come back when it was poking out of the wall....

Eaves level is just asking for trouble.

tell them that you'll pull the fibre through the attic for them.

In the normal household what uses are there for 1000Mb package other than upload speeds ?
Any devices that would make use of the speed?

Practically no. Very few CDNs will even pump that much to one client.

Bit like a ferrari, the needle may go high, but you'll only see it on a track.

The only usage I can think of where the 1000 would be used is if you have a family of 4 or house sharing with 4 individuals who all like to download regularly, often at the same time, assign each of them 250 megs and everyone's happy.

The upload would be handy for those who regularly upload large video files to vimeo/youtube or other large file sized work related projects.

As for mobile devices, I've rarely seen them use more than 150 megs. Anyone ordering 1000meg FTTH to power their ipad is just wasting good money when the 150 is more than enough.

Asked KN by email about this and got a very curt "get him to ask his provider" response

I understand not wanting low cables but are people really that hung up on having a hope drilled that they're going to pass on FTTH?

    Update

    Crazy stuff really......

So a technician called last Wednesday and refused installation due to the location of the existing copper wire duct. He recommended overhead from the pole to a new pole in the garden. Another technician called that evening and marked out where the pole was to go and said that the pole installation crew would be back Fri or Sat morning. They never turned up so called Eir yesterday and was given a pole installation date of the 28th of April!! Come home from work last night and there's a pole installation crew erecting the pole. No phone calls.....no warning...just 4 lads in high vis and a massive truck parked in the driveway.....fair dues as they were out there until 20:00....I'm not complaining...far from it but you really have to wonder at the lack of communication between KN and Eir.

Going to call this morning to see if I can get the rest of the installation completed now.

Just heard on the radio this morning there is due to be a press conference about the 300,000 & the NBP from Minister Nachtan. They said to date, Eir have made FTTH available to 12,000 households.
Does that match figure that were being counted last week no the thread?

Not far off - quoting navi's post
In reality the true number is somewhere between 16770 and 21890 and I would err on the lower of the two numbers.

Weren't Eir supposed to have 100K connected by last month??? OMFG what a disgrace, looks like a leopard doesn't indeed change it's spots.
