I can only guess that the logic is that the cable coming in is secured in ducting/overhead/to the wall and therefore not able to be damaged by a bend radius that exceeds specs and breaks the fibre, esp since it will be slightly armoured for outside use. Break that and the whole run has to be done again from the pole most likely. Also this 'drop' cable from the pole probably varies in diameter, dependent on what cable the team that installed it had (judging by the photos I've seen). As such some might be the right diameter to put a LC connector on but other cable may not - too rigid etc.

They want to standardise. The ~1m fibre cable supplied from the ODP to the ONT is an inside cable and if damaged by the homeowner (or the kids) can easily be replaced.

Have you any idea if that 1m cable can be substituted during fitting by a much shorter cable?
I am recalling pics of the fittings which clearly show an untidy loop between the two 'boxes'.
Some means - where the fitting determines - to have the two boxes connected without an untidy mess of a cable would be desirable.

Looking at the pics I think the cable that runs from the ODP - ONT *could be* a LC to SC cable. It's hard to say if the ONT is LC and the ODP is SC.... Some pics show the ODP with a square green box underneath which makes it look more SC but others have it without....

EDIT - I think in hindsight it looks more like a SC connector on both - which would make more sense anyhow.

    So this

Since they are green they are APC anyhow

Was just on to Eir, and couldn't manage to order Broadband only, so went with 150mb extreme, 12 months contract. Agent says 5-7 days maximum until installation.
I 'll believe it when I see it!
I'm in Kinvara, Galway, 2 mile out, and they only started the splicing here yesterday...

From the email I got to confirm order:
"Bundle Name: eir Complete Broadband & Phone
    Your Bundle Includes:
eir Talk Off-Peak Mobile 60 eir Fibre Extreme 150Mb
    Contract Length: 12 Months
    Promotional Price: €60.00 per month"

I have to admit to not being much the wiser TBH.

I see the connectors in the first of the pics are different to the connectors in the third pic on the page.

    :(

I ordered standalone - doesn't seem to be something they are encouraging people to buy. No promotional price but for 150 it's €55 per month 18 month contract.

Not sure I follow. Pic 1 and Pic 3 are the same cable just viewed from the top of the LC connector.

Anyhow that's LC - SC. I'm fairly certain that the cable needed is SC - SC but until someone pulls the cable out of the ODP and ONT to confirm or I get it installed myself, I'll have to guess based on the limited photos!

So this would be the one I believe

I couldn't see the option to buy broadband only anywhere on the site, and the chat assistant couldn't help either. Where did you find it overtime?

Yep, same as. I called them up just there, more in hope than expectation, and I could Pre-order stand alone 150MB BB for €55/ month or with TV for €70/month. I'm a bit out of the village, she said FTTH will be live on 3rd May, but can schedule installation now.

You can't buy it online, phone or in Eir retail only €55 150, €63 for 300 and €75 for 1000

I'm sure that the bundles and prices are constantly changing but I ordered last Monday the 27th of March and completed yesterday. Cost for my 150mb standalone is €40 per month for the first 3 months and €55 thereafter on an 18 month contract. That was over the phone to EIR.

Absolute rubbish! If I was you, I would cancel that order immediately - you can order the standalone broadband option from both the website (and their live chat option) along with over the phone.

However, it's not something that they want people to do so you have to look for it. If you are talking to someone (either on the phone or live chat) and they tell you that option is not available, ask to speak to a different colleague or their manager and watch how quickly their answer changes.... ;)

    What about this??

    https://www.eir.ie/broadband-only/

Absolutely itching to order - no way of knowing when the Eir reps will be around for special offers?

definitely wait till you know that your road/area is live and ring/order online as soon as you know.

OK, I see that option now -
"Unlimited Extreme Fibre broadband - up to 150Mb. FREE unlimited access to eir Sport eir Talk Pay As You Use Home Phone. If you don't use it, you don't pay for it."
So it is called Broadband & Phone, but if you don't use you don't pay? Odd.
If I cancel my order by phone, and then re-order, will it mess up my new order, or delay installation?
Also, the contract length seems to vary a lot. I got 12 months but a lot of people seem to get 18 months.
Maybe the standalone is only available with 18 month contracts?

If you don't use it, you don't incurr usage costs.

If you cancel current order, you will be given brand new order number, appointment date etc

Just called them, and the agent said rather than cancelling the order, she would make a note on the order and I can amend the contract when it is installed by calling the agent. She also quoted 18 month contract, but when I said it was 12 months she said they would honour that.
But I have nothing in writing in that regard. Anyway, at this stage will take whatever I get.

Thought I'd ordered fibre but they have no record when phoned, and didn't get any email confirmation, so I'll try again in a couple of days.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

This is Broadband only (but with a phone - so not really ONLY) - as far as I can see you can only order 150 with that. Standalone is just FTTH and nothing else with 18 month contract - there doesn't seem to be any promotional pricing. €55, €63, €75

When you select the 150 can you not then change it by hitting the plus in the circle to the right and then click on a higher package?

I'm getting confused (not unusual) regarding the landline phone option. We're nowhere near ordering yet as we've been pushed back to Autumn 2017 in the last update. No sign of any new work on our road either.

We'd like to keep the landline phone, but will it mean paying more (or separately) for the line rental along with the fibre order? We don't use it that much, but still have family who prefer it to mobile. I'm a bit hazy on VOIP options, but willing to learn if it saves money.

    You get a phone free.
eir Talk Pay As You Use Home Phone

Pay as you use home phone included at no extra cost
If you don't use it, you don't pay for it!

It'll be a VOB or VOIP line but thats invisible to you and any callers.

I'm following this thread for my parents which are due to get it early next year. Can i ask if all the phone points around the house will be able to used with the new system? They are split out up in the attic, can the new telephone wire coming out of the router be split as normal? Also they have an alarm system which sends text messages when it goes off, does anyone see any issues with this? Thanks.

Does a VOIP phone line work during a power outage, though?

Got on to chat today and we have successfully placed an order for 1gbps fibre!!!!

They just upgraded my existing €115 broadband + mobile bundle. As an existing customer upgrading I get 6 months discounted to €95 then it goes to €140 for 12 months.

I wanted to cancel the phone line and add TV so it would end up being about 130. They said she couldn't do that, she could only order fibre there, but once the order was in the system I could call the loyalty team and they would tweak the bundle.

I expect that to be an ordeal :)

No, not unless you've a suitable UPS (battery backup) in place for modem router and VoIP device and even then only for a limited time

The alarm doesnt send texts over the landline. That service was killed last year. Youll probably find it doesnt send texts at all, or has been upgraded to GSM (sim card).

Its a simple job to feed the old points back off the VOIP line.

Nope. But neither would any cordless phone.

Chances of an ESB outage and the local cell tower being impacted is small, add to that 6hrs of battery backup for them and you wont be left stuck in all likelyhood.
