Sunday papers review is moving to podcast from next week on until the end of the premier league season.

That's great that they will be at least still doing it

I only caught half of the book section today but it was a great listen.

Malachy Clerkin is usually a good listen too.

Declan Lynch is enough to make anybody switch off. The only thing that raises his monotone delivery is when mention is made of Athlone Town's 0-0 draw with AC Milan in St Mel's Park over 40 years ago

Lynch has grown on me. His propensity to launch into long-winded anecdotes about obscure sportsmen and journalists used to annoy me. But I like it now.

Nobody has more sympathy for Seamus Coleman than I do, but the coverage of the two tackles is ridiculous at this stage.

Probably reflective of the lack of anything else worth talking about in the game, plus the somewhat selective appeal of tomorrow night's game...

Joe interviews Brian Kerr: "We must start with Coleman."

tbh there's not much else to talk about from that game.

it wasn't a great game with no other real talking points.

If the Bale tackle and Coleman injury hadn't happened and the trumpet man wasn't trumpeting, the sports show presenters and paper columnists would have been in big trouble over the weekend.

Lol, that trumpet man certainly got the attention of a few of the regulars in my local.

I never heard such swearing at a television in my life.

They dragged the ar5e out of the tackle on Sunday trying to analyse what was going through Taylor's mind before the tackle, and what happened in the dressing room bla bla bla bla. I suppose they have to fill the time....
Newspaper review on the weekend is enjoyable though. Or should I say, was enjoyable.

The book review last weekend was excellent imo.
    Was a very pleasant surprise.

The stuff on Ricky Hatton was great. And Andy talking about before the fight and the walk in to the ring. They should have asked him a lot more about boxing and his own boxing career.

They spent the whole football show analysing Ireland's crucial defeat to Iceland last night. It was a new low.

Kilbane is OK.but doesn't seem to like it when someone challenges him or disagree with his point. Comes out with the strong Lancashire accent of ' I'm not having that'

I don't think the audience will turn the dial. I've never warmed to the "new" Off The Ball team and listen to the show a lot less than I did. It's an almost bomb-proof formula though. It's aired at a time when there's little else to listen to on radio here. I doubt the audience figures for Radio 1's Arena are anything to write home about. So they've got plenty of hours of an evening to talk about sport and get updates/reports on live games. Maybe that type of show was always going to succeed, regardless of who was presenting it.

I used to be an avid listener (even after the original team left) but am listening to OTB less and less these days - mainly because I've subscribed to the Second Captains World Service (highly recommend), which gives me my daily dose of sport. However, even when I'm travelling in the car in the evening, I find myself listening to Game On more regularly than OTB. Never thought I'd see that happening! Maybe the more condensed formula of Game On means the presenters have less time for political ramblings/self-indulgent soliloquies, which the OTB team are prone to these days.

For all the criticism OTB get...Newstalk compared to RTE radio or Today FM bring so so much to the table sports coverage wise. If we just had RTE covering sport...good god it would be unbearable

I like listening to both Second Captains and OTB, I agree with come of the criticisms people put forward for both though.

In relation to your post, you talk about the self indulgence of the OTB crew yet laud Second Captains who are often the champions of self indulgence. Just an observation of someone who enjoy both in small doses.

I lauded Second Captains because I find their sports coverage the best around. Nevertheless, they are also guilty of self-indulgence - I don't want to be accused of double standards here! :D Although, I find their ramblings (particularly those of Ken) to be a lot more humorous and whimsical than those on OTB - which I find to be a lot more serious and pontificatory in nature. Just my view on it though..

When they started bringing their political opinions into the show I went right off them.
