I actually do :) but that may be because I'm a big Barca fan. I know a lot can't stand him and I don't necessarily think they are wrong, just that I generally enjoy his pieces.
I do think he's a better writer than speaker.

I'm not a fan of Pat Nevin and again I think I'm in the minority there.

PeterTheNinth, do you like anything about this show?

It's on at a convenient time when I'm driving home. :)

I like Pat Nevin. To me Graham hunter is the exact opposite to Pat Nevin. It's subjective I suppose

Pat seems like a really sound guy, and he has a great attitude, but I cant understand a word what he's saying. Even when he's on "crystal clear ISDN".

Cant say I like Pat Nevin or Hunter. Could do with more Tim Vickery

I think it is patently obvious that Graham Hunter is a langball.

Has anybody seen the piece Ger Gilroy wrote about the marriage referendum last year, I didn't like it's tone, basically he labelled everyone who voted no a homophobe, granted alot were, but u can't tar everyone with the same brush. Just taught the piece was badly written. Check it out if u get a chance. Google Ger Gilroy "We've won the war".

Ah. I see. I had missed that.

He's a bull****ter of the highest order. He pretends to have these deep and meaningful relationships with a whole host of top Spanish players, but it's all just self-aggrandizing nonsense. To them he's just another face in the media scum who annoys them in the mixed zone after matches.

Graham Hunter is the biggest spoofer in all of football journalism - you'd swear he conversed daily and deeply with Demigods.

This is one of the things I really dislike about him. He will display absolute outrage on topics which are viewed by many as acceptable to be outraged about - i.e. be very outspoken on very safe issues. This is an underhanded way of showing oneself to be controversial and outspoken without actually offending a single person (other than me).

I listen to the podcast of the previous night's episode most mornings on my commute.

As soon as the Graham Hunter piece comes on I switch off and delete the podcast. And I'm a Valencia follower, so I'm usually interested in hearing about Spanish football. He's a bad combination of a thoroughly unlikable character, and a very uninspiring pundit. His twitter strop at Colm Parkinson was hilariously revealing.

Tim Vickery, on the other hand, is, as others here have said, very enjoyable to listen to. Philippe Auclair too imo.

I don't know... he seems genuine enough in his beliefs to me.
I think it's a bit unfair to suggest he's using support for gay rights as a way of making himself appear edgy.

But shur he works for Newstalk, so if they didn't support that they may have just gone and looked for another job.

    National Vote: Yes - 62% No - 38%
    Newstalk Vote: Yes - 100% No - 0%

No problem with the outcome of the Referendum, I read his piece again this morning I I taught it was a scathing self-righteous vitriolic one size fits all article.. One would think if u voted yes, it was a day of celebration not a day to put the boot in, but I feel Ger couldn't resist patting himself on the back and proclaiming to the world how much of a a social justice warrior he is, while at the same taking DOB's pieces of silver.

I've seen lots of people reference this point when discussing this show or Newstalk in general. I am curious why people feel that being an employee of a company owned by DOB should preclude someone from having an opinion on some matters.

Are people who work in the HSE not allowed an opinion on bad practices within it for example?

Sid lowe is good as well, but he kind of went with the Second Captains when they left. He's only been on OTB once, maybe twice, since then.

Just on that Ger Gilroy thing, id agree he could do with a boss to clip his wings on the ridiculous interviews. They're a vehicle to shoehorn his long winded thoughts in front of every question, seeking agreement and approval from whoever he's interviewing. I liked the show more but cannot listen when he's running the show from Wednesday on. When him and Nathan are in the studio together, that's a while different level of smugness.
Joe might be precious at times but the good I think definitely outweighs the bad. There's a bit of proper banter and his interviews aren't showcases for his opinions.
Ways to improve the show = more of joe and put Ger into the producers studio

I think Ger has underachieved when it comes to his own ambitions in journalism. He has been with Newstalk for 15 years now and failed in his many opportunities outside the sport desk (breakfast, utility sub etc). I think that is the reason he tries to shoehorn politics and current affairs into sports broadcasting so much.
Now I despise Trump and all he stands for as much as anyone but to listen to Gilroy talk about the impending apocalypse in Chicago last November was ridiculous. The pro Clinton bias may have been an effort to please dinny though.

I love Pat Nevin but that's because I'm an Everton fan. I agree about Vickery, he is superb, they should have him on every week. Philippe Auclair and Julien Laurens are also always worth listening to.

I thought Gilroy by far the better of the two when he was paired with Claire Byrne. She was dreadful. Not particularly bright and not that pleasant a person either. Yet look at how her career has gone since.

I completely agree. Claire Byrne was dreadful on that show, a total lightweight and charmless.
Yet RTE have given her a major career. News reading auto cue is her level.
I don't get it but I don't get a lot of things with RTE

HSE employees regularly share their concerns about bad practices and that's to be applauded, but I can tell you one think for certain anytime DOB is in the news, the last person to give his opinion is Ger Gilroy and to be honest I don't really want to here it, just stick to the sport while on air.

    Emmet Malone.

PeterTheNinth, do you like anything about this show?

Begrudgery is Ireland's national sport sure, surprised it's not talked about more on this show! I really don't get the anti-Gilmore brigade. I think he's alright, I don't get a bad vibe from him. Lately I'm actually getting more of an arogant vibe from Dave McIntyre, who I have always liked.

I do feel the show is going downhill a bit though. Woolie, for me, was hilarious but I can understand if a lot of people didn't like him. How Kilbane was hired full time is a joke - he only has knowledge on soccer and even his opinions on this are so tame and careful. Some of the guests are terrible too - John Giles, Dan McDonnel and Emmet Malone are awful to listen to.

Well he did really let a lot of his supporters down when he went and broke numerous election promises.
