Hows everyone keeping up in terms of study?
I'm feeling like I'm wasting time with all the free classes I've had recently, its just feeling like the calm before the storm...

I start off great on Monday, practice my music, exercise, pay attention in class and get a good bit of study done in the evenings. Feel really organised.

Then by Thursday I'm doing my maths homework down the back of English, yawning like hell in class and then pissing away the evening on my phone.

    I lack consistency.

By the way does anyone know how to become fluent in French in 3 weeks? :pac:

I literally get how you feel completely :p My study habits deteriorate significantly as the week goes on!

What I realised for French last year is that if you learn off stuff about yourself, your hobbies, your family, your school, what you want to do next year, your home town, any holidays you've been on, etc. you'll actually come out with a decent grade. The basics make up about 90% of the oral. It's really rare you'll get onto the environment, or racism or terrorism or anything like that unless you're the one to bring it up! Focus on the basics and you'll do well!

I tend to split my study evenly among all days so I do some work but never quite enough or at least I feel like its not enough. It haunts me to think of when August comes I don't get what I need and have to repeat since all my options are quite high.

As for french, I hear if you can find a babel fish that would certainly help you out for the aural.

Does anyone have the solutions/answers to the DEB Maths mock paper?? Our teacher is refusing to give us the marking scheme and won't go through the paper. Makes it really hard to correct my mistakes

I got some of my mocks back, mainly examcraft if you're wondering.

    All higher level:

Irish 60%. Paper 1 really brought me down. Aiming for +70%

    English 72%. Happy days.
    Aiming for +80%

    Maths 33%. Oops...
Teacher said that I could probably get 50% in the lc exam if I work hard. I'm considering dropping to pass, I would rather concentrate on my other subjects, but I'm still unsure.

LCVP 56%. I'm not too concerned.

    Chemistry 86%. I'm aiming for a H1

Thats a big jump between English and Math, if you're going into anything science related you'd want to stick with higher math and work at it. Otherwise might as well drop unless you need the points badly or you feel capable of passing.

The maths paper was awful though, just bare that in mind

Could be worse, you could have 27% in maths like me...

I done a bad mock.. kinda shook by it I don't know why.. really need to up my game much more before June!

    English (HL) 60%
    Maths (OL) 41%
    Irish (OL) 53%
    Business (HL) 53%
    History (HL) 44%
    Geography (HL) 47%
    Economics (HL) 30%
    LCVP- Merit

I was so shocked about Economics cause I would have considered it to be one of my best subjects and have predicted before that I could possible get a H2, so that was quite dissapointing.

I'm usually very good at geog, but I done the wrong elective and also messed up the geoecology essay...

Business, I had no time for the last question so I was happy with 53%...

-Just wished I would have done better

There is NOTHING wrong with those results ffs. Some of us actually have to deal with genuinly bad results and that means bad across the board

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭thetalker

I would think that bad or good results all are relative to what you need. Maybe compared to you they seem decent but he could want to get 500 for all we know.

Everyone has different levels and abilities. A bad result for one person could be a brilliant result for another. Just like how anything below 400 points could be a disaster for one student and getting 400 points could be the best thing in the world for another. Both people are still valid in how they feel.

My son has received his results for the Mocks and I'm not sure how well/bad he's done?
    English 42% H6
    Maths 45% H6
    Geography 43% H6
    Biology 33% H7
    Physics 48% H6
    Art 63% H4
    Irish 31% O7 (doesn't include oral)
He's hoping for minimum of 350 points in the leaving cert so would this be considered on track? Also, we've implemented a study timetable, but after reading through some posts on boards.ie I'm wondering if it's too much?
1 hour every day of Irish, Maths & English
45 mins of electives twice a week
90 mins biology once a week
    Sundays off
Does this sound too much/average/not enough?
He seems happy enough to do it (to our faces anyway 😉ðŸ˜) but we just hope he isn't daydreaming the time away 😕

I'd say he's on track, and if he's happy to study what's above then that's perfect. I actually might adapt that study timetable myself lol. I'd say one major piece of advise is to make sure Saturday evenings and Sundays (either or) be used for socialising, I find it's crucial to kinda balance everything out if that makes sense. Best of luck!

Well he achieved 312 points in the mocks so it's reasonable that he'll get 350.

I wouldn't really say he needs to focus that much time on Irish. He's clearly not going to use it for points so all he needs it for is a pass. Definitely spend a reasonable time on the honours maths! Just because there's a good result in Art doesn't mean that he can spend less time on that than other subjects. Remember (apart from Maths) every subject is worth the same to him.

Make sure to encourage him to take walks, swims or runs etc if he isn't playing any sports.

Exercise is important for a healthy head.

So I got 44% in Irish, don't know whether to stick with honours, put in a bit more effort, and have Irish as a safety net (IF all goes well I won't be counting it for points)

Or drop to pass, I'm doing all honours at the moment and it's hard to motivate myself to stick with it "as a safety net" if I don't plan on using it for points. I feel that any time I put into Irish could be better spent elsewhere.

At any rate I don't want to fail it, I think I'd lose it if I had to repeat because I failed Irish.

So do I stay or do I go?

I dropped down and honestly the relief was worth it for me. It really freed up some time for me to improve my other subjects. I just couldn't hack learning essays because I couldn't understand course content.

Honestly if you're going to be getting around a H6 for Higher it's not much of a safety net

I'm sort of thinking along these lines. To be honest I haven't done a tap for the last year and a half in Irish, and with my Oral in 2 weeks and the exams in less than 3 months I don't see how I could bring this up to an anyways decent grade without my other subjects suffering big time.

I'm absolutely shocked and disappointed with my mocks to say the least. But the only person I can blame is myself for my laziness.
I need 375 points and Im basically sitting at around 200 after the mocks.

I got 48% in HL maths, and that's my best result.. this time last year I was basically failing every maths test and supposed to go to ordinary, basically shows I'm screwed..but I just don't know how to unscrew myself.

You're not screwed! If you manage to improve your mayhs by 12% (which is very doable I think) you'll get a H4 which is 91 points for Higher Maths.

What other subjects do you do? When it comes down to it you'll just have to study and put in the work to get your points. Definitely achievable in the next two months!

    Is the examinations.ie archive down?

Also I genuinely regret not working way harder in 5th year so I could have a chance at high points courses this year. On the other hand I can't stomach repeating. FML

Something seems to be up with the site alright. It flips back to an earlier page when you select a paper. I'm sure they'll fix it once they become aware of it.

Can't believe people still use examinations.ie.

You're better off using betterexaminations.ie ... much faster and more user friendly.

Thought it was funny when teachers still used examinations.ie when I was in school.

I did horrible in my mock chemistry, failed with 26% I made silly mistakes and just got all the information mixed up. Do you think I'd be able to get 80% in the leaving cert if so could I have some tips? I usually get 60-70% in class tests
