Doesn't it depend on the person?
Something that takes one person five minutes to revise might take another person twenty minutes to grasp.

Yeah thats true, but rather than the time taken given to cover a topic I'd like to know how much time I should put in in general. For example 4 hours could be split up into many sections depending on who's studying. Maybe what I'm trying to see is what is not enough to do for what I need to get.
If I had the certainty of knowing what I did was enough or not it would help my determination I think.

I know I can't focus on anything after roughly 3 hours study (even with plenty of breaks) , so I rarely, if ever exceed that limit.

3 hours sounds pathetic when I hear what some people are doing, but I don't see the point in just studying for the sake of it if nothing is going in.

I plan on doing nothing for this midterm

Exactly, it's the quality of your study not how many hours you do that matters.

Is anyone still unsure about their college course? I still don't know what to do, I put down Computer Science in UCC but now I'm thinking about Commerce with Chinese also in UCC and then doing the computer science conversion masters in UCD. But apparently employers don't value the conversion course as much as a BS. The BS in CS offers a 12 month work placement which is vital in today's world but on the other hand the BComm offers a 1 year study abroad in China. Or else I could do the BS in CS and then do the ''International MSc in Adv Software Dev- Ireland/China Partnership Prog in DIT'' which offers a semester of study in China.

Which one is the better option?

The second option sounds best. The work placement is vital and you'll still get to study in China. On the other hand you won't be studying any of the language by the looks of it.

There's the option of Arts International and doing Chinese and CS through that. You could use the International bit to go to China and do work placement over the summers if you feel you'll be slightly behind your CS peers.

The only disadvantage would be you'd be stuck studying two other subjects in first year

Mandarin is offered as an elective in the first year of Computer Science, not sure what happens after the first year.

Computer science is only offered as modules from second year on. So I presume that you only graduate with a major in Chinese Studies.

Could you possibly do the BS in Computer Science's work placement abroad and get the best of both worlds?

Waiting for mock results but judging there's gonna be a good bit of work to do if I want to get H1's or H2's. I dread the next 100 days till the leaving cert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭Mr Rhode Island Red

Do ye think it's feasible to bring a H5 in maths up to a H2 by the time the leaving comes around?

Yeah definitely! There's a 100 days until the Leaving cert! If you spent an hour a day studying maths between now and then that's 100 hours of study for just maths. That's way more than enough time to improve!

Yeah to be honest, it's actually been fine! Thought it was gonna be hard finding motivation but it's not been too bad! The only pain is watching my friends go out on Thursday night when I'm stuck in studying :P

Glad to hear you haven't found it too bad either!

Aw I know, looking at peoples Snapchat stories is torturous :pac: ah it gives that bit of motivation though.

Does anyone know a good way to learn the spellings for verbs and such in french. I have no problem reading the language but every time I write it down I seem to make a spelling error involving the accents or verbs. I'd rather not focus time on french so if it was some sort of trick or site that would help.

Memrise.com is good, they have Vocab lists from A Levels and GCSE's that are useful. It's quite popular

Can anyone give me time guidelines that should be followed for English Paper 2.. i.e. the comparative, poetry etc.

    Single Text: 50 minutes
    Comparative: 60/65 minutes
    Poetry: 50 minutes
    Unseen: 20 Minutes

That leaves you about 15 minutes to play with that you can add on. You can use 5 minutes to plan and 10 on your comparative or whatever. It gives you the option on the day for the unexpected and you have that bit of breathing space.

40% in maths pre.Is it possible to bring it up to H3/H4.Considering the exam was pretty tough?

We've not got any mocks back and our teachers told us not to expect them for about two weeks. :(

Depends on whether you found the exam tough but not previous exam Q's tough, maybe there's an area of math that really caused the loss in percentage.
There's no sure way to know but I think its possible if you keep doing Q's and understand how to figure out what to use and where.

They only started coming out to correctors in the last couple of weeks, so it could be a while yet.

Hows everyone keeping up in terms of study?
I'm feeling like I'm wasting time with all the free classes I've had recently, its just feeling like the calm before the storm...

+1 to this timing scheme, got me through last week's English exam with time to spare and correct a few mistakes

I haven't started studying yet :( I have no motivation. I feel like after all the mocks come back I'll know where I'm at & what I need to do which might motivate me but right now I'm at a standstill. Feels weird.
