I'll say one thing in favour of the Travelling Community. They don't block up the Health Service or hospitals or clinics, at least not in my experience. I've never seen one with a disability, or Down Syndrome (for example), or in a wheelchair, or with a walking-stick or even glasses. I've never seen one who is deformed or seemingly deranged, or blind or suffering from any such ailment.

    Why is that?

So you can verify this? I've seen travellers in hospital plenty times. Plenty people need glasses and they don't bother with them travellers included. Last year travellers were visiting a relation in the CUH and parked at the front door blocking ambulances. The van was clamped while they were inside, when they saw it clamped the rang for someone to bring an angle grinder and cut it off while security stayed well away from them.

How do you get traveler status? Like, can I be a traveller? How do they figure out who's on the list?

incorrect i'm afraid. but yeah, nothing like a bit of hysterical playing the victim because a group you dislike now have the protection they need, from people like you, all because of people like you.

why wouldn't they? even at that both of those not being on some cars isn't a traveler speciffic issue.

wrong, left do gooder pc doesn't exist, apart from in the minds of bigots and racists. actual hard working honest people (i don't mean those who call themselves as such to play the victim in a discussion on people they don't like) but actual honest hard and soft working people aren't being tossed asside.

    it doesn't.

end of the road; thank you. I have read this thread with increasing horror. People tend to react as they ar etreated so I understand more why outcasts.

Bless you! Away now here a while. Here for you.

Wait how is "anything" being highlighted, are you assuming I deem people with disability as less then human, might need binoculars from that high horse. Anything as in disabled animal etc.

You go and see none less than the Grand High Wizard Traveller, in his palace in Mullingar. Kneel before Him and he will ask you, "Are you a travelling man?" If you respond with, "Yes I am. I am traveling from the West to the East", He'll say "And what is it that you seek in the East?" You say "I am seeking the point of illumination", and that's it - you're in!

Do I get a traveller name? Can I pick it myself or is it earned through some sort of physical trial?

It's largely automated these days. There's a database of forenames and surnames, and suitable "rural" nicknames. A small Python routine will use Lib/random.py to index the three tables and throw out something like Mikey "Packing&Tripe" MacDonagh or JimJoe "Septic Tank" Sheridan.

I don't see why they can't be means tested the same as everyone else and let the ones who can afford it buy their own houses and pay for their own healthcare.

And those that do get houses if they wreck them kick them out and make sure they never get one again.

why does it make you sick, and how is it unbelieveable. if you don't pay your vat on time then you will get a letter. that's your fault. pay your taxes on time then, and you won't get a letter from revenue.
    Spare us.

Maybe if they acted like Normal Human beings instead of looking to bet innocent people, steal from the ordinary man and not look to kick people who mind their own business then you will get respect and the lack of discrimination you deserve.

Most of them would take your eyeballs out if they could.

the 12th Of July in Buttevant every year makes the orange order on same day look great.

no they will get the lack of discrimination they are entitled to under law this minute. there is no excuse for discrimination, it's only done because people can get away with it, and those who do it use any excuse to legitimize it. the same is the case for other communities who face or faced the same treatment.

I'm disgusted that not a single party in the Dail had the guts to stand up to this pointless virtue signalling, just so that politcians can feel like they have 'done something', and baldly state that travellers are the same ethnicity as the rest of us and protected by the same law, that is equality, so this bill is nothing but pointless legislation for the sake of it while a whole host of crisis in this country spiral out of control.

nope, it's far from mythical "virtue signalling," which doesn't actually exist, but is only the latest buzz term.

they are not less likely to happen. recognition of travelers means nothing in terms of the relevant authorities being able to enforce the law. they don't have the resources hence things have to be given priority. those who voted for the government voted for the authorities to have little resources. travelers are expected to live within the law and the laws are there all ready to deal with whatever.

It's not a debate/discussion if we all agree but if you have certain opinions your racist or retarded or whatever, some people can't debate anything simple's and it's the fact our opinion may not be exactly PC, but we speak from experiences and not what read or hear about.

The source of the money.............. How many times must it be said that this is the single biggest reason there is distrust of travellers by the settled community?

if that is the biggest reason then it really isn't a very good one, as rather a lot in the settled community are getting money from "sources" themselves.
I doubt their money is sourced by doing nixers. I'd be delighted if that was the case

that is what revenue is there for, to determine as such. it's revenu's concern and it's their job to deal with the issue.
I don't see why they can't be means tested the same as everyone else and let the ones who can afford it buy their own houses and pay for their own healthcare.

when travelers did pay for their houses you and others were whining on here about it. and when they can't afford to you are still complaining. it was people "paying" for their houses who actually couldn't pay for them when it came down to it that helped cause this countries issues, so the less potential for it we have the better. and why don't you pay for your own health care rather then relying on the system we subsidize if you are so concerned about paying for your own health care
And those that do get houses if they wreck them kick them out and make sure they never get one again.

those rules are all ready in place. people can be evicted from their social housing should they break the relevant rules. however, the state has a duty to provide accommodation for those who need it.

Your just looking for something to prove your superior to the rest us, get off the horse, off the Internet and do something useful, go volunteer in a traveller education centre maybe.

See your opinion is your intelligent and accepting and rest of us are knuckle draggers, you took your view because of your perception of some of us. How far we fall from that high horse.

Travelers:"We demand special status and to be treated differently to everyone else"

I have one also, with their thought on homosexual in their community I can only imagine what happens to anything with a disability. Then again they could just be offloading them onto institutions.
    anything
    ˈɛnɪθɪŋ/
    pronoun
    pronoun: anything
used to refer to a thing, no matter what.
    "nobody was saying anything"

Now it looks like you are calling travelers things or disabled people things. It's one or the other. I said originally that I'm sure you didn't mean for it to sound that way but you go straight on the attack. This now leaves me believing that you meant it the way it sounds & you are trying to weasel out of it.
If I'm wrong here please explain how Thing or anything can refer to a human or handicapped baby?

No he's not. It was a slip of the tongue, obviously you didn't mean to call anyone a thing, so just reverse over it and carry on as opposed to the usual thirty-seven pages of arguing over nonsense, for Jaysis' sake. :pac:

What on earth are you talking about?

When did they pay for their own houses?

BTW I do pay for my own healthcare because like other taxpayers I'm entitled to nothing, sure we have to fund the very group you are so concerned about.

When did they pay for their own houses?

They pay the same amount of rent as settled people in social housing. They don't get free housing. I'm not saying that they pay a lot but they don't get free housing

The trust is also gone. Even if they were to offer to repair something, can't see anyone trusting them to fix it.

The refugees would take the houses. Not sure why you left out the Northern Republicans, who I'd doubt would want to be part of Ireland.

Spend €5 million on new houses, and they're still not happy.

They like to burn the house down when a person dies in it, for some reason.

I thought this from Waterford Whispers was quite good.
AN ONLINE discussion centred around the travelling community has gone about as well as could be expected, WWN can reveal.

Feeling the need to express an opinion in a public forum, Facebook user Catríona Fitzgibbon relayed a personal experience in which she allegedly had an interaction with a member of the travelling community. What started out as an innocent 1,900 word status posting soon descended into chaos as the residents of Facebook got wind of a discussion about travellers and were drawn to the post, compelled to add their own two cents, alongside completely unrelated and highly charged invectives.

I know the actual rent isn't that high but it's debatable if many of them even pay anything, I've been told by someone that not many of them do here in Galway anyway.
