Paper Mario, Paper Mario, Paper Mario, Paper Mario and... Paper Mario.

...I honestly don't know what I want from the Switch beyond Mario Odyssey, Zelda and MarioKart. I've been so long detached from console gaming.

If anyone can do console gaming appeal, it's Nintendo...they're masters of their craft really (even if they make the odd bizarre decision). There's good things ahead for the Switch :)

So are the shops talking BS by saying you'll have to pre-order to get one?
I plan on calling into a smyths on the way home from work on Friday afternoon.
Was hoping just to pick one up there and then.

Nintendo Switch to be available for launch-day walk-ins at GameStop
Walk in and snag a Switch!

Should be the same for Europe but you can't trust Lamestop.

Those available for walk-ins will probably be snapped up in the morning though, really would not bank on being able to snag one come the evening!

Switch game downloads can’t be shared across multiple systems
Purchases can apparently only be on one system at a time.

Want to play your purchased Nintendo Switch downloads on multiple separate consoles? You'd better be prepared to buy more than one copy of each game.

We recently learned that the Nintendo Switch will finally link eShop purchases to a portable online account (unlike the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, which locked purchases to a specific piece of hardware). But we're now discovering that this feature apparently does not extend to downloading games to multiple Switch systems at the same time.

The news comes via a recent preview event for 1-2-Switch at the Nintendo World NYC store, which included a question-and-answer session captured by YouTuber CrazyDopetastic. A questioner talks about the potential for getting a second Switch for his children and asks, "if I want to take my system with me... if I were to buy a digital game, could I buy it once, or would I have to buy it multiple times so they can use those games?"

The translated answer, from Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development General Manager Shinya Takahashi: "Currently we don't have a system like that in place for Nintendo Switch, but we haven't made any final decisions about how we would approach that going forward in the future, so unfortunately I can't provide any concrete answer for you right now."

In other words, for now, it sounds like a Nintendo account (and its linked eShop purchases) can only be linked to one Nintendo Switch system at a time (that's assuming nothing was lost in the translation, of course).

As described, this would be a pretty major difference between the Switch and competing systems from Sony and Microsoft. Both the PS4 and the Xbox One allow you to play your games across multiple consoles if you confirm your identity with an online login. As long as your Xbox Live or PSN account is logged in to two systems at the same precise moment, Sony and Microsoft don't care what specific piece of hardware you're playing on.

PC-based services like Steam let you log in from up to 10 computers and even allow you to share your entire library with another account remotely via Family Sharing.

The restrictions on Switch game sharing obviously doesn't apply to physical games, which work directly in any Switch console with no need to even install the game off of the tiny cartridge. And as far as we can tell, all of the up to eight console-centric user accounts on a single Switch should be able to share any and all games downloaded to that system.

The Switch's portable form factor also makes it a little bit easier to physically share downloaded games with people in the same household—you can just hand them the system or insert it into a second dock hooked to another TV (if you have $80 to spare, that is). Of course, that arrangement won't work if one of you wants to take the Switch on a trip and someone else wants to play on another system at home.

We're currently testing out our own Switch in Ars' Orbiting HQ and will have fuller thoughts and impressions soon, but we won't be able to confirm anything about the system's online functions until they're activated around the system's March 3 launch.

Paid off the last of the Switch today and Gamestop and they were busy putting out a lot of promo material for it, display boxes, posters etc. Guy in there told me there's been big interest in the Pro Controller and the official carrying case, so much so that they've had to order a lot more of them.

I guess I can go in before work to try get one so.

So does anyone know when Argos will put theirs up for pre order like the UK site?

They have them up on the in-store computers showing as out of stock, just nothing online yet.

They don't do pre orders. Have to reserve on the morning of the 3rd.

I have mine pre-ordered through Amazon since the morning that pre-orders first went live but due to when I get paid – Thursday – and when Amazon will actually send it and charge me, might not have enough funds if they send it before that. So I could well be looking to pick one up launch day with no pre-order.

Yes, but that's a murky account sharing area that we can't really discuss on here...

You should be primary on his, he should be primary on yours, I've said too much... :P

Steam family sharing does similar, but it'll kick others out if you start to play a game.

    they have 100+ preorders seemingly

Is there a catalogue number for Argos yet? Mate of mine trying to get one.

Would have just given him my cancelled GameStop pre order if he told me earlier.

Any midnight launch for anything I've always rocked up at 11:30 and literally sat in car until 11:55, was out and all usually at 12:10PM....

Similar with PS4 launch, I remember laughing at the spas outside Tesco with their deckchairs waiting until it opened at 7am to get their PS4 as I went out with mine under my arm from GS.... :)

GTA V launch in Tesco Drogheda also actually had a huge queue outside, that one took about 20 mins so I was still finished up and all by 12:25

One I went to for Skyrim in Airside I think was about 3 people there so no idea why we or the shop bothered opening... :)

    No need for that.

Neither PS4 is mine I just like Bloodborne :pac:

Given it's murky and can't be discussed here, it's illegal? Not that I'd care, Sony can feck off if they were expecting me to traipse home to play BB every weekend.

Switch is on the same field as that without the dodgy workaround then so.

What about MS? Do they allow game sharing, or is it accessible through a loophole?

The fairest solution is probably some form of locality checking like Spotify does. For a family account you all have to live at the same address. Again, there's loopholes but if they compared IPs it could be implemented no problem for any system.

The Irish Argos website should have the same catalogue numbers as the UK. But the Irish listings don't go live until the day of release. Surprised the UK listings aren't up yet. They have the games but not the hardware.

Sooo it looks like I'm going to have an extra preorder of the switch(assuming they havent messed with the €5 online one) because my brother has had some unexpected costs come up so he doesnt think he will get it, though he still hasn't given me a solid answer yet though

Don’t Let The $300 Price Tag Fool You, The Nintendo Switch Is Actually Really Expensive

We’re just over a week away from the launch of the Nintendo Switch, which releases in the United States on March 3 for $300. Any way you slice it, that is an attractive price point for a console launch, especially given the Switch’s design as a home/portable console hybrid. Like any piece of new gaming hardware, you’re going to be paying significantly more than the asking price of the console if you actually want to have any games to play on the Switch at launch, but the recent news that the digital version of Dragon Quest Heroes will take up more storage space than the Switch includes out of the box reminded me of just how expensive this thing is going to be for anyone who wants to do some serious gaming on it.

Best case scenario, you’re out $360 (plus tax) on launch day if you’re just looking to pick up a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with the Switch, which is what I’m sure many plan to do. However, I’d wager that most people are going to want to have a bit more than that before long, especially since the Switch (and Nintendo consoles in general) is designed with multiplayer in mind. Since the Switch only comes with one pair of left and right Joy-Con controllers + dock, you’re going to have to pony up for more controllers down the road if you want to play with other people and that’s where things really start to get pricey. A single Joy-Con retails for $50 and the price climbs to $80 for a pair, which is more expensive than a standard PS4 or Xbox One controller (and that’s not even counting the additional $30 you’ll have to spend if you want another Joy-Con Grip to attach the controllers to).

There’s also the Switch Pro Controller, which I imagine will be an essential purchase for anyone who wants to play fighting games or other types of games that demand more precise (and comfortable) inputs than the Joy-Cons allow. The Pro Controller, which is pretty much the Switch equivalent of a PS4 or Xbox One controller, is $10 more expensive than either at $69. Sure, the extra cost can probably be attributed to its additional functionality like HD rumble, an NFC chip for Amiibo support, and an accelerometer and gyroscope for motion control, but that still doesn’t change the fact that Nintendo now has the most expensive traditional controller on the market.

Returning to the storage issue, unless you plan on never downloading any games for the Switch and are only using game cards, buying a microSDXC card is going to be an essential purchase. Right now, you can get 64GB cards for very reasonable prices (less than $30) but if you want a big storage boost, expect the cost to jump into the hundreds of dollars. Although Nintendo has stated that the Switch supports up to 2TB microSDXC cards, they aren’t on the market yet and the largest available card right now gives you 256GB of storage, but with a price upwards of $150.

Now, it really only makes sense to purchase a large memory card if you know you’re going to buying most of your games digitally and since the physical game cards will not require any installation (although I’ve heard that Zelda requires a 3GB install no matter which version of the game you get), I suspect that physical sales are going to be the more attractive option on the Switch. That being said, physical media sales are in decline across the board, whether we’re talking movies, music, or video games, so it feels more than a bit odd to see Nintendo privileging them over digital. There’s nothing wrong with buying Switch game cards, but I know I for one hate the idea of having to bring all of these things with me on a trip rather than just having them all installed on my system, accessible at any time. Plus, buying digital means you’ll always have access to your game, whereas you’re out of luck if you end of up losing one of those tiny game cards.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying that the Nintendo Switch is in no way a “budget” alternative to the PS4 or Xbox One, even if its underpowered hardware suggests otherwise. Yes, the Switch is selling for less at launch than what those consoles sold for back when they were released in 2013, but in 2017, neither console costs much more than the Switch and by the holiday season, they’ll probably be less. Even though Nintendo likes to think that they’re not competing with Microsoft and Sony, the truth is that the Switch most definitely is competing with the PS4 and Xbox One and once the honeymoon period is over and the novelty of the hardware wears off, I just don’t see the Switch being able to compete with either console, let alone PCs.

Not only is Nintendo going to (again) have the most underpowered hardware on the market, but they’re still not going to have access to most of the biggest AAA games of this year, unless they’re hiding the fact that the next Call of Duty is coming to Switch this November. Nintendo’s first party offerings, such as Zelda and Mario, will no doubt be as strong as ever and perhaps the Switch will become a legitimate second system option for those who already do most of their gaming on one of the three aforementioned platforms, but what worked in 2006 with the Wii may not necessarily fly in 2017. People have more options for entertainment than ever now and even with the strength of Nintendo’s first-party and the console’s selling features, it remains unclear if the average consumer is going to give up gaming on their iPad, which can also do a variety of other tasks that the Switch simply can’t (such as a Netflix app, which the Switch will inexplicably lack at launch).

I really do hope I’m wrong and that the Switch can maintain momentum throughout the year and not just at launch, which is no doubt going to be huge. My point is that it’s naive to point to the Switch’s $300 price point and label it as an inexpensive machine, as the truth is that it’s just as expensive as the competition when you start factoring in the various games, accessories, and storage that will become necessary to get the most out of the system. Nintendo already has its die hard fans on board, but time will tell whether the Switch’s hidden costs end up being a barrier to entry for the mass gaming public, who may end up deciding that they don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars just so their kids can play Mario Kart in the van on the way to soccer practice.

I know we're not exactly spoilt with options for a Dublin launch but what do we think is the best place to hang out and meet fellow gaming/Nintendo enthusiasts for the launch?
My local Gamestop store aren't doing a midnight launch so I'm going to make my way to town. My pre-order is locked to Gamestop Newbridge so I'll just try to be early in the queue and get one of the ones put away for people who show up .. well that's the plan.

Honestly Sligeach, if you set out to find articles on how expensive the Switch is you'll find it, and vice versa.
Truth is, as an initial outlay, all you need is a Switch starter set for €330 and a copy of Zelda BotW.
Nothing else is required, as an initial outlay.
A pro controller might seem "essential" but without trying the standard pad it's impossible to say, so it's not necessary.
If you want to spend your time and money downloading then your games then you'll need an expansion via SD but you don't have to jump for the priciest biggest card.
Heck, you can just pick up a cheap 64 GB to start with and expand later to a bigger one.

I will agree that the Pro Controller has no business being as expensive as it is and I'm hoping the 3rd party manufacturers will bring alternatives to market that will be a lot cheaper.

I think it was just one derogatory term in there, I'm sure "eejits" would work just as well.
But I think we got the point of what you were saying and that you weren't deliberately trying to insult a certain group and their families.
