They'd use any reason to refuse indemnity if there was the slightest opportunity is all I'd be worried about..

Of course. You'd need to notify them of any changes made to the geometry of things and/or performance.

It will also technically potentially invalidate your warranty with respect to suspension/hubs/bearings etc... so worth keeping in mind.

Yep, possibly. But if you ring the likes of Chill, the drone on the the other end of the line will just come back with "computer says no".

Slight side whinge here but lately, as a motorist, I'm feeling a little under siege!

The hoops you have to jump through to get insurance, the immense increase in premiums, the NCT process for relatively new cars, the restrictions on modifications on the car, the high levels of tax for certain cars, the refusal to cover older cars at all, the penalty points for every little thing, checkpoints insisting on you carrying your insurance certificate(!), not to mention the ridiculous double taxing on the car purchase in the first instance, the tax levels on fuel, the fact that the road tax does not all go to repair/upkeep of roads etc etc etc.

    It's f**king exhausting at times...

    Phew.. that feels better

It is quite, but that's the pain we decide to put ourselves through! In fairness if it came down to a choice between some of those things (can't say all as some are relevant to all cars) and the alternative of driving a brand new Duster/Yaris/normal Fiesta etc... every 4 years, just to get around some of them, I'd choose the nicer car and some hassle every time!

I do hear you though, it is getting tiring. I have felt that a bit myself over the last while. Maybe I'm just getting older and my patience/priorities are shifting as I do, but the enthusiasm I had for tackling all those hurdles 5 years has definitely diminished!

Apologies if this isn't the right place but seen as it's a thread for Golfs this might be the best place to ask.

My mam is looking at at 2014 1.2TSI Golf. What's the engine like does anyone know? Is it reliable? She much prefers the interior of this model than the previous one.

She only drives little short stop start journeys 90% of the time so no need for a diesel.

Probably better of starting a new thread. This is for higher powered golf's

Have the engine in my car (Skoda). No issues so far in a year and a half though i've only done 25k from new. Know a few others with the engine and not heard of any issues from them either.

Thank you. She'll only be doing around 7-10k km a year and she'll have this for the next 10-15 years. She just wants something that will last that's a little bigger than her current 02 Colt.

Some of those 1.2 TSi engines suffered from timing chain stretching. They reverted back to a timing belt design later on but not sure what year.

They've got rid of the tartan/alcantara option. That is a showstopper for me, It gave you leather in lots of places, quality alcantara whilst still having the golf look. The plain cloth is too cheap feeling for a premium car. What a shame.

I'm the opposite view. The tartan cloth just IS Gti. Leather or alcantara just makes it look like any old highline.
But then I'm funny like that!

Agreed. I had the tartan/alacantara/leather option in mine and it was very nice. Don't believe for a second that it was "leather" though - not too many cattle died in its making I reckon ;) It was very nice though regardless.

I agree... the standard cloth, particularly the non tartan bits - the bolsters, armrests, doorcards... are nasty.

I saw pics in some of the YouTube vids for the facelift of a different alcantara/leather option. Not tartan but some other pattern. I assumed VW Ireland would offer that option. Maybe if you dig out the option code for it, they'd spec it.

Full leather is bloody expensive... €2k. I have it in the R, It does look great but it makes the cabin fairly dark. Don't think the quality is brilliant either for the cost of it.

This was how it looked in my GTI:

Yeah its leatherette which I don't mind once its not under my arse. The euro option of mine had it on the doors as well which definitely gave it a nice feel.

It was on my door cards too. And armrests.

The replacement for the Alcantara/Cloth mix is called Art Velours and has a honeycomb pattern in it. I liked the previous offering and I'd have spec'd it as it offered the best of both worlds

Unfortunately, the new pattern doesn't look like an option for the facelift GTi here in Ireland. No idea what the PR-number is for it as not a lot of VW websites give out the info.

Funny, as the old alcantara/tartan option was never offered in the uk.
I'd say VW Ireland will do it if asked... and may yet even add it as an official option.

That colour scheme was a pretty short lived option.
What I didn't like about it was it just wasn't "sporty" for want of a better word. you lost the black headliner... which is a pretty standard expectation in a sporty cabin.

Fully agree, I'm not a big fan of leather seats in general in most cars (they aren't as comfortable as cloth to start with) but cloth tartan seats are all that belong in a GTI imo.

One thing that is a disappointment in the golf R are the seats, VW really should have offered a recaro bucket like the clubsport.
As Joe mentioned the standard leather is expensive for not great quality and the carbon leather while nice is mad money at over €3k.

In the end I just went for standard interior but I added the winter pack for heated seats.

The mk7 gti leather/alcantara is one of the nicest and wasn't too expensive as an option.

Spent a few days in Berlin recently. Visited the Drive forum which Volkswagen displayed some concept electric and hybrid cars. Will post pictures when back at my computer.

Coming to the end of the walk around I was offered to drive either the GTE Passat or an electric Up! . I was lucky I took my drivers license with me as I was heading to Autostadt the following day.

Took out the GTE for a 45min drive around Berlin. You have three drive modes, fully electric, petrol only or combine both engines for GTE mode.

Unsurprisingly the car is unbelievable quite in full electric and very responsive to the throttle input. It's a heavy car for a 1.4 petrol but it didn't feel under powered at all when in petrol mode. Press the GTE button and the combination of electric and petrol is very impressive. Car feels very composed not at all like a large heavy saloon. Dynaudio kicks in when in GTE to pipe in fake engine sounds.

The Passat was loaded with every extra possible. Digital dash is impressive but felt it had too much information on display, the electric engine info adds to increased information.

Sat Nav had a bit of 3D imhagery in and around big buildings such as the Sony Centre but with the same look and feel as the Nav in my own car (mk 7) when only 2D was available.

I have the 'Discover Pro' on my Golf from July 2013, and it shows all the buildings in 3D in Cork City centre as you drive along.

There was an update to the nav package last November, so I'm curious to see if it has more details.
