    *update on Insurance FYI

Rang insurance company (chill) as they didn't ring me back, as promised.

They checked with the underwriters and they won't cover me on that vehicle!

I told them to escalate this up to whoever needs to deal with it, but I want it sorted within the next 3 hours as I have to go collect my son in the car. They said they could get me a quote but I told them I wasn't letting this go. I told them I was completely honest with them and its not my fault their information was wrong. I said I've gone up 46 hp, same make, model, year, and mileage and it is a ridiculous situation that they have put me in.

I'm on hold - currently this call has taken 25 mins and counting.

That's a crazy situation they have put you in.

Is there anyway you can cancel (get them to refund you for any future cover) and set up a new policy?

I'm with 123.ie and have had no issues with them.

Currently paying approx €500 fully comp, NCB, protected etc. on a MK7 GTI (non PP although covered as a PP as there was no non PP on the system at the time!).

    That's nuts.
I had similar issues with Chill the morning I was due to pick up the R.
To cut a long story short, I cancelled the policy I had and they created a new policy for me with a different insurer. I was well over an hour on the phone with them getting passed from one idiot to the next but eventually I got there and the new policy worked out cheaper.

They quoted me Allianz - 953e

    Went to 123 - 800e.

Quick question lads - does the keyless entry have and alarm and immobilizer?

    immobilizer is standard

but if you want the alarm you had to take keyless

if you just had keyless you needn't have the alarm

    They all have immobilisers.

Alarm - not necessarily. Easiest way to tell is, open your drivers door, look down the B-pillar trim and if you see a button there behind the seatbelt, that button is for turning off the interior sensors. If its not there you've no alarm.

Not necessarily. It did become possible to spec keyless without alarm.

You couldn't get keyless without the alarm. In fact it's the only way I could get an alarm when I spec'd my car in October 2014.

Edit: only in cars up to a certain build date in 2015

€800! Guess I'm in for a 'shock' when I renew in June

In 2015 on the gti if you have keyless then you have the alarm too.
Look for button on the b pillar for motion sensor.

    Well wear with it.
Due you trade the gtd in the end?

Not the case. Especially when keyless became bundled with the tech pack - it didn't include an alarm.
As said, easiest way to know for sure is if that button is on the b pillar.

    I have an alarm. That's grand - I thought I had one.

Insurance up and running. F**king insurance companies - the bane of our lives!

800e was close to what I paid last time I renewed, so "happy" with that.

    Thanks for your assistance lads/ladies.

Yeah depends when in 2015 car came in .
When I got mine early 2015 it was separate from tech pack but later in the year it was added to tech pack and no alarm.would have thought this would be mainly on 2016 cars however as the pack changed late on the year.
To be honest they have changed the specs here so often it's very hard to keep up.

Very nice, that's one of the best colours for the MK7 imo.

How do they compare now that you've had both GTi & GTD?

Sorry posters - got a little distracted there.

Yep - traded in the GTD. Had to pay 2k to change. Mine had more spec and bigger alloys but I wanted the GTi and so was prepared to take that on the chin.

Performance wise, I find the GTi nippier for sure. The steering and suspension seem softer. I did have the Adaptive Chassis Control on the Diesel and so could change the suspension and steering.

Happier with the GTi. The pedigree is a big thing for me. Plus I had a 2008 Type R and the GTi reminds me of that (red trim on black, 200 plus hp)

How does it compare to the Seat you were thinking of?
    Is it manual or dsg?
Am surprised you say it feels softer than the gtd.
Maybe the smaller alloys on the gti make a difference.

the interior of the SEAT would have put me off. The VW is far more expensive looking.

    I bought the manual GTi.

Maybe the wheels, or it maybe the settings I had on the GTD..

I only got one key with the GTi. 300e for a replacement to incl programming. I've sent an email to the garage asking them to follow up on the 2nd key from the previous owner

I'm surprised the dealer didn't account for the second key. I certainly wouldn't entertain any request for money towards a new key!

Me neither. He either finds it for you or pays towards its replacement...

they said they had asked for it from the guy who traded in the Gti and that they would follow it up with him. It was only said to me when I picked it up and I wasn't quick enough to make a fuss over it :(

Sorry - I should have said the garage I bought it from was not a VW garage. They haven't come back to me on it yet.

Mind you - they have my car up on Carzone already and haven't put the right spec up. They won't sell it as a 150 bhp so I won't be rushing to correct them on that until they come back to me on the key!

Failing getting the 2nd key back, I'd personally be asking the garage to cough up for new locks and keys. I'd be very annoyed from a security point of view.
I'm sure an insurance company wouldn't be too happy that the 2nd key is missing either.

You sure it's not a special order 'detuned' GTD?!?:D

How they can sell cars when they haven't a clue what the car is is beyond me!

Amazing how many car salespeople have no interest in cars at all.

Some gentle spacers make a huge difference to the look of the car, should have come looking like this from the factory!

And yes, yes the parking (it was empty at 7pm on a Tuesday! :P ).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,554 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Looks good. A little lowering now and it'll look spot on. What size are the spacers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

11's up front and 16's on the rear. I'd say if you went 20's on the rear you'd get that full fat look, but it would need to be lowered for that to look as well as it should.

A friend of mine put 12's on the front and 20's (!!) on the rear. The fronts looked perfect, especially with the VWR lowering springs. But the rears definitely came out a little bit too much for my liking. I'd say your 16's are closer to the mark.

Always good to ensure that is a bit of space around the baby :D

Also carefully on the down ramps in that car park, I tend to have a bit of fun driving down from the roof there...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

The very last ramp before exiting seems to be the only one I've ever had previous issue with. My ST (that was lowered) used to graze the undertray coming off that one if I was going at more than a crawl. No issues so far with the GTI, but then again it's not yet lowered.

Does the putting of spacers and/or lowering springs qualify as "modifications" in the eyes of insurance companies?
