Rte is taking a bit of flack for inviting John Gilligan on as a guest. Understandable as the fella is an out and out murdering prick. Not a bad way to spice up the show though. Can a show that has become dull and sterile be blamed for trying to get a bit of it's edge back and for once not rely on the Rte canteen to fill it's guest slots?

Even if they did invite him on , Tubridy would inevitably fcuk up the interview .

It glorifies criminals by giving them airtime and is disrespectful to victims.

Not really - the indo has become indignant and is creating total hysteria over what seems to have been just an idea by one researcher.

Beware of believing the utter sh1te that the indo spouts.

Making a celebrity out of a scumbag who should not get that platform. Tubridy wouldn't even be able to ask him hard questions that need to be asked for fear of repercussions.

How anyone thinks this is a good idea is beyond me. F**k the ratings, it wouldn't be worth it.

Its the sensationalist indo creating a story out of nothing.
The sensationalist indo and sister rags herald and world that give "celebrity" status to the scum.

Sad that so many people don't see the indo for what it is - a sensationalist, hysterical, rag.

Didn't even know he was out. When did that happen?

Couple of years ago now....think he got shot through a toilet door aswell!

I don't really see what he has to offer in an interview situation,as he's hardly going to incriminate himself over his role in killing that journalist??

But that being said...curiousity alone...would lead me to watch it

You think with the attention he received for the Killing of Veronica Guerin , the two assassination attempts on his life, with his minder being killed. his exile to England & then meekly being let back in, he would want to keep his head down, No not Johhnyboy , He thrives publicity & attention, he has a facebook now with all sorts of ramplings on it.

And while I do think him getting 25 years, reduced on appeal for cannabiz smuggling was a bit harsh, Reality of it was that he went down for organising the murder of Veronica Guerin.

A good interviewer would tear him to shreds, have we got one ?

I wish he did go on the show and I think the late late were spot on asking him.

The late late was always better when they tackled hard issues instead of the continual fluff or Z list social campaigns they trawl out.

It would be interesting to hear his side - he was brought down by rats who were offered an inducement to betray him and others.
Lets not forget the judges in the court didn't believe a lot of the evidence by those in witness protection. So no doubt Gilligan isn't a nice character but the state played dirty also so I'd like to hear the other side of it.

Plus it would make an interesting change to what is in essence a sh1te show.

I don't see the issue. An interview with a very high profile figure like Gilligan would be of huge interest to a lot of people.

There's inevitably going to be those who disagree with him being on TV (vocal minority and all that) but we all know the population would tune in en masse to watch the interview.

So you can't really say it's not something a public broadcaster should be doing when it's clearly something the general population have so much interest in seeing.

"So John, you are a real family man - tell us about that".

Nah, Turbidy would mess it up and I would not feed Gilligan's hunger for publicity.

He'll be writing books next. I'd say the Garda haves headache looking after him at this stage.

Turbid would ask him about his equestrian centre and interest in horses and finish with fake interest in 'The DUBS ' football team and forget the elephant in the room , in between a load of toothy guffaws and giggles , he's such an amateur.

This doesn't glorify criminals.Everyone knows he's a scumbag, if anything it might let people see him for the little creep he is.

How is him appearing on the Late Late Show any worse than the continuous article about him and other similar scumbags in the newspapers.Do they not glorify criminals as well are they not disrespectful to the victims.

Newspapers mostly report on criminal activity. Interviewing someone like Gilligan on a mainstream tv programme allows him the opportunity to have a voice. A lot of victims of crime never get that opportunity.

Give them a real close up look at him though.

    Giving him a platform is a lose-lose.

If Tubridy lays into him, he can claim it was a one sided hatchet job.
If Tubridy gives him space, we all know how that'll go - minimise his crimes, blame his 'deprived' upbringing.

But nobody is going to feel any sympathy for him.So it will make no difference.

It glorifies criminals by giving them airtime and is disrespectful to victims.

This a thousand times over, on a time when we should be turning our backs on these scumbags there's our public money going to glorify his like, and I bet he's getting an appearance fee too.

They should have family members of everyone he was involved in killing and injuring on the panel with him - and give them sticks !

In fairness reading his Facebook page he is not going on about his upbringing, he does state that he worked and payed taxs for a lot of his life as he worked on B&I shipping ?? He is rambling on about how is conviction & sentence was wrong and that the state stitched him up.

In fairness I don't think they are planning to have a tribute show for him.

But where is the entertainment value in presenting us with this kind of pond-life as a guest?

The only person I know & heard of that he was involved in killing was VG , and he was cleared of that by our courts.

Because it will almost certainly get massive viewership. That's all TV shows care about.
