Vet is late for the herd test, it's a pain in the hole when you rush all morning to be ready!

Sorry to hear that. What happened him?

He was born about 6 weeks early, went from syringe to dosing gun to lamb tit to cow, at first I fed him every 3 hours or so. Vet only diagnosed him with a heart murmur there on Thursday so I'm guessing that's what did it. He was sucking away and let out a baa and lay down. I placed him in the proper position to breathe and all but he died in front of me.

Savage effort there haywire and then you have to look at all the vegan posters that we are the "enemy" of animals. A little education would go a long way with that lot.

Two weeks bar the odd night, was after 3am when I got to sleep and alarm was off before seven. I find it usually lasts a few weeks and then goes away for a while.

I know before i finished niggtns I did loose the run of things, I was taking Anything drowsy to get me three hours sleep during the day and then overnight drinking a lot of coffee, maybe 10-12 mugs. I thought things would settle but still get bouts of insomnia, doc said it may never pass.

It's a bollix. Just back from the army physio and news not good

Had test here last week.Vet rang about 20 mins before appointed time to see how I was fixed. He was after getting a call for a calving but said he would sort me first. Only had a dozen animals to test so he knew he wouldn't be that long but I was very surprised that he came to me first.

Seems factually correct, for snatch calving, once you strip away the sentimentality and anthropomorphism.

'I could no longer participate in that. Can you?'

Yes, is my answer. I've squared away the ethics of it years ago. Some people obviously haven't. It just goes to show the disconnect that exists, which started with the industrial revolution.

As far as taking calves from their mothers are concerned, I've seen my lot "mothering", and I don't think handing them over to me can be any worse than the half-brained 2nd calf heifer they use as a nanny once they get bored of them. So I have a clear conscience on that score.

Besides that, we let cows back in to feed calves, and some calves into the collecting yard where they feed as the cows come in to the parlour, and nobody seems any the worse for it. They certainly don't have to be dragged away from each other.

Maybe we have particularly laid back cows? Or much more likely it is the overall atmosphere in a herd that is important.

The subtle point that both sides miss in the contrived "vegan vs dairy" debate is that, on family farms, the farmer and his family are an inherent part of the herd. In Ireland, if we would only make use of it, that's a point which is very much in our favour.

I doubt it, Reggie, they already know everything about farming after watching a 10 second American clip on Youtube.

I just feel sorry for poor Dawn, she's the quietest animal we have and through no fault of her own she has to go. I heard her roaring like mad in the shed before 9am this morning, I reckon she knew :(

In fairness to George he did try and pin that woman down but she never answered a single question he asked her only spoke about her agenda. At least George tried to fight the Farmers cause he pulled her up when searching said everybody a few times pointing out that were humans and cows are animals. She didn't like it.

Well fcuk him anyway, it happens to all us I'm afraid. We you think of all the work time money and effort that goes into nursing a sick calf and when you think your right they turn around and die on you. Wouldn't it have been a fine thing if he had kicked the bucket after calving.
You probably got kinda attached to the calf yourself after all the time you spent looking after him.get him out of the yard as quick as you can and forget about him. Will poor auld Dawn be going to Dawn?

Had a very satisfying few hours this afternoon - got rushes topped that I failed to get done last year due to damaging the topper. Now all I need are few more dry days to finish. Want to get LIPP done in good time this year.

Stil waiting on money from The beef genomics scheme. Not one penny received yet.

Getting sick of calling them and they saying payment in the near future.

Aye if he'd dropped dread the first day I wouldn't have allowed myself to get so attached to the bugger. That's why he only got a name last week, didn't want to jinx him but sure it happened anyway :(

I don't know she's been gone from here over a year now. The last I heard the white head was in calf

I would not be entirely honest if I pretended that the photo caption "Dawn Meets Dawn Meats" had not briefly crossed my twisted mind.
