Just had the team sent to me aswell. Good to see that the ballyea lads are available. Surprised Gudgy istnt starting though. Really not a fan of Malone. Don't rate him as an inter county player. Hopefully Shanahan can get back to his best form and stay fit.
Am very interested to see how the management use reidy and SOD this year. Think Reidy will be a huge player for us this year.

Edit: Pat o Connor named captain for the year with TK as vice captain

I was thinking about Reidy in the full forward line, if he starts because he is the freetaker, that only leaves two other positions for Conor McGrath, Shane O'Donnell, Aaron Cunningham and Aron Shanagher, plus a few others.

I'm not mad about the team, I think it will do well to win. I agree with you on Malone, he doesn't have enough hurling for what I have seen but I guess we will see how he takes his chance. First chance too for Jamie Shanahan, I didn't think it would take him this long for his first senior start. I think if were struggling with our play, Conlon will just go in beside Aron Shanagher and we hit it in direct.

Very disappointing about the two Clonlara lads but you would have to imagine the management will have a return date planned ahead for them before the championship after they learned their lesson. I mean f#ck it, its still pre-season, there hasn't been a competitive ball thrown in yet.

Shanahan has basically been injured for last 2 years. Had a bad back injury anyway.
While I would like a more physical presence in midfield, I think reidy and TK could cause havoc with their speed, skill and shooting ability.
Didn't think the ballyea lads would be involved so would have been very happy to avoid relegation and I still think we will do well to get more than 2 wins.
Still a lot of lads to come back into the team with pat o Connor, David Mac and McGrath.

Edit: now I know the game is supposed to be on eir sport but it's not in my channels guide anyway on sky. Have Dublin tipp at 5 then Dublin Tyrone at 7 on eir sport 1 and Mayo Kerry at 7 on eir sport 2. Any ideas on where I'd find it??

Rumour isn't he's injured. Rumour is something else entirely.
Probably no surprise he has been noted for it in the past . Heard he was injured earlier in the week . Given some of the over the top rumours in the past I was pouring cold water on things

He is a huge loss but again probably not a surprise

Think Pat o'Connor is an excellent choice as captain also . One of our more consistent defenders over the last few years

Can i just say what a legend Gary Brennan is to play two games in the same weekend, two different codes, over 200m apart. No one would have thought less of him to sit out Sundays game.

Brolly can talk about modern day robots all he likes but look at the positives and the dedication some of these men give. Incredible stuff

start as you mean to go on, take out a few older heads from this side and you could be forgiven for not thinking its 2014 again

gerry and donal have stayed loyal to a few of the class's of 12/13/14 and rightly so , they have also brought in a more physical element , podge , and reidy probably the only light men on the side , big night for the 3 sixmilebridge men to stake a place in the team , although shannahan aside the half back line looks to lack pace wouldnt be surprised to see an interchange at times between corners and wings ,

up front will probably consist of a 2 man full forward line with reidy dropping back to the middle with podge on the free roll behind the front two , malone golden and conlon to be the main target men for the puck outs

a win is almost vital to get off to a good start , with kilkenny game coming a week later wee will need points on the board early to claim a top 4 place for the play/offs

Well that was horrific stuff. Just not at the races at all. No intensity, touch is awful and awful decision making.

Fair duece to cork though. Solid performance from them. Much better work rate and skill levels

Goal saves our 1st have blushes.

Yep, the goal makes it look better but by God Clare are very poor, maybe the wind is playing a big part..Kingston looks dangerous every time he gets the ball..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,371 ✭✭✭letowski

Jack Browne is never and will never be a intercounty cornerback. We need to be bringing on O'Brien there.

Our hurling and decision making around the midfield is poor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,371 ✭✭✭letowski

Ugh, why do we still have Kelly on penalties.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭4Ad

A better 2nd half but Cork full back line doing a good job..unfortunately....

An absolute shambles. Just not up to the pace of the game at all. Touch was absolutely horrific. No match sharpness at all.

I think himself and Kelly will be back with them after this til Paddy's day, though I don't think they should have played tonight..

.. acutally looking there, if Kelly had not played tonight, it would have been really, really embarrassing.

We look seriously behind schedule, like right across the team. Has there been any ball work done, players like Podge and O'Donnell would never be seen dropping 10 yard stick passes? I'm massively worried about our backs this year too, we not only don't know how to tackle properly, we have no idea how to hold our shape and defend as a unit. Our half backline was out pass midfield for a lot of that game.

The management look like they have a mountain of work over the next four months.

Podge did score 1-1 so he's probably not to blame on the night... I agree on the shape of the team comments though

Yeah I wouldnt worry about Podge in the long run, he was very busy as usual, his touch and striking will improve.

One selection I dont agree with is Cleary at centre back. I think he will make a cracking wing back, but his style is not suited to the 6 position. He attacks everything around the field, but its just as important to hold the centre and shape too. All the teams that have won stuff in the last 10 years play a deep holding centre back, Ronan Maher, Kieran Joyce, Conor O'Mahoney, Brian Hogan, etc.

management have a number of things to look at yes , but on the basis of tonight i wouldnt worry as much as others

first up we need to start chipping away at the score board rather then constantly looking for goals when we go behind , the amount of squandered chances especially in the middle of the second half was ridicules

we need a spread of scores from accross the forward line , and while its not popular with some people i think shane o'donnell needs to be rotated from the bench and be introduced in the second half of games

in the middle , we are still too over relent on conlon and kelly for both grafting and ball winning ,

at the back while cleary didnt have a bad game the 3 that lined out at half back dont have enough pace , the least that could have been done would have moved jack browne into a wing back position when caodigan was getting the better of him

cork are miles further down the road then us at the moment , while they do have some good young lads coming through , tonight has probably only crossed out a few names on a list for later in the year then anything else , lets hope next week we can come up with a better attacking plan against the cats at the very least

dont know if the camera picked it up ,but conlon did have a few words with him before he took it in which a frustrated kelly pointed to the sideline as if to say he was given permission to take it , either conlon was suggesting he took it or someone else or even suggested that he tap it over i dont know , there was a discussion between the two , he has a terrible record for such a good player with them

    Clare 2-11 - 0-11 Down

15 minutes either side of half time killed the game off in which saw clare score 1-3 in the last 7 minutes of the first half 0-4 points in the start of the second to leave themselves 13 points to the good , with the game practically over colm collins emptied the bench taking off the likes of brennan , jamie malone and tubridy , while we lost our shape a bit the result was never in much doubt ,

handling errors and not taking enough scoring chances will be the main talking points in training next week , clare could have doubled there tally given the amount of missed chances again today

galway in two weeks time in salthill will be an interesting test and will shape the rest of the league as to which side of the table we will be concentrating on , none of the remaining teams would be that far ahead of us but in the case of avoiding relegation we would need to pick up one win away from home ,

    scorers
    david tubridy 1-3
    eoin cleary 0-3
    jamie malone 0-3
    kealan sexton 1-1
    sean collins 0-1

after round 1 of the hurling , a much sharper performance is needed against kilkenny next week to have any chance of making the top 4 and avoiding the relegation playoff , kilkenny were also that bit off the pace today so maybe with a big crowd in the park next week we can mount a backlash

    Hoganstand.com_Profile.jpg
footballers unbeaten after round two and sit in 2nd in the league , in reacent years the progressive teams are often more suited to this division , olast years two promoted teams setting the pace agin , the galway game will tell us more about ourselves in two weeks time

hot and cold hurler , has been descent in the past for us but cadogan has his number with years , a change should have been made earlier last night on him, on his ballyea form he still deserves his place in the panel for the moment

Tony Kelly playing 3 games in a week is a bit much, considering he's on a scholarship to UL I don't think it was too much to ask for him to have the weekend off and it would have been a good opportunity for someone else, then again the g0bsh1te of a fellow midfielder and UL hurler more than likely meant Kelly had to play. Had Kelly ever scored a goal from a free direct? He scored against Dublin in the Park but I don't know if that was direct, I always question a player who isn't their club free taker taking inter-county frees, I'd say Colin Ryan is thinking he'll be welcomed back after his soccer break.

What was with Donal Tuohy leaving his brother's wedding (where he was bestman)??? FFS, it was the first round of the league and players are being given time off the whole time surely they could have allowed him the weekend off.

I was talking to someone at the football today and they were sweating over the All Ireland Club final, he has a hotel for him and the 2 kids booked for 2 nights but it Ballyea mightn't be playing till the Monday.
