So what? Thats the most riddiculous thing I read. You could have the biggest launch line up in history and have every single game be crap. 'Smallest in history' literally means nothing, now thats a clickbait article. PS4/XB1/360/PS3/DS/PS2 all had much larger launch line ups, yet somehow had maybe 2 games worth playing between them.

Smallest console since the N64 launch.
Which launched with 2 games, one of which was Mario 64, which went on to be one of the (if not outright THE) most influential 3D platformers of all time.

Smallest handheld launch since the DS. OK, not so many all time classics in there, but Project Rub is definitely better than the cover or name would make you think :D And the console itself was the best selling handheld of all time.

And the largest launch was the Wii U which was a commercial flop and filled out with lacklustre aging 3rd party titles.

So this is a good news story?

Yes. I would rather have, genuinely. A launch line up of 5 retail games, 5 indie stuff, plus hopefully virtual console, of which 3 of them are good. Then 25 mediocre Wii U games, or 15 crap PS4/XB1 games.

In fairness to the article, Nintendo are not feeding the hype fire, so journo's have to scramble up whatever information we all ready have and look for new ways to serve it. For every parmentier potatoes there have to be increasing numbers of "mashed potato shaped like a fish" as desperation sets in. (ironically it's the latter rather than the former that Parmentier himself came up with).

Don't hate the playa's! Hate the manufacturers of the platform on which the game is played!

well since there are indie games due out on the 3rd which are digital only i'd say its a guarantee that the eshop with or without VC games will be up at launch

    That's an excellent point.
The forecast of digital only titles on launch means they have to have the online infrastructure in place.
VC content, I'd say they'll have some high profile titles available on the day tbh.

 It's not a clickbait article. Its purpose was to deal with the quantity of games at launch, not their quality. I think it did an excellent job at that. I don't think you even read it properly. It did say that "In the Switch’s favour, the DS only launched with six games, two of which were exclusive, and it sold 154 million units."

The DS actually seems like a good argument for the idea that a console's launch is not really a make-or-break event too. I don't remember the DS really picking up steam until nearly 2 years into its cycle, around the time the DS Lite came out. Same goes for the PS3, which very few people bought at 600 compared to its overall sales.

Nintendo really should have the entire Wii U/3DS VC catalogues available day one. Even if it took a bit longer to sort out transfers from Wii U/3DS, you'd have so much amazing stuff available day one.

I agree. Way too much being made out of the launch titles. I'd rather they pace out delivery of quality titles so there's always something in the pipeline and they appear to being attempting that this time around. Not bothered about the VC at launch but do hope they implement it properly at some stage this year.

Poor games hurt a console, look at Lococycle on the XB1, a launch game and utter sh1te.
The system would have been better without instead of it being there to bulk out the poor launch line up.

    Clickbait.
They take a look at the statistics of what's being searched for the most.
They generate articles to attract the searching punter.
They attach revenue generating add on the end of the headline links.
    Visitors visit and make revenue
They post links and more people visit and more revenue is made.

Those who have pre-ordered will always defend their purchase.

Those who don't pre-order will always find articles/reasons to justify their reason for not pre-ordering.

It's a boring back and forth at this stage.

    ---

I've pre-ordered because I want this console to do well, I'm on the go a lot which helps increase my gaming time, new Zelda (short sighted reason perhaps but still... It's Zelda), it genuinely looks like a solid piece of kit and because I am excited about this console.

I've got my concerns like most and the questions I have are not as yet answered but my excitement is over ruling my concerns right now. Could be blind optimism on my part but I want to believe that this console can truly succeed and be great.

The internet is a funny place at times. You can always find a post/article that backs up your opinion on nearly every topic.

There's probably a hundred reasons why I shouldn't have pre-ordered and paid off my Switch but there's equally 100 reasons why I'm probably justified in doing so.

To quote the article you linked to
Nintendo is amping up the hype for the Switch, but historically it has the weakest lineup seen in decades.

    And that is an opinion.
    Not a fact.
The article is even referred to as "analysis" which is simply the authors opinion.
He or she is basing the article on their own subjective analysis of the facts as they see them.

The author almost immediately equates the quantity of games being released for the Switch on launch with the quality of the games.
And that's the fallacy the article is built upon, which means the rest of it's conclusions are also false, or only correct accidentally.

A better piece would have been to look at the review scores for the various launch games and derive an average from there, but that would have required a little work so hardly surprising this lazy journo didn't bother.

And, just to be contrary, the DS had nothing to compete against save the PSP and it's own predecessor, it was almost inevitable it was going to own the handheld market.
The Switch is entering a market with three competing systems, XB1, PS4 and PC, not to mention it's competing with it's own predecessor, the 3DS.

Just to give an example of my point
    PS3 launch games
    Blazing Angels: 66/100
    CoD3: 80/100
Genji days of the blade: 55/100
    Madden NFL 07: 76/100
    Marvel: Ultimate Alliance: 73/100
    Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire: 33/100
    NBA 2K7: 80/100
    NHL 2K7: 73/100
Resistance: Fall of Man: 86/100 (a legacy score surely, this brown pile of sh1te is a terrible game)
    Ridge Racer 7: 78/100
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07: 81/100
    Tony Hawk's Project 8: 76/100

So, on average, a PS3 launch game was likely to be a 71% game.
    Woohoo....
Break out the red lemonade and buns!

Rather than that big pile of m'eh on a hideously expensive console, €499 or €599, depending on getting the 20GB or 60GB model.

The Switch is launching with LoZ, a game series whose major releases have consistently been high scorers

Right, just preordered Binding of Isaac for the Switch from Videogamesplus in lovely Canada...
    Cost around €45 including shipping.
I don't expect it to arrive in time for launch day though, but it'll be great to have such a cracking game on a physical cart.

Me as well. I didn't pick up a Wii U, hummed and hawed the entire time and then the NX was announced. I even own an amiibo and have nothing to use it on.

I'm justifying the day one purchase on the basis that I have all the money that I didn't spend on the Wii U to spend on it. Might as well get in at the start!

Yeah but €45 is too high imo and he already has it on handheld.

    Fiver or tenner seems reasonable

Given it's like €25 on Steam for Afterbirth and Rebirth €45 isn't by too bad.

It's also Nintendo which puts the price up

That's a bit low even if it is dirt cheap on other platforms. It should probably be €20-25. There's a few publishers trying to exploit early Switch buyers. Konami and Capcom can go and do one as well. W@nk€r$!
