You went LC. Fair play. I only saw the 2nd half. Great hurling for this time of year.

Any day there is a Clare team heading for croker is a good day!

And I paid in heavy coin today. Everything that could go wrong did. Started with tractor not starting after the frost then a bale fell down onto a slatted tank, when I found it the cows had it torn up and were lying off on it. Had to sprong the f***er out. Went to out farm to find a cow wearing an 8' gate as a necklace. Some job catching a limo suckler to get that off.
In on the couch now contemplating whether to have Indian, Chinese or chipper.

    I don't often get mad.

But if you want to see how ignorant and self entitled "some" people have become in this country.

Look over at a thread titled six million people starving in Somalia in After Hours.

Food aid is not a good thing longterm, population control to the local environment and what it can support or afford is.

The same thing was said about this country by the Whigs during our famine.
    Look how that turned out.

The people of Cork still remember the Chocktaw indians who provided aid during our famine.
Who here remembers yellow meal from America?

When your starving you need food end of.
We have the food here. Too much in fact.

The development of the country can begin later.

People do need to help themselves I agree. Not sure population control should be the first port of call, I suspect better governance might help, but I don't know enough about the Somali situation to be honest...

But at the same time, you can't turn your back on starving people either... so I would be in support of food aid, even if I know it's not a long term solution...

None of us remember the famine though, only what we are told or read via someone else with their own twist.
Food aid to get over this shorterm bump yes, but it can't become expected and allow populations grow to unsustainable levels in an area that can't support it.

I get that, but supporting people to have multiple kids so one can reach adulthood is an issue when deathrates have been dropping on the whole via food aid etc.

Yes - as I get your arguement that they have to help themselves...

But regardless of what they do or don't do, or why they are starving - they are still starving, and I think people shouldnt be left starve... however they arrived there...

Especially in the wasteful world we find ourselves in (in Europe, and the states)

It has been shown esp in Bangladesh that it is possible to reverse that trend of having large families with education.
As a culture develops a larger middle class the family size decreases.

Somalia is just a whole societal breakdown. Nobody should starve. Its the the first basic Maslow need and a human right. If it takes food aid, so be it. Yes, it is the least desired method.

I wouldn't be comfortable with this looking down on people and proclaiming about population controls.

Who are we to preach to another people about population control.
It sounds too agricultural and dangerous to me.

Why does a country have to grow it's own food?
    This one doesn't.
Go into the supermarket and see where your food comes from.

We can easily afford our food, and with a little shake up could provide a balanced stapple diet easily. That argument is just being silly of ohhh remember the famine, didn't populations recover to a more sustainable level?

Food aid so these places can continuoslly increase a population they can not afford to keep in the safety net only puts more people in poverty, education and stable government and a decline in birthrates as more children can reach adulthood witha chance of a future will.

You need to stop generalizing it and talking about populations like they are somehow different from you or me.

My own father came from a family of 10.
All the children were sent out to work or got scholarships to attend second level education.

These same people in Somalia have big families (I'm not even sure they do have big families) because of increased infant mortality rates and to bring in extra income into the household.

As WJ said increasing wealth or wages in a household (usually) brings a reduction in children born.

These people are not stupid just poor.

So now you simply try to imply casual racism, gg/wp.

Like i said ood aid is not a good thing longterm, population control to the local environment and what it can support or afford is.

Would it not be a better idea to relocate all our foreign direct investment companies from ireland out there and provide employment instead?

And let them be the wealthy country buying food from us poor farmers where we can grow it.

Rather than a foreign country impose population control on another.

I think that would be fairest option.

Right, Intel is going out next week and Google the week after and then maybe we could get BMW to set up out there as well.
    Sounds good.:)

Was reading the label on a bottle of rapidexon this morning, it says do not use in horses producing milk for human consumption. I never knew that horse milk was used by humans!

Not this side of Mongolia, anyway!

There were farms in Russia in the 80s milking horses. I remember reading a bit about it. There were yields of around 1k liters given but I don't remember the solids though.
