Also Murray is the best SH in the world for my money but he does kick a bit too much sometimes. Perhaps it's the gameplan but I've seen him do it for both Munster and Ireland, kicking ball away in the final few minutes when it's not the right option.
You are spot on with this one. He did it again today when we absolutely needed to hold on to it.

Ah give over mate. We are in competition if u dont believe this is a disaster u should have a talk with ypurself. No disgrace i agree but a complete fup up? Yes

I half agree with you here. People go on about us beating SA/Aus/NZ. Making us out to be world beaters. That's ridiculous.
SA are atrocious, Italy beat them. Aus are notoriously up and down in between W Cups. Beating NZ was the only real achievement there. And that wasn't in what I'd term a competition.

Ringrose was pretty disappointing today. Defensively he seemed to be unsure of what space he was in. Hopefully it is something he will learn from.

Thought Jackson did well but he needed to kick more. The Scots were coming up in a strong line (often offside) and we needed to turn then back on their heels.

Rory Best had his usual lineout wobbles but in truth he had only Toner to aim at. Scotland are always strong on line out defence.

Stander for his power takes the ball into contact too often. You might get over the line at pro12 level but not on days like today.

I would say we offloaded the ball about 3 or 4 times in the whole match. It becomes predictable. It is why Munster won't go far in Europe either. No creativity.

Hard to make many changes as how good are the replacements? Especially in the back 3 where you are looking at O'Halloran, Healey and maybe Adam Byrne but none of them are screaming selection either.

I would push Zebo to full back. At least he can counter some bit.

The biggest worry is the lack of good back line coaching. We didn't produce one good back line move in the entire game.

Anyway Italy up next so we should be able to get some momentum back and there will be less expectation on the team now.

I wouldn't be as harsh on Ringrose. We have to remember it was his 6 nations debut after all. He'll learn. Many a centre got a roasting early in their international career and learned from it and he was far from our worst player on the day

I screamed when he did that.

That was from outside our own 22, keeping the ball for too many phases is less productive than kicking in a lot of scenarios like that, however it was poorly executed.

Kicking it was fine but there was a box kick late in the game that absolutely nobody chased and that's what gets on my wick.

I think the problem is the Ireland team's lack of consistency. A couple of months ago we are euphoric that we manage to beat the Kiwis for the first time in our history, we ran them close in the second game, we beat the aussies and south africa on African soil, understandably there was huge anticipation that we may be on for a 6 nations title, then we stumble at the first hurdle, against a team who hadn't won their first home game since 2006.

Schmidt's Ireland has enthralled and infuriated not just over the entire time he has been in charge of the ireland setup but at the micro level even within games. How often have we seen Ireland play one half at one pace of intensity and execution only to undermine it by playing the other half of the game below par. Usually we seem to take a lead in the first half and get peared back in the second, but today it was the reverse.

We have to start seeing a solid and consistent 80 minutes from Ireland, and we have to see successive wins from Ireland in games that matter. No its not the end of the world but that point is neither here nor there, if you are trying to win a 6 nations / triple crown / grand slam you need to be beating Scotland full stop.

No matter who the coach is though, we don't seem to be fully able to shake the inconsistency. It's always the same with us isnt it?

Stander could be under pressure for the jersey next week. He grew into the game in the second half but was anonymous in the first.

One thing I would criticise Rory Best for today was his penalty calls. (This has been a huge problem for Ulster this season too).

Too often in the first half we went for the lineout (where we were struggling) instead of taking the points on offer and building our way into the game.

As good as NZ are they will always take the points and build from it.

He could, but there's a few that would be in the queue ahead of him for that first half

It wasn't chase able, the hang time was awful and down to Murray being tired. Failure to use the bench again

Entire back row was anonymous in the first half.

Heaslip was marshalling the team and cleaning up plenty of ball as well as making a nuisance of himself, SOB was at least trying to get some go-forward ball.

Infuriating to play so badly for so long, still find ourselves ahead only to throw it away with needless penalties.

The one dimensional biff bash up the middle stuff you can blame on Joe but the inept lineouts, rucks and defense were down to the players. Scotland had us for lunch out of touch.

We need an option at back of the linout - VdF could supply that but those skills - and his other attributes in the loose - were left on the bench far too long.

Our game plan was to overpower Scotland and for a while it looked like we might get away with it as they were running out of gas in the last 15. But we handed back the initiative and didn't deserve to win.

Murray kept choosing the blind side from the back of rucks. He was obviously seeing something the rest of us weren't because it wasn't working that well.

Hard to even use players performances in the first half as a measure of who performed tbh. The whole lot of them were pretty ****ing dire

Disagree, thought they were all poor first half. Heaslip also had two high profile errors second half.

I certainly wouldn't single out stander anyway.

I don't think there'll be many changes for next week, the players will be given the chance to get today out of their system.

Which were Heaslip's errors? Games a bit of a blur to me now

Why does Murray kick possession away so often?

Here's one. Terrible pass that (quite literally) threw a try away.

He is used to playing on a team that can defend...

He's told to. It worked a few times today but backfired more often than not.

Off loading to a Scottish player and getting isolated when Barclay turned him over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,899 ✭✭✭✭BBDBB

I think we missed POM, at line out and in the breakdown,
I'm considering the balance of our back row, in terms of what they offer I'm coming to the conclusion that heaslip is the spare man

Ah yeah the offload, unlucky with Henshaw slipping but he should have taken it into contact. Being turned over was because of a failed cleanout though.
