1st August security patch, what is BTU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,972 ✭✭✭Flaccus

BTU = British Unbranded CSC (country sales code)

This process will wipe your phone. So make sure you have backed up what you need (use something like Samsung Smart Switch on your PC)

    1. Download Nougat firmware to PC
    S7:https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/120140/G930FXXU1DPLT_G930FOXA1DPLT_BTU/
    S7 Edge:https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/120208/G935FXXU1DPLT_G935FOXA1DPLT_BTU/

    2. Install Odin on PC
On bottom of sammobile download page, download Odin v3.11.1, extract .exe, and open Odin V3.1.1.1 in Administrator mode. i.e. Right click .exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    3. Install Samsung USB drivers or Samsung Kies on PC
    http://www.devfiles.co/download/AbRa7wHc/SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
    http://www.devfiles.co/download/a2FLlyV5/Kies3Setup.exe

    4. Enable developer options, usb debugging and oem unlocking on phone
developer options and usb debugging : http://www.enableusbde...-galaxy-s7-edge.html
    oem unlocking : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pReP9S6EYA

    5. Boot phone into download mode
Power off phone and press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons. Release Power button when Samsung logo appears.

    6. Connect phone to PC with usb cable (one that came with phone) and wait until you get a blue icon in Odin.

    7. Flash the firmware files to your phone using Odin
    - In the files download pane on the right, check the file box for BL, AP, CP, and CSC buttons.

    - Click each button in turn, and for each one browse to the appropriate firmware file in the location you downloaded the firmware to. For example, for BL there will be a file in your download folder which has BL in the title. Select this. (Option 3 in the below link). It may take some time for Odin to read each file. Be patient.

    https://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30800

    - In the left frame select Options, and make sure the following are selected : Re-partition, F.reset time, Auto reboot.

    - Click Start

    8. Wait a few minutes for Odin to tell you everything has completed.

    9. It's usually a good idea also to wipe the cache partition. This ensures the correct CSC is applied.

    ..........

I'm going to give this a shot on my S7 Edge. Samsung Cloud won't sync on my phone for some reason. Can anyone recommend another backup tool?

Managed to get Samsung Cloud working. My problem is Package Disabler Pro. I had some needed packages disabled.

I installed 7.0 BTU a few days ago before I seen this thread. I seen a few places recommending the clean install.

I went ahead and just upgraded keeping my data.

I don't seem to notice any problems and 7.0 is flying. Would it still be recommended to re-do it resetting my phone/wiping the cache partition?

Yes, it's a good idea to wipe the cache partition. Sometimes the correct CSC doesn't take unless you do this. It's harmless and won't wipe anything out. I always do this when I upgrade the firmware on any phone.
    https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-30240

I went with clean install as I was going to do a factory reset anyway and all my data is on the cloud or a micro-sd card. I think a lot on this thread enabled 'Lock Screen and Security::Protect Encrypted Data :: Require Lock Screen' option which prevents your data from getting wiped out.

I've done the install myself. Was previously Vodafone firmware but I'm not waiting months for it.

Update went ok, I would of prefered to just to an update but it did a clean install, most of my data came back from Samsung Cloud I was just missing the likes of Nova launcher setup etc.

New settings menu is taking some getting used to and my keyboard has seemed to change. I can't remember if I used a custom one or just the 7.0 keyboard is different.

I installed the BTU update, will I receive over the air updates now still ?

Hard to say. If its unlocked to any network then it means you will get OTA from Samsung directly. If it's locked to someone like VF, Three, Meteor etc.. I'm not sure if flashing Nougat will in fact allows you to get updates from Samsung, as I think the carrier ID of the phone is locked to that network. That's why I made the suggestion below to update to the firmware just before Nougat and then perform an automatic update from your phone.

Did the install a few days ago, noticed that my fingerprint reader isn't working that well, Spotify is also crashing often.

that's strange, I find my fingerprint reader is reading much quicker than before, Spotify seems to be working as before also.

Everything working well for me as well after the update. Just one thing what resolution is everyone using? It seems odd the resolution defaults to 1080p

Thanks for the reply. Two questions from this:

If I am not going to get OTA updates, Do I have to do a clean install every time or can I do a upgrade, leaving my data the way it is?

How can I go about unlocking my phone - a Request from Vodafone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,972 ✭✭✭Flaccus

If you are out of contract then VF will send you an unlock code. You just need to boot the phone with a sim from another network and follow VF's instructions, which is usually to just enter the code on the screen when asked. If they won't unlock it, just go to sim-unlock.net or some other site and get your phone unlocked there. Usually it will cost around 15-20 euro. Then you will definitely get OTA updates from Samsung. Alternatively if you leave the phone locked to your network the updates would still come from them assuming the carrier id has not been changed when you flashed the BTU. This part I am still unsure about.

Only if you bought an international variant of the phone or installed the BTU firmware as discussed in the posts above.

Once you flash BTU properly you will get OTA updates whether phone is SIM locked or not.

I'm almost nearly sure that if you changed to BTU without wiping data fully you won't get OTA updates though.

    WQHD all the way

When you setup Nougat first, the Samsung (clean master) app optimises the phone for everyday use which is 1080P but you can do into settings and set it to QHD. There are other performance modes too - entertainment, gaming and performance. All of these are QHD with UHD upscaling.

That makes sense allright. The fact it's an official firmware you are flashing will wipe everything without complaint including the caller id. But wiping the data and repartitioning during this process is the way to go if you want to ensure you get the updates from samsung directly.

I came across an article the other day about a lot of people having a pink vertical line on the right of the display. What happens to mine today... A pink vertical line.
Could I get this repaired? Even though the glass is in a bad state on my phone,? And it's still rebooting every day.

    https://www.androidpit.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-problem-pink-vertical-line-on-display
Also, I haven't updated to nougat yet.

I flashed, all my data was wiped and I needed to install everything again but I'm pretty sure I didn't click re-partition?

I wonder will I get updates, I suppose I will just have to wait and see.

Also rang Vodafone and they refused to give me my unlock code of course

I flashed also without doing the repartition, you can download apps to tell you what csc you are on, mine shows BTU so id say it will be fine

Don't know would the replace mine. Glass is in poor shape and a volume button is missing. Looks like it had a go in a tumble dryer😂
Definitely I will invest in a good case for my next phone.

So found what could be the right answer.

the CSC file is what causes OTA updates. If you flashed this from the download you should get OTA updates.
