I see posts today about the new Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2444317/galaxy-s7-and-s7-edge-launch-date-confirmed-as-first-official-images-leak).
When will these phones be avaialble to buy here in Ireland?

Seriously? They haven't even been announced yet and won't be until the 21st February.

Same as every year - March/April. Don't expect any huge changes from Sammy, but we'll see.

From s2 to s4 were just incremental changes.. Then big jump from s5 to s6..

So am expecting that Samsung go back to the incremental changes till probably s9

I wouldn't call S5 to S6 a big jump, just a big change in design language. Loss of waterproofing, removable battery and SD are a step back for a lot of people.

Sounds like the removable SD will be coming back though.

Biggest changes coming from the s7 are 3000mah battery, return of microsd card slot, waterproof and always on screen.

S7 edge will be 5.5 screen , 3600mah battery , waterproof microsd card slot and always on screen

Hope they improve the speaker. The last Samsung phone with a decent speaker was the galaxy note 4, and the speaker for that was at the back.

Really? I think my S6 Edge+ has a louder/clearer speaker than my M9. Prefer Edge+ for general background sound, but M9 much nicer when holding screen in front of your face.

I was on about design.. With yearly releases, there'll be no massive year on year tech improvements.

Sd cards are coming on for 20 years old, waterproof case are available now, don't need a removable battery, when you can just charge your phone mid day

Yeah, I happily live without SD card, as long as I have minimum 32gb device. Having the option of an SD card is nice though. It makes no sense why manufacturers remove features like this for no reason. The M9 is a full metal device, yet you still can use an external SD card. Samsung also removed the IR blaster from the edge+. Sure, it's not a major necessity, but why remove a feature which can be useful and surely doesn't cost much to implement?

You can't always charge your phone midday, I still think that battery tech needs to improve in that sense. I have a quick charge 2.0 portable charger though, and if I know I'll probably need a top-up, I'll make sure I have it on me. I'm pretty sure if a survey was done asking whether people wanted twice as long battery life, or twice as fast charging, we all know what the answer would be.

Very happy with my S6 right now. It'd take something huge to get me to jump.

The main problem is removing the sd card feature and then expecting people to pay more for phone storage because they can't add in the card.

You want to remove the sd card, fine put out phones with 64gb and 128gb storage and charge the same as you did for the previous models with the sd card option. If you are not prepared to do that then leave the sd card option there.

With all the fuss about getting rid of the micro SD card slot I think it was googles feature of merging phone and external storage in lollipop that was the game changer.

Return of microSD means I might at last trade up from my S4!

I can understand the other side of the argument. Internal storage is less volatile, faster and more reliable. I know of many people who have lost data on an external SD.

An example is using the A9 RAW camera mode on my M9 with external SD. Even though I have a fast external SD, the write time was so slow, I had to wait a good while between taking photos.

Always nice to have the option, though.

In fairness, the HTC one M9 got poor reviews for its speaker Compared to the m8. It's
Speaker test on gsmarena got a below average rating. Samsung so faired a bit better but was nowhere near as close to the Galaxy St and got a lot of negative reaction when the gsmarena review came out.

Belive it or not, the phones with the best speakers out there are the HTC one m8, galaxy note 4 and the one plus two

Here's a question......the S6 Edge Plus is being offered for a decent-ish price on Vodafone on contract. Less than the iPhone 6S, (not the 6S+ just the ordinary 6S).

So is it worth getting it now or holding off to see what the S7s will be like? I can't see the Edge+ specs suddenly being obsolete when the S7s are out, but you know how it is, these manufactures love their planned obsolescence. I'm still running a Note 3 from a few years back so I've no issue running older phones.

I can't see the Edge+ on the Vodafone website. I actually left Vodafone because I was due an upgrade and they said they weren't getting the Edge+. Stupid thing is you could take out a Vodafone contract with the edge+ at carphone warehouse.

To answer your question, no, it won't be obsolete for quite some time. It has 4gb of ram, at least matching the next generation, and it will receive marshmallow this month.

I wouldn't be committing to it now, though. Might as well wait a month to see how the S7 compares, and if there's a decent price drop for the edge+ when the S7 comes out.

I saw the Edge+ on the Carphone Warehouse. It's still there.

I think you're right, I'll hold off to see what Samsung deliver with the new ones in a month. I think Sony might be announcing new Xperias soon as well.

I haven't heard anything about Sony releasing something new again, the Z5 is still pretty new.

Over the next month or two, you're looking at Sammy S7, LG G5 and HTC M10. I'm a massive fan of HTC, but the M9 was average at best.

Very nearly bit the bullet on the S6 Edge+ last week. Think I'll wait to see what the S7 Edge+ is like. Worst case scenario, I'll get the edge+ for cheaper!

Really? I had heard rumours they may release it. Unless the S7 Edge is significantly better than the S6 Edge +, I'll be going last gen!

Theres reports out today that they'll release the note 6 this time for Europe but not the galaxy s7 plus because of low demand

I got the S6 edge+, but would have loved the Note. Funny how they say lack of demand, it was a nightmare to get my hands on the S6e+, think it took me about a month in the end. Vodafone didn't even carry it, either. Pretty weird.

Also talk of charging 0 to 80% in 30 minutes. That seems to point to quick charge 3.0 that comes with snapdragon 820

Rounding the back and the front on the edge variant is a good idea - surprised they didn't do that in the first place. My S6 edge+ is much more comfortable to hold when in a case. Without a case, it almost feels too sharp and thin.

What's the best place to buy the s7 from sim free when it's released? Do Samsung Ireland sell direct from the website?

Looks very close to the s6 from the front and camera doesn't look as bulky. Not a bad complaint the s6 is and feels brilliant so no need change it.

Here's a leaked photo of a boxed S7, and also a boxed LG G5 to compare!

I got an S6 in Argos so that it definitely would be sim free instead of risking it from a phone shop. It was a month or two after it came out so I'm not sure if they had them in stock on the release date.

Yeah, it doesn't look as nice as the s6 although hard to say with those shots.

I really like their hardware, it's a real shame that they make such a balls of the OS. If the customisation crap was optional I would get one right away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 666 ✭✭✭Speckydodge

never had a sammy but I'm pretty set for the s7 edge with a 200gb sd card...from what I've read we'll be getting the exynos version rather then the snapdragon, does anyone know if this is harder to root etc? I've hard horror stories about their OS and I like a vanilla rom if possible

They claimed their research showed that Europeans didn't really use the stylus so instead they pushed the Edge plus.
