Sorry just to clarify if I flash the rom to get the update now will that mean I need to manually apply updates in future or will they automatically come OTA?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

S7 is not a 4k screen. Its QHD, which is 1440x2560. 4k (or more correctly UHD) is 2160x3840, a totally pointless resolution on something only 5.5 inches.

The resolution is not pointless, it needs to be that high, and preferably 6K+, for use with the Gear VR, because each eye only sees less than half of the screen, which is why 4K and 800 dpi is rumoured for the S8.

Got my Samsung s7 on contract last August from eir and no software updates at all since, does this mean I haven't a hope of getting nougat?

December patch here on Three here build number is G935FXXS1BPLC. I received a mini update last week of about 20 mb - waiting patiently on 7.0 :pac:

Mine was Aug as well on meteor/eir. They are always slow to release a new firmware, so just flashed the BTU (UK) 7.0 using Odin. No issues at all.

Running it a few days now and the battery life is about the same, comfortably getting 1 day and can stretch it to 1.5 days if I needed.

My SIM-free, unmodified, S7 is currently downloading a 1254MB update. Must be the Nougat update. :)

On December security patch with Vodafone and still no sign of any big update :(

And it was! Delighted to have the blue light filter back.

I'm used to it now. I've grown to like the notifications, and battery life has definitely improved (Android Doze is much better in Nougat).

Lol at people crying over no Vodafone update. And as if the phone being 'unlocked' should makes a blind bit of difference?

I stand corrected. So it's useless except for the 1% people who use VR.

VF say Nougat will be here in the next few months. Pretty crap. I guess some people would not risk flashing their phone with Odin.

there's practically zero risk using odin once done properly which can be easily achieved

Even with an unlocked phone or an international model (be it HTC10 or Samsung S7), once you bung in the VF sim, you get a message about as a reward for being a loyal customer you are being offered a VF app. This message never goes away unless you download the Vodafone app. This is the yoke that contains all their crap like their SMS app,VF protect and other rubbish. Luckily once you download it, you can uninstall it without every opening it. As far as I can tell that's the only VF stuff. Everything else seems to be included in Nougat from Samsung (one note, one drive, excel, word, a few samsung tools etc..). Luckily no facebook, snapchat or instagram.

I have Three locked S7 edge G935F if i install BTU using odin will i get the OTA updates from then on? Do i need to have the phone unlocked aswell?

I havent tinkered with this phone at all but i use to mess around with my old HTC's (m7 and m8) and root them flash them etc. I could never get OTA updates and had to keep doing it manually. Has something changed?

A few people on this thread have installed Nougat on locked phones. I guess they won't know where the OTA's will come from until there is one released after Nougat.

One way you could check this is to install the BTU prior to Nougat. And then check for updates on your phone. If Nougat comes down then you know OTAs are coming from Samsung. Otherwise you are still locked to 3. If that is the case you can manually install the latest BTU and unlock your phone at some point in the future if you want to receive OTA's from Samsung.
