It's also about the markings.

I used those terms because using the word knacker to describe travellers is not generally welcomed around here.

I was also speaking of Romany gypsies, btw, based on the times we've found trespassers both at home, and in neighbouring houses - it's always been people from those groups, always.

Not trying to cause any pants wetting, just don't want a ban/infraction

This is very true as I seen three guys drawing a circle on the back of my car with chalk last night! When I got down from my apartment they had gone!As for you smart arses who don't know much about it, chalk doesn't washed away when it's highly compressed, this left a thick layer on the car, it's being raining here all day and it's still on it as new. I'm just biding my time for them to try the next move!

If criminals were doing this other criminals would pick up on it straight away and just get in before them. It makes no sense to put in the work of finding an easy mark then advertising it to the world.

The fact that there's no actual pictures of these signs in the real world outside someone's house goes to show they're working on pure speculation.

+1, it would be similar to tesco building up a database of a customer's preferences using their clubcard info, investigating all their spending habits etc, and then just freely sharing this info with dunnes stores.

I see this ridiculously stupid story is doing the rounds again.

Indo is so short of journslists they seem to have dim-witted interns rehashing and sensationalising stories that crop up every couple of years in countries all over the world.

Quite obvious that burglars don't use phones/email if their only means of communication is chalk in a country where it rains more days than it doesn't.

How on earth are people so gullible?

One thing nobody seems to question about all this bullsh1t chalk marking hysteria is what are you gonna do if you find one of these markings outside your house?
Sit there night and day waiting for them? People should be vigilant and take the proper security measures regardless of any chalk markings.

2 years ago my alarm went off at 6:30am in the morning, ran downstairs guns blazing, nothing
Checked cctv, nothing
Next day at 6:30am alarm went off again
I thought my alarm was faulty, and didn't really sleep well cos I was half expecting it to go off
When I got downstairs my outter hall door was wide open (hadn't locked it properly, thought pushing handle up locked it, they couldn't get through the second one before I scared them away. Inner door had a twisty lock, so always properly locked it
After checking cctv I could see some prick open my hall door in seconds, quicker than I could with keys
An alarm, 2 cars in driveway, cctv did not deter him
Even after alarm went off he still tried opening inner door
I live in an estate
After googling burglaries in work, I came across this chalk myth
Sure enough when I came home I could see two chalk lines on my pillar

I read a while ago that they have different marks outside. Some marks mean the house is alarm, if you have a dog etc.

In all seriousness, though, why would burglars want come straight back to a house the alarm went off in? If they were gonna mark it, they'd probably be telling themselves NOT to come back. Unfortunate coincidence I'd say.

There's been a spate of robberies in my rural area. I was talking to a council worker today who said that indeed, some guy nearby had rang the council looking to see what was going to be done on the road outside their house : there was a spray mark outside his gate. Council boss hadn't anything on schedule for that location, but told him he'd check with water crowd, just in case : there was nothing planned either.
So the word is out in our area, at least, that a mark, whatever mark, not little drawings, outside your gates should be investigated.
No harm in that anyway, right ?

In rural areas where houses are few and far between, I wouldn't be surprised if gangs had some way to earmark a few places.

There's also a story that a lady in local small town found a mark outside her father's property : the man had moved to a home, so the house was empty most of the time.

edit : not on about some elaborate code here, just mark, of whatever kind.

Yeah, I think anything that just pops up some morning outside the gate could be a mark tbh. The gangs that operate around here would not be from the immediate area, so I can see how even a coloured plastic bag hanging off a tree outside, a dot of spray or some such would be useful to the scourers themselves or the ones meant to do the robbing.

We've been told to be very vigilant and try and spot vans/cars of certain colours and makes by the gardai, but sure there's many of the same in the area, so any other little sign we can spot might help.

If you are Rural, Your best bet is be vigilant. If it looks out of the ordinary it probably is.

I'm not sure the gangs operating in our parts are that sophisticated, or even communicate well enough to share geo locations that way. My guess is they grunt, nod, or spit at each other.

And sat nav in rural parts is famously crap, BTW.
