    Monday 16th January
Bike: 12.2 miles x 2 commute in miserable misty rain.

    Tuesday 17th January
    3.2 miles @ 10:56 avg HR 131
Headed up to the club and did a few laps on the track and back home again. The session was a tempo run but I was just doing some easy miles keeping a good eye on the HR.

    Wednesday 18th January
Bike: 12.2 miles x 2 commute - perfect weather conditions for a change!

RUN: ALSAA paced mile - 1 mile @ 7:40(official result) (clock said 7:34 when I went under but watch agrees with official results)
Headed to Santry to give this a shot, having run some good times (for me) in the 2 mile league I fancied my chances at a 7:15 or 7:20 min mile tonight although secretly I was hoping for 7 - HA! Firstly (lets get the excuses in early shall we  I haven't done any mile specific training, or any consistent training of any kind, secondly I cycled in & out of work today, great prep... thirdly, well I have no more excuses! Unless you count that fact that the first lap was too slow (according to expert eye witnesses ie Singer) so pacer had to speed up for following laps. Conditions were absolutely perfect but I just wasn't up to the job, simple as that. My legs felt great but the lungs were struggling to keep up, I was last in my heat too just to add to the disappointment!

Stayed around to watch Singer absolutely knock it out of the park with a 5:50 mile and LOL at his blase comments post race. A couple of clubmates were there too and massive well done to the (youthful :D) and speedy fletch who looked like he was jogging for a 5:02

Big thanks to Mrs KennyG who was there with mini KennyG and who cheered us on. The organisation of the event was fantastic and disappointment aside I did enjoy it. Lovely to catch up with The Muppet who did indeed leave me for dust in the last 100M, well done T, see you at the next one!

Anyway, onwards, I now have two mile specific plans to peruse and hopefully I can do some justice at the next one.

That's what ya get for all that TRI stuff!!!! You couldn't run a mile some 6 months ago, it's not what you wanted granted but it's better than not being out there at all. You'll improve on that, your to determined and driven not to.

You forgot stubborn....just looked at my jingle bells splits & Christmas day race, I ran a 7:34 and a 7:36 in those so that really puts it in perspective. Rubbish result shoulda done much better.

Nice meeting you again AM . We'll knock a few seconds off those laps in the months ahead . I though the first lap was slow too but looking at the splits it was my quickest .

I'm afraid the expert eye witness is probably unreliable, from looking at the splits it looks like it was the 8 mile group that went around the first lap a bit slow... then again you weren't at the front of the group so maybe that's what I was thinking :o

Anyway, it was great to see you!

Splits! I thought I didn't have any because I hadn't hit my own watch on the way round but I forgot it was chip timed....

Mine were .04 1:48 1:55 1:58 1:56, it was never going to happen was it  We never did a warm up either, next time I'm skipping the talk and doing a few laps while the other groups are running.

Indeed I was thinking that myself afterwards , at least you nagged me reminded me to do a cool down, thanks for that. :)

Someone asked me at the startline if I was the pacer so at least I must have looked the part of a 7 minute miler.

Seriously though all things considered I think we both did ok

Do you reckon taking in slower mile, in paced mile just before you are due to
Run would work as warm up, say if going for 6 mins doing 8 min mile.

    Instructions are as follows:

'About half an hour before the race loosen up your legs with 10 to 15 mins easy jogging, followed by a set of four to six 20 second strides to get your wheels spinning and your heart humming'. (wheels?! is that what the 5 min milers were using?! no wonder I was so slow!!! :D).

Personally I'd go with a few laps of the track, followed by a faster lap of the track, followed by some sprint drills, followed by some shorter strides, followed by some longer strides.

You need to be fully warmed up as you can't exactly ease into the race as you can with longer distances.

Yep, good advice. Funnily enough I did all that before the 2 mile club races  we were just busy chatting truth be told. We had done a group 'warm up' in the room upstairs that included running on the spot, high knees etc etc so it's not as bad as it sounds but yes, epic fail on the warm up.

Just leaving this here for anyone interested:)

    http://www.runningwritings.com/2014/09/getting-warm-up-right.html?m=1

If you don't have much of an attention span like me, although it is an interesting read with warmups for different races and workouts, here's the TL;DR

    Example 4: warm-up for 1 mile race
    *15 minutes easy
    *Dynamic stretching and sprint drills
    *Put on spikes
*4x100m strides at 5k, 3k, mile, 1000m pace with 100m jog recovery between strides
*3min rest, 600m at anaerobic threshold pace
*3-4min rest, 2x200m at goal mile pace with 200m jog recovery, finishing 7-10min before race
*Easy jogging / walking until race beings

    Thursday 19th Jan
24.5 miles on the bike in and out of work. No running

    Friday 20th Jan
24.5 miles on the bike commute, again, no running but 4 days on the bike this week for a total of 97.8 miles, should I go out and do a loop of the village on the bike?!! :D

    Saturday 21st January
Cabinteely parkrun 35 min pacer - 3.1 miles avg hr 147 official time 34:45....oops, a bit too fast although I did mange to get a few folks in well under the 35, went through the chute and ran back down the hill to encourage a few more in. Fantastic atmosphere today with a whopping 217 runners, we normally have around 70.

    Sunday 22nd January
Women's meet & Train: 2 mile in 16:50 :( avg HR 174, max 187 (1 beat off my actual max).
I was about to type 'disaster' but that's probably a bit over the top. My worst XC performance this season though (even slower than cow park). Didn't have a great night sleep the last couple of nights and wile the dizzy spells are gone I'm still tired and, as tang keeps reminding me, I"m an aul wan, so I knew this morning this wasn't going to be pretty. I did my best though as the HR shows and I can't ask any more than that. We were down 2 runners on my team so had the minimum 4 so no chance of crying off. Did a decent enough warm up as per El Caballo's article of 1 mile and then some strides & dynamic stretches followed by a cool down lap post race, Total miles for the day just under 4.

Positives: Passed about 8 runners towards the end of lap one, only passed by 2 runners after that (and they weren't the girls I'd passed). Held off a Waterstown Warriers girl who made a good attempt to take me just out of the forest the 2nd time round.
Negatives: A lot, but no point crying over spilt milk (ridiculous at my level to get upset over a stupid race). I need to get back on track with my diet as I've been eating far to much rubbish and I know that impacts how I'm feeling. Dry January didn't go too well either but will start again from now and continue into February. Luckily we have some real runners on our A team and they finished in 1st and 3rd place 😃

Meet & Train ain't getting any easier that's for sure! 144 runners out today .

You can only give it your best shot on any given day. Take heart from the positives, fix what's fixable and don't dwell on the negatives.

I should probably take that advice too

Nic pacing on the park run :)

Great work here, it showed that you weren't prepared to just sit back and take Position X. The fire is very much alive! A lot of the other things are things that you can control, so I'm confident of much more improvement to come :)

Oh it's very definitely a race!! It's a Women's cross country league, about 20 or so clubs I'd say going on yesterday's volume! From Dublin, Kildare, Meath and possibly Wicklow (can't remember). Calling it Women's 'meet and train' sounds like a lovely little get together.....it's very competitive

That's the thing about racing in a team, and I'm the 4th scorer so every position really does matter, I knew I was going to place worse than previously but I wasn't going to jog around either, especially with the club captain standing on the sidelines!

Women's 'meet & train' sounds like a knitting group!!! Women's XC League or something is far more befitting.

great cycling mileage, this might have something to do with the tiredness!!

As the others have said take encouragement from the positives and work on the things you have pinpointed as causing issues.
