Glancing through it, their protein levels are pretty dire along with pretty low yields but id guess feed levels have been pulled backed drastically their under new management
Seems alot of the bulls been used where high type low solids holstein, whoever was over breeding policy their seriously was off the ball down through the years

I've got about 4km of electric fencing to be put in next week. Will set me back about 2k. One of them jobs I should have done 4 years ago!

OK I have well blown that budget ha, putting multiple gaps in all the paddocks is utterly eating up eggs/strainers and time! Be probably more like 3k by the end.

What harm Tim if it's done right it's only dear day one, you certainly won't regret putting multiple gaps for paddocks in

How many paddocks of what size Tim? We've taken out a lot of internal divisions over the past few years. Much more flexible.

Do any of you pump milk from the parlour to the calf house? I was talking to a friend of mine and he was saying that he was told it was dangerous to use a submersible pump to pump milk directly to calves because of the air left in the milk after pumping.

I've never heard that so I said I would ask in case it was true.

None! All I'm doing is fencing both sides of the existing cow lane (replacing utterly crocked fencing), and then doing the boundaries of a few 10/14 ac silage paddocks. Paddocks will end up made up of pigtails, pull them up to spread fert/slurry etc.

Anyone here have cows out yet?

There's two lads near me after letting fresh calvers out today and others have the fert spread.

Haven't even started calving here yet.

    The year is flying.:D

I'd have thought a sub pump, even a food grade one, would cause a weak spot for washing.. better maybe if you can fill a barrel beside the tank direct from the tank or the delivery line and then pump from that?

I'm looking at options for delivering from the tank to a clean room at the moment and designing the wash is like trying to solve a rubiks cube.

Milkers went for an impromptu gallop this morning on the way to the parlour and judging by the amount of earth that went flying I won't be leaving em out for a bit. Drizzling most of the day here along with rain a few nights has things a bit softer.

Despite my reservations hit all heifer block with 35 units urea and 35 % cow block with with.bag urea today .2500 gallons slurry per acre on remainder .no calves for another 10 days and as soon as 14 cows /full row calved cows will be turfed out but not. Before Feb 1

Arklow over in the weather thread says to expect a very cold February so you might have to stretch it a bit:(

Half thinking of letting them out. Could want the silage worse in may.

2012 was an exceptionally dry spring.

    Don't shoot the messanger

The same thing crossed my mind today. Urea going out tomorrow. 40 units on everything. Half thinking of putting up a reel tomorrow also.

25 units urea out on milking ground bar 4 paddocks to get slurry. Silage ground to get a light coat of slurry before grazing mid march with yearlings

Why would you put cows out just after you spread urea? Id be afraid of nitrogen poisoning myself. Id give them at least a week if I was buffer feeding them on grass 3 if I wasn't.
