I don't know why they'd need to. They have people sending them stuff all the time.

It was said before about their number of followers on instagram looking like they were bought

Oh no I get that. I would 100% agree that the likes of CWTH has bought followers. It's quite obvious when you look into it. There's 50k followers but posts get max 10-20 likes. With that many followers you'd expect likes of circa 1k.

I was talking about the bigger bloggers. SJ, MUF, Pippa. I don't think they'd #ad if it wasn't an ad. Sure they they don't even #ad when it IS an ad. :P

Drop the bought follower discussion. It's not on topic and is speculation.
    Thx

Agreed with everything Rosemary said on snapchat last night about receiving gifts/paying tax etc

Yea I agree to with everything she said! I assume she said similar in the article she was on about ans I hope they don't twist her words and her point is taken properly! Because that is how it should be. Other bloggers should seriously take a few leaves from Her book!

I'm looking forward to reading this article about tax on free items. I think it's a ridiculous idea. How would you even calculate the percentage? If Benefit are sending out free brow kits that would by €45 to buy in stores, is a blogger to be taxed on the RRP?
And how would it even be measured, are they supposed to keep every bit of mail for the year or start making a record of things they didn't even ask for in the first place.

I'm not saying bloggers don't enjoy getting such perks, but I'm sure there's plenty of it that they don't want and will never use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,039 ✭✭✭✭retro:electro

It doesn't seem feasible to me either. How would it be monitored and executed? Surely they could just say they never received such an item.. I think it will just enable bloggers to be more shady than they currently are. Just simply #ad when they're meant to is something most of them can't grasp never mind making the rules more onerous.

Yes I 100% agreed with her. She pretty much said verbatim what i have been saying. PR post is obvious and very different to a blogger having and agreement with a vendor in return for goods/services (obviously if theyre paid cash it should be #ad but for goods they dont seem to think it should be #ad). A lot of bloggers get very defensive when this is pointed out however and you get attacked by their followers.

Grace was snapchatting a lot of Mothercare maternity clothes when she was pregnant. Not a #ad in sight. Someone obviously asked her and she got quite defensive that she was NOT being paid but that "they had contacted her and asked her to come in and pick items"...so she was advertising their maternity range in exchange for free clothes. It was madenning how she was either blissfully unaware of how she sounded or purposely choosing to be misleading..thats just one example out of hundreds.

Rosemary had a good point with regards perks you get from a regular job compared to a bloggers perks. I would take maternity leave over a free Benefit brow kit anyday

I said before I have no issue with free samples for perfectly practical reasons but this is nonsense. Every self employed person is in exactly the same position regarding maternity benefit and similar, free samples or no free samples. There are advantages and disadvantages in comparison to paye workers but free samples or lack of them have nothing to do with it.

Maternity leave is available to all, PAYE workers and self employed, so I don't really see how that's a perk.

I think there needs to be some clarification of what is being considered a gift. There's a huge difference between the use of a car and a brow product. I don't think the car should be tax free no matter what you want to call it. If an employee got the use of a car as a perk they'd still be paying tax on it.

I can't seem to quote the post I'm responding to, must be because I'm new.

Agreed. It was a ridiculous analogy

Just had a look at the goss.ie nominations there. Such shock to see Meagher's Pharmacy are sponsoring Influencer of the Year category - not!! Other sponsors for other categories come as no surprise either - Flormar, Dyson, Enhance Medical (perfect for the so called Irish Show Bizz world)!

Those jeans look amazing on Pippa, though she'd look amazing in a black sack.

Relevant to this thread as she's mentioning/promoting her jeans :D

Aimee Connolly is showcasing the Style Pro on her snapchat today and hasn't disclosed that it's an ad either. It's clearly an ad for Meaghers. Seriously how many times do we have to have this Style Pro shoved down our necks? We get it. You put your dirty brushes in, it spins them and they come away dry. WE GET IT. Christ I do not think I can take seeing one more blogger do a demonstration on it. I just snapped her there to say she should disclose if it's an ad but she has not replied yet.

Ha I said the same thing watching the snaps to my bf "her legs are probably 5 ft long". :D
Still wouldn't buy though unless I saw them in one of the pop up stores. I think most people know what style and brand of jeans they like and tend to stick to that.
They look much nicer than Suzannes but they are double the price. Having said that I think Suzannes seem to be all about the duck-butt look, wouldn't be for me.

Aimee has addressed my question publically on snapchat. She said it wasn't an ad because she wasn't paid cash. Meaghers are getting so much free publicity it's crazy.
One thing I did notice is after addressing it she snapped "thanks for all your lovely messages, I'm not upset". Jeez you'd swear I accused her of treason!

Edit: oh and in her defence of it not being an ad she says "I really admire Meaghers and work with Una very closely".. Make of that what you will.

Whinging to the masses it would seem then. Your ears should have been burning Anna as I'm sure the terms 'H8rs gonna H8' was being hurled your way quite a bit!!

Meaghers must be the most heavily advertised pharmacy in Ireland - ever!!

Crazy. Didn't realise it was so wrong to query whether something was an ad or not. Precious snowflakes.

It's mad. I've never been in it but I'm led to believe it's just a bog standard pharmacy, like nothing special that may warrant such heavy promotion or adulation.

Id personally be a bit miffed if I was a good customer, spending hundreds a year at full whack prices ..... yet every time u open a snapchat they're giving ramdomers free hampers and gifts for baby's and boyfs even ( grace)

Its not actually, quite a lot of smaller businesses do not pay maternity leave. Many people only get the statutory from social welfare.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭Toastytoes

Eh..I said maternity "leave" not maternity "pay"??? as in being allowed the 26 weeks off..

Whether your employer tops up the statutory benefit of not is down to one's individual contract but being allowed leave and state benefit are common to PAYE and self employed assuming the required contributions have been made.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,039 ✭✭✭✭retro:electro

Maternity benefit is AFAIK open to anyone whether they are employed or self employed as long as you satisfy certain PRSI conditions. Its not a "perk" it's a right, and it's there for every woman to avail of should they meet the requirements.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 435 ✭✭Toastytoes

Exactly Anna, it's not a perk.

And on a side note, if an employer does top up the state benefit, that is fully taxable so is not exactly a counter argument for bloggers getting tax free freebies from companies.

 Gonna try get this back onto bloggers mentioning/promoting products before it's closed again....

Do you thing Grace was sponsored by bareminerals? I know she used to work for them ( not for long ) and their sales went though the roof while she worked on their counter due to her promotion etc. She didn't just show them as she normally does, she showed them a few days ago and then swatched them all on her hands today. She gave it a few snaps.

I also presume she got her gym membership for free as she's posting the name every time she goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,877 ✭✭✭purplecow1977

I'd hate to be a blogger.

The free stuff would be cool, but to feel like you've to constantly snap your bits and #ad and give over such part of your personal life..... not for me! :D

Does anyone know if that story actually featured in the Indo today (the one Rosemary spoke of last night) ? Completely forgot to pick it up today.
