Just so everyone knows the battery drain issue isn't specific to the device or the update. It seems to be a problem with the Facebook app. I'm having the same problem all day on a Oneplus 3, as are many people on the Oneplus forum.

Uninstalling the Facebook and/or Messenger apps seems to solve the issue for now

In my case I don't have the Facebook app on my phone.
But then again my battery is back to normal now.

I had the same issue before and nothing to do with FB I'm afraid. Battery was never good imo on the S7. I ending up with just putting up with it - I still get a full day out of it so its not too bad.

Just got a 16Mb update...suppose only a security patch. On 3 by the way.
Regarding the pink line issue. Myself and 2 other work colleagues are in the same situation and having to send them back all started with the pink line within a couple of weeks of each other.

    What's the pink line issue?

Hmm. I noticed something similar all of a sudden the other day with the Accuweather app. Uninstalling it sorted it, it must be a bug that came with a recent app update.

What software versions is everyone on? Is it still 6.0.1 or has it jumped to Nougat (i know vodafone probably wont have made the jump yet)

    On Three here, Android 6.0.1.

    I'm with Meteor, I assume we're miles behind? :(

Yep, the morons haven't done an update since August if you check the firmwares on Sammobile.com. And they have no idea when they will do an update. Same for Eir. Three and Vodafone are ahead of them by miles.

However, what I did was got my S7 unlocked (sim-unlock.net), installed Odin on my PC and flashed the latest BTU firmware. I now get updates quicker directly from Samsung UK without voiding warranty. Still not on Nougat but security patch is from December. Can always flash back the Meteor firmware if they ever get their act together.

My battery also went absolutely gaga today....phone was dead by 15:00, when usually it was last all day.

I looked at the battery usage, and indeed Facebook and Messenger were taking a lot of power, despite not being used at all during the day.

    Is this the reason?

I'm with Eir, so don't think I got any of the new software updates that people are talking about.

Identical for myself and my wife with our Xperia phones today, massive and unusual battery drain. I have Gsam battery monitor with the rooted access and its reporting Facebook and Messenger as the culprits. Remarkable that Facebook could essentially flip a switch at their end and kill every Android phone out there! It's like cyber terrorism!

Same here, messenger and Facebook are my top two battery drain yesterday where it usually screen or Android services. I don't think I even used messenger yesterday! Uninstalled both for now.

I installed the 350mb update this morning (Vodafone). I'll let you know if I spot any battery issues.

Seems OK for me. Facebook and Messenger are about 10% each which is pretty normal (I use both). Android System is highest at 21%.

Messenger wasn't opened once by me yesterday but usage was up at 13%. I did use Facebook a bit and that was 11%

It's quite possible for a userland app to cause system CPU/battery usage to rise due to abuse of some API or other because of a bug.

Deleted FB messenger and disabled Facebook (cannot delete it which pissed me off) yesterday so interested to see today.

There must be something up with the handset or the way you are using it, because my battery life is great (allbeit I am the edge). At the end of the battery, go into settings, then battery and take a screenshot of where it is all going.

I'm the same regarding battery life on the Edge. The battery life is great on the edge.
I read somewhere that FB app uses approx 20% of a smartphone battery in a day.

some quick tips here that will help save battery power. It may reduce the capabilities of the phone, but a lot of them are only gimmicky things that are nice to have but not necessarily essential usage.

Facebook and Messenger for me. That's it I'm done with both on my phone, they could add 10% more battery and I still won't put them back on.

If you’ve been experiencing drastic battery drain issues with the Facebook or Messenger apps recently, then you’re advised to restart them.

Posts regarding the battery problem began hitting online message boards yesterday, with users claiming that the Facebook apps had suddenly started consuming uncharacteristically high levels of battery life.

It appears that these complaints weren’t unfounded, as Facebook’s Vice President of Messaging Products, David Marcus, later acknowledged the issue on Twitter.

Mr Marcus apologised for the problem and stated that it was an isolated incident that has now been fixed.

Got an S7 Edge for Christmas. When ever I'm using the phone one handed, my palm lies against the curved bit of the screen and it's picking that up as an input for the keyboard or moving the page etc. Any way to stop that?

For the first 6 months I used no case, and I mastered not touching it, but it was pain when I passed it to anyone else to look at a photo or whatever they couldn't handle it.

I also smashed two screens, because they are very fragile. So now I have a new one, and it is in a case. It's much easier to hold.

I can't believe the difference removing messenger and disabling facebook has made.

I was down to 30% by around 2pm yesterday.

With similar use I'm on 64% today and it's half four.

    Wtf
