won't have my phone back until at least 5 working days from the 28th as per three's repair service.. and no loan phone provided (well they kind of tried but that's a whole other story)

I like the spigen rugged armour on my s7. Good for scratch protection. The tough armor is better for drop protection. I find all screen protectors suck. No scratches yet.

Anyone get an OTA update this morning. On BTU firmware which went up on Samobile on 23rd. Hard to believe Meteor are around 6 updates behind.

Sorry if this has been asked, but I need to casefiy my S7 Edge (Because I have smashed the screen on two trying to survive without cases).

Will things like wireless charging and Android pay work through a case? What cases suit the edge?

Wireless charging does work through cases, though depends on the thickness of the case. Ive got a normal s7 and use wireless charging through a case and it works fine.

Yep, got one for Christmas and it works through the case I have. Though the case is pretty thin

I am using a Samsung fast charge through my Spigen Tough Armor case on my S7 and works perfectly.

What's this BTU firmware everybody's talking about? Is it better than the network provider firmware?

    Get your S7 unlocked (sim-unlock.net)
Setup an account on sammobile.net and download the BTU firmware
Install Odin on your PC and flash the firmware

Pretty easy to do and you will get updates faster than the Irish networks. meteor are almost 6 months behind. three and vf more up to date but still not as fast as getting updates directly from samsung.

Does that remove three branding from boot?

Yep, it removes the branding, and 3 bloatware though there is a standard set of apps/bloatware that comes with the btu firmware you can't remove, only disable. i.e word, excel, one note, one drive and facebook spring to mind. It seems they come with all samsung firmwares regardless of network. But at least no crap 3 or VF rubbish.

By flashing this through Odin does it wipe your phone clean and then have to reload all stuff that I need.

Interesting stuff. So the BTU folks would get the Nougat update first too?

What does BTU stand for anyway?

Also, has anybody used Smart switch for swapping firmwares like this? I mean does it work if you use Odin to install new firmware?

By the way, unrelated to upgrading firmware, I found a great system wide adblock that uses Samsung's Knox system to block ads and trackers.

It's similar to Disconnect Pro, but it's free. I've been using it a few days now and it does block ads everywhere.

Only problem is it doesn't play nice with Google play music, so it's not recommended if you use that app.

Anyway the adblock is called Adhell and it's on the play store.

yeah adhell is great. it's not like the other crap ones that use a VPN, it's an actual ad blocker.

firefox + ublock origin too if you find any are sneaking through.

another nice trick is I have installed youtube-dl from within termux so can download youtube videos.. and rte player videos etc.. it's very handy. You can play the videos then in a decent player like VLC. No ads either once you download from the rte player.

Just installed the BTU firmware after reading the previous posts here. Working great, and that stupid blindingly white Three boot screen is gone.

I used Samsung Switch with my laptop to save all my apps & pics. I thought it would save app data but it didn't. For example I had to register with whatsapp and viber again, and Relay for Reddit was totally back to default. Had to login again.

So im after flashing the BTU firmware myself and just as a FYI for anyone else yet to do it, if you have a pin lock on the phone the process wont factory reset the phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

Not just a pin lock but a pin on startup

How much of a chance of completely bricking is there with that Odin thing? Very expensive phone to be chancing anything.

Just installed it there and restarted the phone like it said to in the Play Store description but still getting pop ups on ExtraTorrent.

Anyone else find their Always On Display keeps displaying the title of the last audio listened to long after you've stopped listening and closed whatever app you were using, (Spotify, music player etc)? Mines been doing it a lot lately. Mine is currently still showing a song I listened to 7 hours ago! A minor issue but irritating all the same.

not gonna fix your problem but it doesn't happen with vanilla music player, great player btw!

Note this video is for flashing STOCK. For BTU only difference is you select the CSC file and not HOME CSC. Also good idea to flush cache partition to make sure the correct CSC is applied. I have gone BTU (did factory reset as wanted fresh phone) and got an OTA update about a week ago even though it is a Meteor phone. So its working as expected and warranty is not void as official Samsung firmware. I could flash back to 3, VF, or Meteor if I so chose also.
