Jarlath is an awful bootlicker though - one of the main reasons I originally stopped listening to him back in the day.

Maybe it's not intentional but I always think he sounds like he's smarming all over his guests.Yuck.

    I get this as well.

Haven't listened to today's pods yet, but christ, Monday's were tough going. The amount of discussion on Pep Guardiola's attitude to the media and armchair psychiatry is really grinding on my last nerve. TALK ABOUT THE FOOTBALL FFS!

I'd probably skip today's football podcast then if I were you :)

Bit harsh on Jarlath. I dont think it sounded like he never heard of the Fair View, not sure where you picked up that feeling.

The what does he think of Brendan rogers and Steve Staunton bits didn't really go anywhere. I thought he should have asked him about Jose Mourinho as Ken and the rest of the SC lads seemed to have made up their mind that they absolutely hate him.

I also would have paid money for him to be asked does he ever envisage ever been back on Newstalk for a Sunday paper review or are those bridges totally burnt?

The Rogers and Staunton mightn't have gone anywhere but I did like to hear what they thought of Staunton as they've used his audio clip for so long now.

Overall I'm not sure what to think of the podcast as it did seem, certainly at the start, that Ken had no real interest in answering the questions.

Maybe he won't be so harsh on any footballers who do the same from now on :D

Ken in fairness was probably pretty bemused as to why he was being interviewed at all. I can actually hear Ken rambling on about why the likes of "insert generic irish celeb" who doesn't/has never lived abroad should never be the subject of this show.

Ken being on Irishman abroad is probably the equivalent of 10 year old Ken having to sit through a class in school not being allowed to tell his teacher that the spelling was wrong.

I listened to the sports show to listen to the Ronda Rousey part. They didn't talk Rousey, they just rambled on about some right wing journalist they didn't like. There should be a disclaimer.

Very interesting to hear of the way Giles treated Ken/Mark back in the Newstalk days. Didn't think he was such a dick, but there you go...

Haven't enjoyed one of the SC podcasts as much as this weeks non-football one for a good while.

Feel a bit of a d*ck for saying this, cos I love McDevitt, but Horgan is fantastic when he stands in.

As I've said before, better than any of the current OTB first team.

Fell a bit behind and only heard Monday's show tonight, really enjoyed the chat with the fella who will try to sail around the World, given the tales Ken was telling of fella's who tryed that losing their minds it's a brave move.

Loved Ken's quote in Thursday's Football show "Genius is the art of avoiding boredom"

+1 That was really enjoyable....And I'm one of the few here that still enjoys OTB.

Who would your money be on in a scrap between Johnny Giles and Ken?

Ken has youth on his side, but Giles was a famously tough customer back in the day.

Gilesy would probably deliver the coup de grace before Ken had been given the chance to make an allusion about how John was reminiscent of Jake LaMotta towards the end of Raging Bull.

    +1 on this

    Most interesting thing in ages.

The whole Pep G on the football show is pure tripe.

Murph is grating on me more and more every single episode, his smarmy, smug attitude and along with all the in jokes is making me skip episodes more and more where once I listened to every single episode no matter what.

I can deal with Murph and his schtick in general, but when he's left on his own with Ken, whenever Owen isn't about, he can't help himself from being ultra smartarsey, both of them have to out-do each other with the zingers.

Himself and US murph are the weakest things about the whole SC pods imo. Murph needs someone to reign him in... To me he's just an unlikable kind of guy.

The thing that bothers me about Murph is his inability to ask a question. He just can't seem to make a point in one sentence without stretching it out into a 5-6 sentence monologue that even then doesn't seem to contain a question at the end of it. And I say that as a big fan of both him and SC, but nonetheless it does start to grate once you notice it.

I love murph but agree with the roundabout way in which he makes points, if only he were more cogent :)

I am such a big fan of SC that it is actually a big part of my life listening to it on the commute to/from work.

BUT - I feel they are very lazy when it comes to anything political. They just fall back on to the cozy liberal consensus so beloved of the Irish media. From the sneering attitudes towards Brexit and Trump voters, to the skewed ad hominem discussion of the Ronda Rousey critic, to Ken talking to Emmanuel Petit about how the French authorities were afraid of "some vague threat" prior to the Euro2016 tournament (hint: it's not a vague threat, it was the very specific and very real threat of Islamic terrorism), to the insinuation that 99% of Aussie Rules fans are rabid racist bigots, they never ever attempt to puncture the bubble and try to understand things from any perspective other than the usual left wing viewpoint.

The cosy liberal consensus... What exactly is that?

To be honest, it sounds like you're a big fan of SC, except for pretty much everything that makes the lads themselves. If you want a podcast that affirms your right-wing political opinions, you've absolutely come to the wrong shop.

For me, US Murph's contributions have been going down and down in quality. His pieces now feel more like "Ah, we'll keep this old throwback segment 'cos 'member the good old days?"

Seriously, it's a bit like the Pep stuff on the football show, it just feels like whenever he's on the show lately they spend 10 or 15 minutes talking to him and at the end, I don't feel like I've gained anything from listening to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,777 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

The Mike Riley segment was quite simply the worst bit I've heard on either of the SC podcasts in a long time. It was atrocious.

But Mark Horgan's sports pod was immense.

Actually I tune in for the sport and humour and am not looking to affirm any political opinions. However, it would be nice if they would show a bit of balance and at least make an honest effort to see the other side of the debate.

The same consensus that refuses to acknowledge any of the valid reasons why people voted for Brexit, and instead lazily puts it down to "xenophobia".

They've made fairly plain why they think that, for instance, Trump is an utter lunatic or Brexit is disastrously stupid and self-destructive. They're under no obligation to indulge the wrong-headed, no more that anyone else is under an obligation to indulge them by listening to their podcast.

I always suspect when people come out with stuff like "the cozy liberal consensus" their only real concern is that the media is not been cozy in their direction. I think the majority people in the country wish brexit hadn't happened and also wish Trump hadn't. So it's hardly a surprise if the media reflect this. I don't think the lads are falling back on anything, they're just expressing their opinions. Is it really such a hardship to listen to points of views which differ from yours?
