A "large" section of the audience can't tolerate contrary opinions, maybe need safe spaces or trigger warnings built into the pod? Maybe they could just get over themselves.

You do not understand what I am saying. If you have a product and you continuesly to make it a niche product, it won't last very long.

On Soundcloud alone most of their podcasts get over 30,000 listens, some of them over 40, would that count as niche?

Anyway, I doubt a handful of upset Trump supporters turning off will be the death of their podcasts.

    Richie's presenting the non-football show?

This is either going to be great, or terrible... Either way, a bit of a weird surprise. :P

I really enjoyed it, he couldn't break Luke!

Great interview with Luke Fitzgerald by Richie, got a bit too deep at some stages but very enjoyable

Thought Richie did a great job on the interview with Luke.

Richie's interview with Luke was grand but Richie didn't seem to grasp that Luke had already reached close to the pinnacle of his career (while Richie hadn't at all) and was a good 4 years older than Richie by the time he had to retire.

The question i would have liked to ask Luke which would maybe not have been received well was when he went on SC live on RTE he made a strange comment about having to be "persuaded" to go to Santry sports clinic when he was injured. Made me think he may not have shown enough focus on his rehab/recovery.

If they are going to discuss politics at least have an alternative view for some debate and humour!

Is there any escapism? RTE Radio 1, 2 FM, Today FM, RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3, the same rhetoric.

I remember the old show from Newstalk when it was a Dublin station and from my frequent prize winnings I was in the minority of listeners.

I don't know where it's coming from but over the last couple of years there is a certain bias in the show and it is rarely questioned unless on their terms.

At least McDevitt made an attempt to bring some balance to the show.

Aprepos Payet podcast today, if McDevitt/Early get a better offer, I think the whole show will fall apart.

Richie's interview with Luke Fitzgerald could have been better. Richie wasn't getting the point that Fitzgeralds has had so many injuries that he's had time to get his head around retiring. He's also achieved a fair bit which probably makes it easier but Ritchie kept asking the same questions!

As for the overall show - its still class and better than any competition hands down. Early is the star but the lads all have their roles. Murph IS actually funny. McDevitt's a great host and interviewer. Simon Hick is excellent on rugby and Young Horgan's music/sound edits are class. When he subs he's quality too.

I know this has been raised on this thread before but my only worry is how they can keep it going financially. They've lost Rabo as a sponsor. No sign of them on the TV this winter and I presume these things have a life cycle. Just hope this is a longer life cycle than other shows. The loss of my imaginary friends would be too much to take.

Given the way they hawked their annual, I'd say they are hardly flush. They would be better off doing their own thing individually. Early and mcdevitt have obvious talent and just need the right vehicle. Murph's level is local radio. As for the other 2, god knows what they do. Those musical inserts are a self indulgent joke at this stage.

    I didn't.
I think Ritchie is painful to listen to and regularly disappears up his own arse. He fancies himself as a bit of a Sigmund Freud. He works in the pseudo psychology area.Which of course he was careful to mention.
The lads seem to idolise him a bit which is kind of sad.

All of them have their own newspaper column's and Horgan and Hick should probably get more air time, thy are both very good. I enjoy the muscical interludes-mostly. You do realise the show has to be produced and the work that goes in to making that happen?
If Murph is local radio; what does that make the likes of Dessie and the boys and girls in Montrose?

I'm surprised about the amount of negativity that crops up on this thread - such a good show.

I'd say they will get another sponsor eventually given the size of the listenership - if not I think they should put out the feelers for some donations/crowd funding like the graham hunter podcast did before they just jack it in - I've mentioned on this thread before that I think enough people would be willing to pay for it.

I'd pay money to make sure I never have to hear from him again.

They've conveniently given him intro music on OTB - the second i hear the first twang of Paul Weller's guitar I switch off :pac:

You'd think he'd still be hiding in a cave given how he humiliated himself so completely with his years-long insistence that Pep was going to Man Utd.

    God, I can't stand that talking slurry-spreader.

Glad someone highlighted this. We're all entitled to our opinions, and fair criticism is fine, but a lot of stuff posted on here seems a bit petty. I know that sports broadcasting is a niche area in Ireland, but Second Captains is, by some stretch, the best, overall sports show out there. OTB, Game On, The GAA Hour, none match up to Second Captains IMO. Some posters have alluded to apparent financial difficulties...."you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone" springs to mind.

Agreed. The state of Irish radio broadcasting is dire. Second Captains is a diamond in the rough!

Newstalk sport is far far away from dire; best station for sports out there in the UK or Ireland for me. Debatable whether it is superior to second captains. For me it is but not for everyone.

    RTE is fairly dire alright.

For the amount of coverage they give it - yes. For the hosts - no.

And its not even close in comparison to SC.

I think Joe is quite good. Ger is fine.

For me if I'm looking to laugh & be entertained I'll listen to SC, if I'm looking for insight into what is actually happening I'll listen to OTB. I personally value getting real insight above entertainment.

And finally Ken's over-reliance on psycho-analysis of everything managers say like it's the most significant thing in the sport is grating.

Interesting piece on Monday about that girl with epilepsy who has run the Dublin marathon (twice I think?). I think this is where SC shines, the podcast format reduces the need to be overly reliant on discussing the latest scores/etc, and I hope they delve into other sporting stories like this going forward. Whenever they go outside the norm they do it so well (a story about a gay boxer from the 1950s (I think) who killed a man in the ring comes to mind).

Who on OTB are you getting that insight from? The best thing they have going for them is Kilbane, from the point of view he's not long out of the game and had good insight into clubs/players he was involved with. And he seems to use his contacts to get them interviews.

The presenters themselves don't offer any real insight themselves. Joe is the most bland football fan going.

Agreed. T'would be nice if they did an extra pod a week dedicated to niche stuff. Then you'd have one for GAA/Rugby/the big story of the week, one for soccer and then a random one highlighting something or someone you may not have heard of. Like, they could have done a good piece on TNS' run to breaking Ajax record or something, some more in depth interviews rather than having them on the main show, etc.

Kilbane, Andrews, Cunningham and Dan McDonnell. Any of those 4 are able to offer a far greater insight than Richie Sadier IMO.

This would be great and I think giving the other guys a chance to host the extra show would be brilliant Mark and Simon are great on air. I wouldn't want Eoin replaced so the extra show would work well.
