Andrew Ridgeley has done alright in life, been in Wham! without having to do much then lived happily with one of Bananarama ever since and never had to work again.

    My fave Wham! song.

Edit: Get Ridgeley off the feckin bass!

This a great tune too. I remember there being sadness around this cos everyone knew the end was nigh.

I think BBC Four have dropped the previously announced George Michael Documentary tonight, some sort of legal or compliance issues. Hopefully it will appear in due course.

Shame, It's tough to get tribute programming scheduled at short notice but they should have checked the details before they announced it.

Yeah it's a shame hopefully we will get a proper retrospective documentary on George's life and career! Still great to see those classic TOTP performances!

Not sure if I'm allowed to post this so please delete Skid if not, I think this was the documentary that was going to be on tonight.

Nice one Gizmo, Youtube links are OK on Boards so all good (I regularly post them anyway, and I've never been told off).

Can't help but feel Mark Radcliffe was never a Wham! fan.

It's hard to know if he was a fan of anyone.

    Bob Monkhouse: The Last Stand.
Very intelligent comic. One of the great elder funnymen.
    Anyone watching.

Watch the documentary on YouTube last night was made around 2005 around the release of Patience and it was excellent, one moment I found kind of sad was he visits the house where he grew up with his friend and he joked that they will put a plaque up on it if he dies. Worth a watch I hope BBC4 clear the rights to show it as I would like to see it again in HD.

He is down as co-writer on some of the Wham tracks like Club Tropicana and Wham Rap and Careless Whisper so a lot more useful then Baz

He co-wrote a few songs (check out his twitter from the past week - he is credited on 'Careless Whisper').

I also read somewhere that George was shy at first when it came to stage performance, so he needed 'Son Of Albert' as support.

Someone told me during the week that they'd read that George Michael gave Andrew Ridgely a writing credit on Careless Whisper after it had been released to make sure that Ridgely would always have some decent money coming in.

yeah I think his writing contributions were minimal, regardless of the credits.

To be fair, if you have ever listened to any of his radio shows or watched any of his tv shows, you would know that he is a huge fan of numerous artists across all genres of music. The man knows his stuff and he's definitely a big music fan. On a "local" note, he's given a lot of airplay and airtime to Irish artists over the years (and still does) which has given them huge exposure which is hard to get in the UK market at times. He's actually someone I'd love to go for a pint with sometime, I imagine the stories he could tell would be brilliant... :D

Sad bit of news this evening. The death was announced of Therese MacGowan, mother of Shane. I knew Therese for more than thirty years. From the early 90s I accompanied her to most of Shane's Irish shows with The Pogues or The Popes.

An absolute lady and a pleasure to be with.
    RIP

I was at the recording of this

Very sad and tough given the circumstances, hope the happy memories of your time with her will help today...

Very sad to hear about Shane's mother, I know how close they were. Devastating news for any family to start the new year with, I hope that they will all be ok.

TG4 showed a repeat of an old No Disco documentary on Planxty from 2003 last night.

I really enjoyed it, it doesn't seem to be on the TG4 Player but someone uploaded it to Youtube today. Well worth a look even if you're not a huge fan.

No Disco was a great show back in the day (It usually covered more Indy and contemporary type music). It turns out Donal Dineen (The original presenter) has just launched an online sequel series 'This ain't no disco', might be worth a look (thanks to 'Guitar Town' for posting about it on After Hours last night http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=102135961&postcount=2)

Absolute must-see Bowie documentary this Saturday, the day before what would have been his 70th. birthday.

'The Last Five Years' BBC Two at 9pm

Haven't come onto this thread in absolutely ages - and as it happens, when I do, I'm watching the "No Disco" Planxty programme! Real blast from the past stuff. Interesting spat (at a remove, they were both very polite!) between Christy and Phil Coulter in the middle of it.

I knew that "Planxty" was a bit of a moveable feast at the best of times, but had no idea there were so many incarnations over the years!

Liam O'Flynn is still one of my absolutely, all-time, mega-favourite musicians EVER.

Thanks for the tip-off re the Bowie programme on Saturday - will set that to record for sure!

Happy New Year to all you BBC4/music heads!

Donal Dineen and the original No Disco alerted me to the existence of the Trashcan Sinatras, for which I will be eternally grateful. Remember seeing the video for Obscurity Knocks on the programme one Saturday morning and going out and buying the debut album Cake that same afternoon.

    Thanks lads.

BandMember. Yes. They were very close. She would do anything for him. And vice versa (kinda :D ). I'm meeting him the morning before the funeral for the first time in 8 months. Pity it's not a happier occasion.

Well, hope he know the amount of goodwill from fans for him.... Shocking to see a tabloid putting him on the cover at Frank Murray's funeral, poor guy should be left alone with the week he had.

F*cking vultures. . The man had pneumonia twice last year and has ongoing hip problems. I suppose the c*nts, and more, will be all over Therese's funeral as well. All in "The public interest" of course.

I still have that No Disco Planxty documentary somewhere in a press, with loads of other old music gems. Just never find the time to convert them. That documentary was pretty much responsible for their 2004 reformation (I was at one of the Vicar Street gigs, one of my all time favourite ones. I've seen Andy Irvine solo too) and is definitely worth a watch, even for those with only a passing interest in their music. It also confirmed what everyone always knew: Phil Coulter is an absolute b****x!!

Thanks for the heads up on the current No Disco show. Something like is desperately missed from the national airwaves, it's a disgrace that the only music show (and I feel sick even describing it like that) on the airwaves is rubbish like The X Factor. It's no wonder that the likes of Phantom/TXFM can't get an audience that so many Irish bands struggle to find an audience anymore (unless they are bland inoffensive muck like The Coronas *cough* leg up *cough* or The Script).

Good spot on the Bowie doc, will definitely be watching that. I've a feeling that there will be some interesting new information/material in it. There's been a series of Bowie radio docs on BBC 6 Music all last week and this week, they are available to listen back to on the site for 30 days, if anyone is interested.

As for certain publications who published those photos of Shane, they should be ashamed of themselves. Absolute parasite scum who have made a joke of "journalist ethics". It was great to see a complete backlash from the public against them and, even though it is the last thing on his mind at the moment, I hope that, in time, Shane realises how much the Irish people still love him, and always will. Sligojoe, I hope you will convey a similar message to his family/friends, and I hope that your meeting (albeit in tragic circumstances) goes well. As the album title says, Peace and Love. Rant over.
