Absolute must-see Bowie documentary this Saturday, the day before what would have been his 70th. birthday.

'The Last Five Years' BBC Two at 9pm

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b088ktm6

Yeah, that's the stand out programme of the weekend (and possibly the year), not to be missed. Elsewhere if it's 2017 then it must be 1983 on BBC Four. They begin with the now traditional documentary about the new year and continue with the familiar 'compilation of performances from the new TOTP year mostly taken from the episodes we can't show in full because of Yewtree', although I think they might have changed the title ...

    Friday
9pm & 12.30am Top Of The Pops - The Story of 1983 New!
Contributors including Bonnie Tyler, Tracie Young, Marilyn and members of New Order, Kajagoogoo, Haysi Fantayzee, Spandau Ballet, the Smiths, Flying Pickets and Thompson Twins reflect on an era when the mood in the charts was escapism and musical reinvention. It was a difficult time for the Top of the Pops itself, as the rise of the video started to threaten its unique appeal - getting the day's top artists into the studio. This forced producer Michael Hurll to experiment with presenters and features - including dispensing with dance troupe Zoo

    10pm & 1.30am Top Of The Pops 1983 - Big Hits New!
A compilation of some of the biggest hits of the year, celebrating the genres of soul, reggae, jazz, new wave and pop. Wham!, KC and the Sunshine Band, the Police, Culture Club, Siouxsie and the Banshees, UB40, Duran Duran, the Beat and Bananarama feature, alongside Elton John, Bonnie Tyler and Malcolm McLaren's Double Dutch

11pm & 2.30am Biggest Band Break Ups and Make Ups
Mark Radcliffe looks at the highs and lows of life in the music industry. He focuses on the creative tension that produces great material, as well as the pressures that comes with success and fame that can pull groups apart. The presenter looks at the most common reasons for splitting up, alongside the secrets of those that manage to stay together

    Saturday
9pm David Bowie - The Last Five Years (BBC2) New!
A portrait of David Bowie, told by the people who knew him best - his friends and artistic collaborators. It also takes a detailed look at his last albums The Next Day and Blackstar, and his play Lazarus. Through the prism of this last work, the film shows how, in his final five years, Bowie not only began producing music again but returned to the core and defining themes of his career. Among the contributors are Tony Visconti, Gail Ann Dorsey, Toni Basil and Michael C Hall

10.30pm Film: The Man Who Fell To Earth (BBC2)

11.50pm & 2.55am An Evening With Sammy Davis Junior
A compilation of the singer, actor and dancer's performances for the BBC, filmed in the 1960s, featuring classic songs including My Funny Valentine and Once in a Lifetime. The entertainer demonstrates his impersonations of well-known stars of the era, with cameras capturing him also being quick on the draw with a pistol

12.50am Sammy David Junior: The Kid in The Middle
Documentary charting the rise and fall of dancer, singer and actor Sammy Davis Jr, who made his debut at the age of five and was a key member of the Rat Pack. The entertainer overcame racial prejudice and became known as a civil rights campaigner, marching alongside Martin Luther King in the 1960s, but remains something of an enigma - a workaholic and spendaholic who put his career before his family and died leaving them millions of dollars in debt. Featuring contributions by family and friends including Paul Anka, Engelbert Humperdinck, the Rev Jesse Jackson and Ben Vereen. Narrated by Lynne Seymour

1.50am Sings The Great American Songbook
A compilation of archive performances of hits composed by American songwriters including Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen. Featuring music by Shirley Bassey, Bryan Ferry, Captain Sensible, Jamie Cullum and Florence and the Machine

Not much on Sky Arts, they are still in repeat mode but there is another chance to see the Sunset Strip documentary (Sunday, 11.15pm). Slash and Alice Cooper among the contributors https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sunset_strip_2012/

Elsewhere, Movie Soundtrack on the Television award might go to Goodfellas (TG4, Saturday 10.05pm)

Ah, I had that there because for some reason I thought Kelly's Heroes was on, but it was actually the Dirty Dozen (Sunday, Dave, 4pm). Forgot to delete it, ah well :o. Great tune.

Ah, it'll be grand - they have lots of good stuff, you might go the odd week where there isn't much on but they have a terrific archive that they repeat regularly.

They do have a bit of a fetish for that weird Rieu lad, though, They game him his own channel once (Sky Arts Rieu)

Never knew The Police appeared on TOTP to perform 'Every Breath You Take' - they were by far and away the biggest band in the world at that point.

This whole quiz is hard! I've only known about three answers so far!!

Don't think I ever came across this back in the day..... It's a great trip down memory lane!

Just watched the TOTP 1983 documentary - always good to see Twisted Sister :D

That idea of sending presenters to different parts of the world to get a flavour of various music scenes was a bit bizarre - especially as this was at the height of the so-called 'Second British Invasion' - we rule (sorry, Clan-nad)! :D

Difficult NOT to strut to 'Fame' - effortlessly cool

Doesn't seem to be just about the last five years, contrary to what the title says.

Great to hear from the musicians that worked with him, rather than the usual rentaquote talking heads.

Did Neil Sedaka ever work with Bowie? :pac: :D

Keep that hidden in the vaults, Mr. Visconti.
