TOTP is being shown because it's cheap - if they have to re-edit half the episodes it would no longer be cheap, also the episodes would be a mess and all different lengths.

Well, nearly time to stick your tapes in to record some of the coming attractions over the Christmas period, here are few of the picks until next Thursday, I'll do the same for the following week at some stage after things have died down a bit. Plenty of TOTP and a revival of Mike Read's Pop Quiz to be found in there, among others.

Thanks to one and all who have joined in at any stage over the last year, it's a bit of fun and there can't be many threads which have so many posts with so few arguments. Happy Christmas, and here's Kenny to introduce the Thin Sex Lizzy Pistols

The 50th consecutive Christmas Day outing for TOTP. Yes, the fiftieth.  :D

To think that the last time Pops didn't air on 25 December, we were still dealing with shillings and pence, there was still no colour TV, and man hadn't yet landed on the moon. And, of course, England were rather good at football... :D

    World-Cup-Final-1966.jpg

It's also the 13th consecutive year that Fearne and Reggie are the hosts. This despite the fact that Fearne's now on Radio 2. :D

And as in the previous 12, expect them to say what an amazing year this was for music. They'll be sort of right this time... :(:(:(

Finally, it's the third consecutive year that the Christmas and New Year shows have been made at Elstree Film Studios. Back in September, I talked about the '91 revamp - which, as well as involving the must-sing-live rule and unknown presenters, also involved Pops taking up residence at the BBC's own Elstree Studios, which are almost right across the road from the film studios. :D

It was there for nearly ten years - including through its last truly great days under Ric Blaxill in '94 and '95 - before the expansion of EastEnders to four nights a week in 2001 (Albert Square being located at Elstree, of course) prompted a return to BBC Television Centre. While the finishing touches were being put to the Star Bar - which was rubbish, as the video below demonstrates - there was a temporary stay at the nearby Riverside Studios in Hammersmith.

After the weekly show ended in 2006, the Christmas and New Year shows continued to be made at TVC (with the exception of the 2007 Christmas show, which was made at Riverside) until its controversial closure for redevelopment in 2013. That year's shows were made at Riverside, before it too closed for redevelopment - hence the return to Borehamwood in 2014. :D

While at Elstree Film Studios, Fearne and Reggie have said "What an amazing year this was for music!" on Stage 9 - the same stage on which Chris Tarrant said some even more memorable things while hosting one of the biggest game shows of all time... :D

    http://www.hotpress.com/Frank-Murray/news/Pogues-Manager-and-Thin-Lizzy-Man-Frank-Murray-Dies/19408124.html

Not sure if this is the right pace for this but here goes anyway.

The death was announced today of Frank Murray. Thin Lizzy tour manager and Pogues Manager. He was responsible for bringing Terry Woods and the late Philip Chevron to the Pogues. I met him several times at Pogues reunion gigs in Dublin when he was no longer manager. Always a lovely bloke to have a chat with.

    RIP

    I had a CX 500 around 1990. The most troublesome machine I ever owned. I say that as a huge fan of 70s to early 80s Hondas. I've owned several from a C50 to a CB-X 1050.

I think Frank started with the Pogues around 85. Maybe 84.

I found this in a quick search.
The Pogues met Frank Murray, their future manager, on their 1984 tour supporting Elvis Costello. Murray, who'd been a tour manager with Thin Lizzy, the ..

I'm fairly sure I remember watching this show first around and being very upset when Musical Youth didn't appear.

But they were on Blue Peter pretty much every week around this time, so that was good.
