Amazing how despite all their privilege white men in Ireland die substantially younger than white women, work typically much longer hours and much later into their life and commit suicide in far higher numbers. Might avail of the aul sex change if it gets me an extra decade or so.

That's not the same thing, at all. It's a privileged position in terms of your place in society. That doesn't mean all straight white men have it easy. The fact you work longer hours and later in life is of your own doing. Historically men are the ones who go to work and pay the bills, women stay home and raise the kids. Given we've all bought into the modern Ireland of two cars, big house, several sun holidays a year etc. I'd expect those figures to balance out in the next few decades.

I truly hope you can see the startling hypocrisy in this post.

I don't. You'll have to point it out to me.

I said "white male" in relation to how it's a privileged position to be in. To say you can't know what it's like to be discriminated against because you're a man would be inaccurate. As IBF pointed out men are often discriminated against but it's never for just being a man, it's for being a gay man, or a black man, or a Muslim man etc.

    You're not answering my question.

Traditionally, Ireland hasn't institutionalised racism against PoC and seeing that 97% of the population is white it would hard to classify it as a 'privilege'. Plenty of casual racism mind and we could increase support to non-EU migrants, but we've never really institutionalised anything like the US.

With that in mind, answer my question:

When you say 'White Man' why does race come into in the context of Ireland for the reasons I outlined above?

Clearly I don't understand what you're asking then. I've done my best to explain my use of the term in this conversation and in the wider sense. If it's not the answer you're looking for there's nothing more I can do.

I mean, I don't know how I can make a question simpler than:

When you say 'White Man' why does race come into it in the context of Ireland for the reasons I outlined above?

    So I don't think it's my fault you don't or won't understand.

Perhaps ideologies you subscribe to require further examination.

Do you drink....add salt to your food....drink diet cola...any of these and many more would mean that nobody would ever win a monetary award again

I've already explained why I used the term in this conversation. My answer clearly isn't the one you want it to be.

Definitely wouldn't have a hope if you willingly played rugby!

No, it's because you're not making sense.

You brought up race, I questioned it and explained why being 'white' in Ireland isn't a privilege and then you changed tact to gender and attempted to equate it to race in some manner.

None of these things are the same as smoking. Except drinking alcohol at an unhealthy level. Bottom line is most of these people shouldn't be getting pay outs anyway. Maybe this one can keep her pay out to cover her medical costs when she's got emphysema or throat cancer, save the state a few grand.

I explained why I brought up race in the conversation I was having. You weren't happy with that answer. Nothing more I can do.

And I explained why it was pure nonsense.

I see this is going in circles so I'll just leave it there.

If you played any sport and were prevented from doing so by an accident that was someone else's fault then it would probably stand to your case.

On what ground exactly do you think someone who smokes or drinks should not be awarded compensation due to an accident? Is it not the fact they are willingly engaging in unhealthy practices?

She slipped on some poo and what? Got a bruise? So she thinks she's entitled to a pay out. Meanwhile she is doing actual damage to her own health by choice. Why should a company or individual have to shell out for injuries caused to someone who is injuring themselves on an ongoing basis?

If you're trapped under a wall that collapsed because a builder did a half arsed job and nobody bothered to check it then sure, the fact you smoke is irrelevant. If you slip on some pigeon poo in what is essentially an outdoor work space, it's not the same thing.

I feel like I could say the sky is blue and someone would disagree with me today. Best to take a break.

There are ways of writing posts that are constructive, and then there are the above. Please refrain from being so dismissive in your posts - telling people their view is pure nonsense is not constructive and is inflammatory.

Sooooo.....episode 5 of peaky blinders last night.

God it's good. The accents are all over the place but Cillian Murphy has some screen presence. The scenes with "nidge" were great (Tom V L).

Cinematography is excellent. All in all it's a thumbs up here.

It's a great show. Sam Neil's accent is terrible but other than that it's fantastic.

Never got into Peaky Blinders, watched first 5 episodes of Season 1 and found myself bored
I get the appeal but not for me

The next show I'm look forward to is season 3 of Better Call Saul, should be out end of February :)

First two seasons of Peaky Blinders were fantastic. The third season really started to struggle and went off the rails. I gave up after a few episodes.
