He's been letting himself down more and more lately. Having his own show has did what I didn't think was possible and made the ego bigger.

Did he fall out with the OTB team or the management, do we know?

McCarron comes across as such a dislikable character, literally at every turn he is blaming someone else. His parents for the gambling, the girl for the tinder episode, the bouncer in temple bar. He sees himself as a victim.

For those that didn't hear the OTB interview here are the violent incidences in his own book:
    - Punching Damien Barton
    - Choking out a derry player
    - Common assault conviction on a traffic warden
    - One punch KO of a guy outside a chipper
    - Breaking a guys jaw one christmas in Enniskillen
    - Punched a guy in Athy who tweeted he was gay
    - Alleged DUI and resisting arrest - thrown out
    - Sending off in 2009
    - Lituanian forklift driver
    - Omagh niteclub incident
    - Wants to fight with his neighbour while he is breaking into his house

When Ger Gilroy asked him about the 15yo he started talking about if you've never been to the edge of taking your own life you'll never know what its like, as Gilroy said what has that to do with having sex with a 15yo?

This is my view of McCarron purely (as opposed to depression and suicide) but I actually think he's full of **** around that too. The interview with Wooly talks about how he thought about throwing himself in front of a train and was going to do it. His brother was ringing him and ringing him and he says he doesn't know why but he eventually answered the phone.
We all hear about cries for help, I had a cousin who tried it several times before eventually going too far. This isn't even a cry for help, its an attention seeker looking for pity. I call bull****.

And as for claiming gambling is a disease, just like cancer

Theres an argument around whether gambling should be called a disease or not, to compare it to cancer is outrageous.

The hilarious thing is that he is so self absorbed, he has no idea why anyone would do anything to him. The Ricey example is ridiculous, he's your favourite player but you lose respect for lads that sledge you? The irony is outrageous.

    Horrible c**t

Well thanks for spoiling the book for me ....

I was just thinking that the other day. I'd say Ger Gilroy's book will be interesting if he ever writes it. I'd love to know the full story of what happened with McDevitt, Earley and those other three people that nobody can ever remember. And the story with Wooley. He just tweeted one weekend to say that he was gone, and was never mentioned on the show again.

And he wasn't mentioned in the same glowing terms as Cian Murtagh when he left so it was definitely acrimonious.

A Ger Gilroy book would be a hard read. It would look something like this while still not containing much substance. Most of it would be about him and Lance.

On another note the show is much better now with Murtagh gone. He was painfully dull.

For all their popularity how come the old Off The Ball Team have not been handed a gig with a national radio station such as 2fm/RTE? I know they do podcasts but is that really the same ? (maybe a better financial deal) Their tv show is on during the grave yard shift and it is crap -same special guests that they had through out their time on the radio

There isn't anywhere they can go really. It'd mean RTE tearing up their evening schedule and jettisoning John Creedon's music show, Arena etc. The alternative is putting them on 2fm and I'm not sure that'd work either. RTE broadcasts so little sport now, there's nothing for them on TV. It's their bad fortune, I think, that they're involved in an area where RTE has so many established presenters and programs.

Not unless they're "A pacey, informative, interactive and agenda setting sports magazine show". How many people listen to Game On, does anyone know?

    About 20,000.

I've never ever listened to Game On... I don't know why, it can't be that bad! :pac:

It never occurs to me to tune in. I've given up on 2fm because it plays crap music for tweenies all day.

Think that the last few days showed a bit of acrimony between Wooly and OTB.
I had thought it had kind of been a "by mutual agreement" parting. Don't like to see this level of sniping from him. OTB haven't bitten yet but I suspect they will at some point and then it could get nasty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 907 ✭✭✭foxtrot101

And the story with Wooley. He just tweeted one weekend to say that he was gone, and was never mentioned on the show again.

From what Parkinson tweeted last night - he only listens to OTB on Mondays and Tuesdays(the nights when Joe is on) and gets on with all the OTB team except for two. I think it's save to assume one of those is Gilroy(since he can't even bring himself to listen to him) and given his track record with management - the other one is most likely Adrian Barry.

Don't think we'll have a paper review heard them mention 3 soccer games tomorrow :(

Christ, that Parkinson twitter feed. Thought it was a troll account at first. What a clown.

They should never move the paper review, this is the best show of the whole week on Newstalk. I've no interest in the rubbish games that they put on at that hour anyway.

I can't understand why 2FM didnt just scoop up the original OTB crew when they left Newstalk. Put them straight on 2FM the next week, and everybody would have just switched the channel the next Monday.

I know it would have taken a lot of moving about and appeasing any existing staff they had in that slot. But it would have been a brave decision and I think they would still be reaping the benefits now.

Wooly's tweets. Very bitter and showing that the arsehole act he had on air was actually his true self.

He was nearly jailed in 2004 for an assault so you can make your mind up about that. I know a couple of people who were involved in Laois GAA when he was a player. Let's just say your observation about his on-air persona isn't wide of the mark. Off the Ball is blander since he left but I used to frequently turn the radio off when he was on. The laddish giggling at Parkinson and the "outrageous" things he was saying was wearing, to say the least.

I hear ya, but I think their excuse is a cop out. They tried to get a more suitable time slot at newstalk for their "brand", and Newstalk were prepared to to let the lads go. If they were as good as they thought they were any radio station, especially RTE would have got them as their formula worked.RTE had a pitful copy cat version. Many of RTE established stars are losing listeners . People still like to listen about sport ,many who listened to OTB were not even that into sport. Did Eir ever hire McDavitt, like Setanta did ? No jobs over in the UK ?

    It's losing, not loosing.....

So where do you think they should put them?

Vincent Hogan was on a couple of weeks ago so I might catch up on that one. Him, O'Toole and Kimmage are always worth a listen.

Or maybe podcasting is the future?

I rarely listen to the radio 'live' anymore and prefer to listen to the podcasts of the parts I'm interested in.

I'd imagine the Second Captains guys are very happy with how they've done since they've left. I can't imagine they were on big money at News talk.
