    The 3 ingredients

    1) Someone who's already well known and well liked by the target audience, whomever that may be

    2) Someone who'll stir up a bit of controversy - a talk shown need at least an anticipation of impending controversy

    3) Debateably, a lot of listeners actually like a host who they feel they know - so someone less private

That's Ray Foley. From what I have read here (I didn't hear it), they screwed him over on a deal so he won't be in a rush to go back and work for them.

That might have been part of Anton's 'problem' in that he didn't play the 'game' of telling everyone about his life and referencing his wife, kids, the dog, what he had for breakfast, the smell of his last poo and how he clips his toe nails, in the way almost every other radio presenter seems to do.

We get it, you have lives beyond the mic......now just entertain me by interviewing people I actually want to hear from and playing some decent music in between!

The problem was that he was probably too much the other way in that he was pretty much a blank slate - what did people know about him beyond his hard on for cars? He was an amiable and pleasant host but it's interesting that in 10 months or so of presenting the show, he revealed next to nothing of himself. I think that can be hard for people to make a connection in what's traditionally been a personality driven time slot on Irish radio.

Even Moncrieff, who seems quite guarded about himself, will make passing comments about his life outside of the studio.

I think putting the Gift Grub inserts into the later morning show and doing something new with the breakfast show is something that should be considered.

The breakfast show really needs a revamp - it's very stale and keeping Dempsey there with a new sidekick will keep the numbers high regardless. At the same time, putting the Gift Grub inserts into the new show would really help give the new presenter a leg up.

They shouldn't be shy about stealing good ideas from the infinite number of Podcasts around the world either.

    once again, fcuk and off.

As compelling and succinct as both your arguments are, the numbers disagree. Today FM has lost 40,000 listeners on lunchtime since he left. Anton has lost 49,000 since Darcy left and has been removed from the schedule. Take into account that the shows are of a different duration and had different starting figures in the first place, the percentage loss is actually much higher for lunchtime since Foley departed.

On Gift Grub, this thread would beg to differ...

I used tune in specifically for Gift Grub but it's gone sooooo stale at this stage it constitutes a health hazard.

Where have these 40k and 49k listeners gone. There's a lot more choice these days so are the days of 200k plus listenership really achievable anymore. Are they chasing a golden goose?

    Oh, sweet jesus no...

Appears to be an intelligent fellow, but he's a bit monotonous for radio.

Pity about Anton leaving. Was always easy-going, could interview to a very high standard and really put the fun back into a show that had it's fun sucked dry by Ray Darcy becoming a five star moan for X amount of years.

There is no doubting that regular radio listeners had a certainly familiarity to Anton but he really lacked that public recognition that could attract Joe/Mary Soap.

I'd put on house on TodayFM drafting in a "name" to replace him. I dread to say Hector and Delamare are surely front runners. I personally would love to see Neil Penderville or somebody left of centre put in. If only to put the cat amongst the pigeons. That media push for more female presenters is never too far away. Who would be in the mix if that was to be the case??

Prendeville? Things will never ever ever ever be that bad.

Ha!! him and Alan Quinlan from Newstalk breakfast ......!! Snoozefest ... now there's a combination from Hell

. It's like the song " you don't know what you've got til it's gone "! Today FM will regret letting Anton go.

Gift Grub doesn't need to be scrapped. It's more than savable if anyone bothers to invest in it. Putting it on a new show with a new presenter can be part of the process of giving it new life.

Wow! no mention of Anton at all on the site. Alisons first two hours are not even on the "listen back" section either, just the last hour??

The show is now called "mid morning" but Antons podcasts are there from last week .

I heard the end of Ians show, and he didnt sound happy, but he cant say too much obviously.

Oh so that wasn't just me then who couldn't find the first two hours then. I know people here can't stand Alison Curtis but I have no issue with her at all. I mean she's always the person today fm stick in when someone other than herself makes a balls of something.

I liked anton far far far far far more than dr "I've an opinion on everything" D'arcy who just had sucked the complete life out of his show by the end.

And posters saying that because anton didn't reveal things about his personal life, he didn't connect. did you ever think maybe that was by choice ? Jenny Kelly decided to let us know about everything her life and Rays and that's fair enough. Maybe anton and his wife didn't want it discussed and again that was their choice. I think Irish people in general want to know everything and when something won't tell them it seems that's not okay for some people.

Anton was a much better interviewer and moderator of a debate because we didn't know his position on anything on his show, and he was great at having the courtesy to research what was being talked about. I don't want a radio presenter giving his or her opinion on something when they've brought in guests to do just that.

So yeah anton savage move is a bad one and I think today fm have this beliefs that their audience will stay regardless and they might be in for a shock.

Iano referencing Bowie every 15mins - makes me turn of as soon as I hear it
Cant listen to Alison - voice wrecks my head
D&D ... like their childish humor.
No idea who's on then till Cooper who I listen to for my daily dose of current affairs...

Thankfully Spotify allows me to avoid those slots that I cant stand :)

I don't like Alison I am afraid, but on everything else I agree with you 100%.

A great loss to Irish radio, I was always impressed by the breadth of Anton's ability. It showed he did a lot of preparation for each and every interview, but equally, he never tried to show off what he had learned - he let the interviewee do that. The music was inconsistent though, I never felt he owned that part of the show. When he was announced as the replacement for Ray D'Arcy's I thought it was a great move from Today FM - he'd always excelled standing in for whatever roles came up. With him gone, Today FM has no daytime appeal.

I don't have a lot of choice in radio where I am, but was happy to start with Ian Dempsey, it works even though it's a tired format - I'm always tired when I'm listening so it doesn't really matter and I'd know Anton would be coming on next. Dermot and Dave grew on me, at first I'd barely make it through, but generally now I'd stay until Fergal D'Arcy, at which point the radio is off and I'm straight to my own playlists. It wouldn't go on again until after dinner, I'll catch Matt Cooper if it's on as I know Louise Duffy will come on playing a decent music mix, followed by Paul McCloone who I love, goofiness and all.

With Anton gone, I probably won't bother with the radio until the evening. I used not to like Louise Duffy in her daytime slot, there was too much forced cheeriness and ditziness, but she has proven to be better suited when allowed focus on the music so I'll happily tune in for her, and if I catch some Matt Cooper beforehand, well and good. Paul McCloone is probably the best music show out there at the moment, but I often don't get to hear it all. When the likes of Neil Delamare were stand-ins for Anton I'd sometimes listen to his recorded shows, but to be honest I find it hard to enjoy it at work as I just want to blast the music out. At this stage I probably won't listen to Today FM until the evenings

I used to really like Alison Curtis when she was in a music-heavy slot, but she's not a good fit for talk radio. The forced laughter grates on my ears which is a shame as I wanted her to do well, but she's gone the opposite direction to Louise Duffy. Come to think of it, I can't really recall any female presenters who have done well in the mid-morning magazine type shows. I wonder how Gráinne Seoige would get on?

I guess I'll wean myself off listening back to some old Anton Savage shows, starting from January 2015. Maybe we can build a best-of list of links to particularly good old shows, or at least make a compilation of the funniest quizzes.

I note too that all the old shows have been renamed to "Mid Morning", but Ray D'Arcy's old shows are still archived as "The Ray D'Arcy show". Very very petty from Today FM management. I wouldn't describe myself as a loyal listener anymore.

I have only just heard this news, havent had the radio on in the mornings since Thursday, I was wondering why Allison Curtis was on, I just assumed Anton was off sick

Anton is an excellent broadcaster he gave every guest the same respect and prep. Always struck me though that he was a bit over qualified for that role.

TX FM and Antons show both gone in the last 2 months :(

Yes the rush to remove him from the website and push out a press release saying he's been fired, then forcing Alison to make that statement belies a certain lack of priorities and an emotional unintelligence. Surely they should be getting on with recruiting his replacement and running the business than engaging in that kind of behaviour?

Is Martin King suddenly famous for something? Did she actually say `Martin King is in the building?`

Wonder how Fergal is doing in listenership figures. I don't know one person who can stand listening to him. Hopefully he'll be the next to go

Absolutely woeful. Can't last 15 minutes listening to him. Sean Moncrieff all the way at that time of the day. The problem I have now is what to listen to from 4 because Newstalk's Drive is awful scutter and no other decent shows are playing at 4 from what I can hear. Radio usually goes off then with Off the Ball or John Creedon getting an airing in the late evening depending on the mood.

Is it ? I think I've listened to newstalk once since they shock things up and that was George hook on his lunchtime spot.

My radio schedule is dictated by what I can listen to through the pc in work. It's preset to today fm but they are ways and means that we have worked out how to listen to other stations.

So it's Iano in the mornings mostly and yeah i get what people are saying about it being tired but it's proven that it's worked for years so if it ain't broke etc.
Would have listened to anton a good bit and dermot and Dave I'm big fans of so that's a plus. Fergal Darcy I'm not really pushed either way. Matt cooper is good at what he does and I'm not normally able to listen to Louise Duffy as I'm on the way home.

I have to say I didn't like Anton when he took over the show but bit by bit he won me over and it was definitely my favourite daytime radio show. Any of the stand ins are a big no for me. Alison Curtis, Paula mc Sweeney, Neil delamare are just woeful completely unnatural presenters. Hector and Paul mccloone are ok to cover a weeks holidays but that's it.

I think Sean moncrieff would make a good like for like replacement but I reckon today fm are going to go fully pc on it now and will have a presenter for what they are rather than the talent they have.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if someone like panty bliss, al porter or a transgender person got the gig. No problem with anybody getting it based on talent but I've a suspicion the next presenter will get the job based on their lifestyle rather than their talent.
