Very much looking forward to this myself. Curious to see if he'll have anyone on-air with him much, similar to the way Ann is with Louise Duffy or the way Mairead and Will were with Ray.

Great news, I really liked the show when he sat in for Ray

Great. Will be very interested to see what he'll do with it. He always had to work within the format of D'Arcy's show so I'll look forward to see what he brings to the table.

Reckon he'll need someone a little giddier than himself with him; Mairead and himself used to be quite enjoyable.

Him and Mairead seemed to get on great I have to say. Always a little flirty I thought

    well according to that article
Speaking on the programme, which was being guest presented by Neil Delamere today, Savage said the new show will have “a fair blend of stuffs – relationships, a small bit of sex… I’m told it sells so we’ll drop it in”.
“There is going to be health, there will be quirky items.”
He noted that there will be probably be fewer items about running “because I’m not much for the running”.

so it sounds like much of the same without the painful bits!

Of all the people rumoured to, and of all the people who could possibly take over from Ray D'arcy, Anton Savage is the best option and I look forward to him starting.

Best of luck to him, he'll be a breath of fresh air after what went before him.

I eagerly await his oh-so-incisive interviews of his mammy's clients.

Well it will make a change from the continuous recycling of comedians being interviewed over the years.

Didn't take long for someone to get a dig in!

Mammy didn't get him this show, the powers that be obviously thought he could do the job and general consensus is that he's a popular choice.

They're his clients too don't forget; he is a proprietary director of the firm as well.

I like Anton as a presenter, but I always have the feeling that he is constrained in what he says by his association with that communications company.. He certainly wont have the freedom to express his own opinions as belligerently as D'Arcy...

I dunno. Taken from another site, but.......
His dad is head of the state broadcaster, his mother is the governments spin doctor of choice and he’s just won the plumb job on the radio station owned by the richest man in the country who may or may not have benefitted from a number of decisions made by the government in recent years… *sigh*

I can't wait for his first segment with other people called Anton Savage.

    "Hi Anton"
    "Hi Anton"

It will be so funny. In fact I am laughing already.

Great choice with Anton, and judging by all the positive comments i'd say Today FM are wondering why they didn't shaft Ray earlier....(huh, see what I did there, I said Shaft huh huh)

Very fortunate for Today FM that the guy who got the job solely due to nepotism seems to be such a popular choice around here.

Seriously.. people will always find some angle to moan about.

For what it's worth I still like Anton, and think he's the best for the job. However, you can't deny his connections.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭Access

I am not looking forward to Anton savage taking over from Ray to be honest and when i heard the announcement on the radio this morning i rolled my eyes.

Don't get me wrong, Ray was getting painful towards the end with the constant same comedians and his strict playlist of the same twenty songs always, but I just cannot warm to anton savage at all, even when he has filled in for Ray or Matt Cooper.

I think Today FM made a mistake with this appointment.

I wont be tuning into Ray when he starts on Radio One, but i don't think i will be tuning into Anton either.

His connections would only be able to get him in the door.

His ability to do the job would then be his only defense.

And, in fairness to Anton, he has shown a huge capability to do the job and do it well over the last 5 or so years when he was called in to fill in for Ray.

And his connections will not save him if he messes up.

    Nail. Head.

Sure, his connections may have helped him get his first job with Today FM, but he's been consistently filling in all across to the station to generally positive reception for ages. When D'Arcy left, he was pretty much the front-runner from day one, not because he has connections, but because he's done well when presenting in that slot.

Just because a person has connections doesn't mean they're not talented. I think people's judgment is being clouded by some of the more egregious examples of nepotism from the state broadcaster...

No doubt he will be interviewing people on his new show that his own firm have media trained in how not to answer questions. It's all a bit farcial really.

Nah I doubt she'd leave Ian's show so early after getting it. It's a possibility but I doubt it.

One of Willie O'Rielly last acts as head of Today FM was to sack Sam Smyth and replace him with Anton Savage. It just so happened that Anton's dad was chairman of the board of organisation O'Rielly left Today fm to join. Just one of lifes little coincidences.

Wasn't Anton already doing cover work on Today FM at that stage?

You obviously don't know the real story why Smith left the station? Countless articles criticising the man who owns the entire group that paid his wages at Today FM may have played a major role in his departure.

Savage was at TodayFM for years before Smith left. He was the perfect and obvious successor for the job. I read today that Anton took that show to the highest ratings that Sunday slot ever achieved.

I am aware of this. O'Rielly quiting Today Fm just days after Sam Smyth was sacked may just be concidence, or maybe there was something more to it than that? I Don't know.

Fantastic choice. Well done today FM. goodbye Ray and the negativity. I heard that a girl Pam will be his producer. I hope he'll be creative with his new show and make it his own.

Hector is doing the show next week. I have never heard him on the radio and I am not a fan of him on tv, but seemingly he had a huge following on this 2fm show. Probably a good ploy from today fm to get him in for the week, poach a few listeners from elsewhere?

Then again if he drives me and others nuts they could also lose a few!!

Err No, his 2fm ratings were a disaster. Not as bad as breakfast republic now but still a disaster

Not sure about Anton myself. He's always been great filling in for Matt Cooper I thought but he just wasn't that much fun filling in for Ray. I always thought the show was a bit poorer for having him there. Still wish him the best of luck and hopefully now he has the room to make the show his own that things will change for the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

So is he still going to be doing savage sunday too ?

may as well rebrand the station "anton FM" (with added matt cooper ! )

    :D:D:D

while i like anton this just shows how bankrupt the profession is on the up and comer front. seriously if 8 lads in broadcasting all snuffed it in a bus crash half the countrys national radio stations would shut down.

and then the age of lottie ryan would begin !

    :D
