I've just listened to the interview and I don't have much sympathy for him. He doesn't seem like a nice person at all. He seems to think someone else is reponsible for everything he has done.

eh? from what I've seen, he's reacting to McCarron running to the media.

Has it been clarified wither or not they had sex or any form of physical contact.

I almost feel that its the father that has caused the damage to his daughter by dragging her through this whole sh1te. Fathers can't seem to grasp the possibility that their daughters are anything other than angelic saints.

Well she had to go for a STD/HIV test so unless the girl is lying about what happened then there is only one possibility.

I think like a lot of people I would be more concerned with the list of violent incidents he has been involved in and his lack of remorse for them and his reflex reaction to always blame the 'disease' or other people than the incident with the girl.

I think the gambling is his main issue but he has a pretty big issue with anger that he isn't really facing head on.

Its up to him to try harder to be a better person not just an asshole who is a recovering gambling addict.

Or the father didn't believe his daughter when she said nothing happened. The father seems very overbearing. He said she had very few friends, never goes out and they were "curtailing" her internet use at the time. She had to show him a text to meet a friend for coffee.

I think there's two sides to every story.

I wouldn't have thought many fathers would want their daughter with this guy.

I've listened to McCarron being interviewed by Eoin McDevitt (most impartial/neutral), by Wooly (most favourable/sympathetic), and now by Ger (most bullish) and, whilst the interviewer and interview style changed each time, the one constant was that McCarron came across as a wholly unlikeable, unsympathetic and, frankly, remorseless character on each occasion. He seems unwilling to accept responsibilty for his own actions, instead blaming everthing on this disease of gambling and/or others. Even the gambling addiction, he attributes to his parents splitting-up when he was young and how that traumatised him, change the bloody record.

FYI, one of my friends is just back from the GAA All-Star trip and was reliably informed out there that even McCarron's Tyrone team mates don't have much time for him, and that McCarron is still gambling! If this turns out to be true, the public backlash will be huge

Why spread rumours when you you have, and admit, there is zero proof?

What trauma? I've been to a sexual health clinic and they offer to test for it. You can test yourself at home fgs. I think the father made a meal of running his mouth off

Looks like I'm in a minority here ...

He is undoubtedly a thoroughly unlikable man who has serious anger management issues but is also a recovering addict. Addicts are generally ass holes and he has admitted everything he has done and said it was wrong.

I don't however see why he is being pilloried for the incident with the 15 year old. She was on an over 18's hook up site using a profile saying she was 19 and in college and arrived for the 'date' driving a car. The DPP has in my opinion come to the correct conclusion that there is no case to answer. The father would want to start looking in the mirror in my opinion.

The girl is undoubtedly a victim but in this instance I think he was hard done by.

He still has a long way to go to get himself right but I wish him the very best.

I just want to make people aware that players in GAA circles (who would probably know McCarron a lot better than the majority of the public) are saying he is still gambling. As for proof, what do you expect from me, a photo of him leaving Paddy Power? A friend of mine told me he heard this from GAA players on the All-Star tour - I'm just passing along the message. In fairness, he has admitted to replapsing before, it's not inconceivable that he could do so again.

Think you sum up what most of us feel to be honest though I'm not sure she turned up to the date in a car. I thought the story was she was with a car in a picture on her profile but i'm not sure. Can you drive legally at 15? Its a fcuking weird story if she was 15 with strict parents but was allowed to drive.

I find McCarron to be wholly disingenuous. I've heard a number of interviews with him, some marginally sympathetic and some confrontational. The more recent ones (Anton Savage and Gilroy) were confrontational. They called him out on items that the previous, slightly softer interviews didn't dig into.

In my opinion he's jumping on the Misery Bandwagon. In Savage's and Gilroy's interviews McCarron continually referred to the book and how helpful it could be to people going through some of the same problems he has had.
In both interviews the hosts directly asked McCarron whether he had read the book in it's entirety when completed- No was his answer.

He can't even be arsed to read his own book yet gives out advice to gambling addicts to read his book as it might inspire them to amend their ways.

    Misery Bandwagonist.

As long as you understand this is not something to be said lightly. He came close to suicide and blew 60k over a weekend when he last relapsed so if he is gambling again it is a scarily serious issue.

What's with this guy?? Who has an autobiography at 28.

He's not even famous in Ireland.

He has a gambling problem, so what? Oisin McConville already has the dibs on nordie GAA players with betting addictions writing books.

I hope he gets help and everything but Jesus Christ we all have problems in life, however people outside of immediate family and friends aren't really interested in hearing about them.

Caught a little bit of OTB last night, and have to admit I would rarely listen to it, preferring Game On.

Want to make a point, and hope it doesn't sound cruel, but Jesus Johnny Giles is dull dull dull to listen to. Everytime I catch his piece on the commute home I nearly fall asleep.

He tells the most boring stories, all of them older than the hills, about people half of us don't know or care about any longer. Is he not meant to be giving his opinion on the current game?

    Or is it just me?

My favourite part of the Giles slot is the old tales, he's brilliant at describing stuff that happened over 50 years ago when Robbie Keane struggles to describe what happened 30 minutes ago.

He won't be around for a whole lot longer so its great to have an insight as to what the game was like long before Sky took over.

Well said. There's enough armchair analysts throwing their opinions out on every aspect of the modern game 24/7. It's nice to have a break from that and hear about the game before it was awash with money

I see your point alright, but I loved listening to John talk about Bobby Charlton. The love & respect for a fella just cos he was brilliant at playing football was fantastic.

(All the more so in the current environment where football anaysis usually breaks down to "For me, that's a stonewall penalty.")

    That's a good point.

I didn't hear the panel today but did they mention the huge amount of betting company ads in football/sport nowadays?

    Excellent radio in my opinion.

Andy Lee on the dangers of boxing but the conflicting urge to fight on and,
Gary O'Toole on predatory paedophiles in sporting environments and the reluctance in governing bodies to step up.

Hey, did Andy mention the Billy Joe Saunders fight last night? I watched it, and I'd say Andy was wishing it was THAT Billy Joe Saunders that he fought last year.
