In what way was he a 'clown'?

He was a complete and utter hack. Honestly, probably the worst contribution i've ever heard to a sports talk show. He didn't know a thing about boxing either, he probably would've been more at home talking about the sporadic scraps in the compromise rules games.

Why though? It's their podcast. They aren't a state broadcaster. They can take whatever angle they like.

I didn't listen to the extract as I fast forward through such segments.

They are journalists, providing analysis to the public.. There is an expectation of well researched, balanced media coverage.

If you didn't even listen to Dave Hannigans MMA segment? Why would you defend it?

Where did I defend the segment or whoever Dave Hannigan is?

What I defend is their right to take whatever angle they like. Your expectation of journalism is misplaced. All journalism is slanted.

What makes you think journalists 'should' be balanced?

With most topics they are very fair, with their attitude to this they are forcing a populist "collegiate" opinion without offering an alternative viewpoint.

Without being glib that must reduce your media consumption to near zero levels..

As for this collegiate opinion - I would have thought MMA was very popular

The MMA coverage was disappointing. As I said earlier I love Ken's reporting on it. He clearly respects McGregor but is baffled (or feigns bafflement) by the fans and the pageantry. Hannigan was just like nine out of ten auld lads in the pub whose only input on "that cage fighting" is "If you did that to a lad in the street you'd be arrested". He really added nothing. I don't know what his usual beat is, but I hope the IT didn't pay to send him out there and put him up in a hotel. Best case scenario he was in New York doing the Christmas shopping and the lads gave him a call.

Gerry Thornley and his wet mouth remain unlistenable.

Ken in Austria was great. Without McDevitt I think he had freer reign to go off on his food tangent(I shouldn't eat that I'm a diabetic).

Anyone know where Mark got that piece of audio where Dunphy is describing Ken as a 'cogent writer - but WRONG'?

Thought yesterdays episodes were particularly funny.

I think it might be Dunphy's podcast. I read recently that he was starting one of his own. Best of luck to him and all that, but I'd rather cram my ears with bees.

It was from Game on, the awful 2fm version of OTB, I forget what he was talking about, its a couple of months old.

The podcast doesn't launch until November 21st baby

Was it something to do with John Delaney? For some inexplicable reason Dunphy always defends him.

People seeming to have a serious amount of sand in their vaginas in this thread.

Everyone knew what the lads' opinion was in the US Election. If it bothered you that much, you shouldn't have listened to it.

Not sure of the problem with the coverage of McGregor? I'm actually a fan of his (not in the scary Wonderfullife way) but I didn't mind the section on him at all. Hannigan is entitled to his opinion, and I find it baffling that people are being critical of the lads coverage of the fight by having Hannigan on. Ken and Mark were actually defending McGregor during the piece. If people can't take a step back and see why others would take the piss out of the hoolabaloo around McGregor and the UFC, then that's their problem. It's comical at times.

I actually listened to it at lunch time just so I could get a feeling for how much of a hack this lad was..

Fairly mild stuff I have to say.. Hardly stuff to be getting your knickers in a twist about.

Hannigan is stealing a living. He was dead to me as a credible journo when he started talking about how "black players like Blake Griffin" (seriously, just Google him once before you talk about him in a professional capacity) were really upset with the LA Clippers race row years ago. His UFC 'analysis' was absolute trash. "It was a draw, which was baffling to me!" Nearly every person with knowledge of the sport at the time had a draw as the likely, or at least a possible, result for Wonderboy/Woodley in seconds on Twitter. He still doesn't understand basic fight scoring days after watching the event he's brought on to be an 'expert' on. I don't care about his hack attempt to wind people up about disliking MMA, but why am I listening to him instead of someone who at least understands the basics of the sport?! Why do Irish people consider him a 'journalist' or a source? He has a taxi driver level of qualification to talk about sport.

    Irishman does great in UFC.

They interview some gombeen who has nothing but negative things to say at the achievement. Basically calls it a stupid sport and says McGregor will never compare to Ali unless he converts to Islam and embraces the prophet Muhammad...all the while being egged on by the sniggers of that other idiot murph.

That's why there's sand in my ****ing vagina.

Did he claim to be an expert on MMA?

What is all the sensitivity about?

Why are you getting sensitive about my opinion? I'm not talking about you. :pac:

If the lads talk GAA they get a GAA expert on.
If they're talking soccer they get a soccer expert on.
So for MMA they get some goof on who has an axe to grind with the sport... He came off as a right tosser on the pod anyway. No insight into the fight just winging...compared it to WWE, wanted McGregor to convert to Islam and just insisted it wasn't a real sport anyway.

Is he a troll or what.

Is it a real sport though? :)

Ah no only joking it's good craic

Not the first time Second Captains have had a segment on MMA/McGregor where there's a negative vibe to it. Clear they don't like him or the sport which is fine.

But don't give us that rubbish. We are not asking for a McGregor nut hugging section but Jesus Christ give fair dues. That was just an opportunity to belittle his achievements and the sport. They knew well what they were doing getting hannigan on. They would not do that to any other Irish man, woman or team.

Anyhow love the show. But that was just poxy.

A genuine argument is to be had for sure.

But not a day after what an Irishman has achieved in the sport. It's typical Irish begrudgery at its finest.

They should have interviewed someone who knew what they were talking about. The guy openly admitted he had NO IDEA about MMA.

    What.

It's genuinely infuriating. I'm not the biggest MMA fan myself nor do i claim to be an expert on it but I can recognise what an achievement it is for McGregor to do what he's done in such a short time.
To have someone on immediately after he's done that just to belittle and laugh and generally be cùntish about the whole thing was just a mind boggling decision.
The lads are nearly always great. I just don't understand the decision to have such a gobshìte on the pod to discuss something he knows nothing about.

Lads, are ye all being held at gunpoint and forced to listen to the show or what???

There's always the fast forward and/or unsubscribe button if you genuinely don't like the content

This is a forum where we can surely discuss such things. Sometimes people express they love a segment, compliment an interview or say how funny ken was. We can also comment on what we didn't like about a particular segment.

If you don't like the posts here surely you can just not read the thread.....

Pointless post. Unsubscribe from the thread of you don't like the discussion. It's a thread to discuss second captains...good or bad.

    That's quite an excellent riposte....to a point that I didn't make.

Never said anything about not liking the posts/discussion on here.

I'd imagine there's endless indepth, detailed analysis and coverage of MMA out there. I don't think a podcast based in this country, under the banner of the Irish Times and hosted by a bunch of fellas in their mid to late 30's is going to ever cover something like MMA in the way that would be acceptable to hardcore fans.

    You're missing the point entirely.

What point? That a few people are miffed that they wheeled out some windbag journalist to crap on endlessly about a sporting event???

They do the same thing on a regular basis with Gerry Thornley and Gabriel Marcotti :-)

The Irish Times send one of it's journalists, a consistent critic of UFC, to Vegas to cover the fight. An Irish Times podcast had said journalist on to discuss the fight. I think the real problem with the interview is Dave Hannigan's unfortuntate habit of laughing at his own jokes, but he always does that.

Ken, in his own way, tried to defend McGregor and UFC. Mark Horgan is a huge boxing and came at it from the angle of a boxing purist who doesn't rate UFC. The Ali reference came up mainly because Hannigan has just written a book about him. Horgan absolutely hero worships Ali, hence the ott reaction to the comparison.

It's normally something I would have skipped over, I can see why UFC fans might be annoyed, if there Eoin hadn't been off it would have be a more balanced interview.

I don't think it could have been balanced when they asked a guest on who is disgusted by the sport. Jesus I've listened to lots of interviews of misinformed or people without much knowledge on the sport but to get someone who absolutely hates the sport and everything it stands for isn't appropriate and i think it should be called out.
