In the hands of most developers it produced poor results compared to the PS, but in the hands of Sega, we got Burning Rangers, Nights Into Dreams even Sonic R!
Not to mention the glory of Panzer Dragoon Zwei

So many amazing arcade ports though!

I had one in a cab for ages with one of The Last Bandit's Jammacons and it's just unbelievable how many arcade games you suddenly have access to.

Even though Daytona looked a little rough, it played like a dream, Sega Rally still rocks all these years later.

Well Sonic R came from Travellers Tales and might be one of the most technically impressive Saturn games, up there with Panzer Dragoon Saga or Burning Rangers.

Even the very best looking Saturn 3D games looked bad compared to what the PS1 offered. 3D really was an after thought for the system. It really showed how disorganised Sega was at the time. At the time nobody really knew if 3D was the future (remember the failure of the Jaguar and 3DO didn't exactly set the world on fire) but the Sega arcade department were leading the charge in 3D technology with the Model 2 board being an incredibly advanced piece of kit. If the arcade division was involved they would have insisted on a polygon based system.

Instead Sega went for a compromise with the Quad based system. It basically just distorted sprite bitmaps to simulate 3D. This might seem mental but you have to remember the 3DO did ok in Japan and many Japanese developers had developed games for it and that was a Quad based system as well. I'd say Sega was hoping to get 3DO developers on board.

Well, the 3DO was excellent, as Steve will attest.
Wing Commander 3 looked great on the system, as did Raid Rash, Need for Speed and the magnificent Return Fire.

Well as the PS4 and WiiU have shown it's sometimes not about how good the games are :(

There was lots of promise in those early years, in 95, with the Saturn, PS, 3DO and Jag just about still on the scene, MD and Snes still bringing the hits, the N64 and the trusty Gameboy some 6 years after release.

The 3DO must be my least played console. The Jaguar,32X and original Xbox even get more love :pac:

The N64 didn't hit the market till mid 1996, and didn't make it to our shores till March 1997!

I was wondering recently what that guy was up to these days, I see his 'gamesanimal' website is long gone.

Just did a bit of stalking and it looks like he's now a tattoo artist running a tattoo studio

    https://www.facebook.com/daveperrytattoo

Wonder would he do a Mario 64 themed piece? Could have an ice slide going the whole way down your arm with Mario falling off the top of it :pac:

It also released 3 weeks early in German. It was a complete cluster**** of a launch but people were screaming for it still. It was amazing to see how quick it lost momentum after everyone had finished Mario 64 multiple times.

I wish someone would do an article on the European launch, I remember the excitement on digitiser at the time since it was such a mess.

I wonder if Nintendo will eventually push onto a snes device given the nes release seems like a massive success, or will it be a one and done type of gig.

Would seem like a logical plan, the board in the NES is capable of emulating SNES stuff and probably N64.

So are these current NES/Fami classic shortages all part of the hype machine Nintendo has going for it ay the moment or did they just screw up their forecasts ?

A lot of people are saying it's Nintendo holding stock back like they always do. Apparently that's just awful journalism. A comment on the Usgamer site explains things a lot better.

Nintendo don't and never had a distribution network so can't keep a lot of stock in warehouses an rely on retailers to do that for them. So they have to be a little bit careful not to over manufacture above demand. the Nintendo shortage thing seems to be a side effect of this, one that Nintendo might see as beneficial but one beyond their control.

The NES Mini is nice, but I wouldnt be paying 200-300 euro for one thats for sure. Which is the asking price from some sellers on eBay and Amazon.
It's not worth more than its asking price.

There'll be a lot more stock before XMas. It's like with the Amiibo's, initial shortages and then they're not too hard to find.

    6/10 sound track.

It's a Sega owned game and Sega have been working with them so I'd say that is how they got it. I doubt treasure had a say.

well at least I can hold out hope for the Columns soundtrack! :)

How playable are retro games on a 9" Sony PVM Monitor with 450 lines?

Our 32" Widescreen Trinitron will be going to CRT Heaven soon, unless any corkonians want it for free (it works grand) so I wont have any CRT capable of 60hz for modded consoles anymore.

I'll be in close proximity to the monitor, it will be up on a desk.

I'm just wondering if it would it be too small to make the experience worthwile?

Not really keen on shipping something larger over here.
