This thread has been going on for so long now, I'm pretty sure this post will get ignored, but I wanted to get this off of my chest.

Anyone who knows me or my posts, know that I am an extremely liberal person. I supported gay marriage and even spoke at events, in the papers and on the radio about it. I am 100% pro-choice and firmly and truly believe that all human beings are equal, regardless of race, gender, sexuality and so on.
If I were an American, I would not have voted for Trump. I despise everything about the man.

HOWEVER, this election was lost not just by the corrupt DNC, but also by the "far-left" A group which in recent years has basically become semi-fascist in their views. You accept that if you are white, straight and male, that you are the enemy. Everything is your fault, even if you're poor.

Just a few months ago the very people who thought I was great because I spoke out for gay marriage and did the AMA here on boards. But my gods didn't many of those same people turn on me. I was directly called homophobic for the very simple fact I am straight. I was called sexist, because I am white.

To the fascist left who screamed and hurled abuse at people who didn't totally agree with them, you are the reason millions of anti-Trump people did not vote. Never in history has hurling abuse at someone caused them to agree with you or change their minds.

Ordinary people who supported Bernie Sanders were already so disillusioned that the DNC -rigged- the primaries so that Hilary would win were automatically put off her. And anyone who dared to question Hilary were deemed as a sexist and Trump supporters.
What kind of mental logic is that?

Yes, I'm liberal leaning and I think it's reflected in most of what I've posted on boards over the years but I wouldn't identify with what the left has morphed into. I still believe in what I always have but the shrill nature of what is going on in political discourse is just so off putting. It's has nearly come to the point where you have to read a manual and 100% agree with every single point before you can call yourself a liberal and if you disagree with any of it then obviously you are sexist, homophobic pig. There is no nuance left anymore and debate has become black and white with no potential to meet in the middle.

Most of your points are valid. However, I think you may be confusing the left in america with middle-class whinny kids with no concept of the real world.

The problem is that they are the ones being most vocal and cutting off debate by shouting down everyone else online. That goes for both left and right.

Just out of curiosity, why were you being labeled a homophobe. Given your history both on and off here, that's pretty extraordinary for you to be accused of that.

All the big contenders in this election from Hillary, Bernie and Trump are very old. Perhaps the next election the parties might focus on young blood, people who will bring that new face to the electoral.

Aye, and much more than that. The current Hispanic birth rates/demographics over Whites mean that the Republican Party would have enormous difficulty in relation to future elections.

If the Democrats won this election, you could almost say goodbye to the Republican party.

It doesn't work like that. 28% voted for Trump from the Hispanic community. And Trump wasn't exactly complimentary shall we say. A future Republican candidate could appeal to Hispanics in even greater numbers and reach out to them.

All this nonsense about Hillary having this great "ground game", turned out to be just that, nonsense. The Trump supporters were more determined.

ExceLent points above re Sanders as well. When Sanders was supporting Clinton he didn't look at all convincing. And this was a guy with a LOT of support.

As for those protesters....were the Trump sup porters not supposed to be th he uneducated ones ???

More people voted for Barack Obama than voted for Hillary, and the same can be said for Donald Trump and Mitt Romney.

Donald Trump didn't win because he was the better choice. Donald won because both choices were absolutely terrible, but through a combination of astounding corruption, both by the DNC, the media and absolutely mind boggling arrogance, I would happily state that a large number of Bernie voters refused to support Hillary. Because she represents nothing but the status quo of politicians. Corruption, pay-offs and just as much flip-flopping as Trump.

Let's all just be happy it's Trump and not Mike bloody Pence.

Very good post and probably sums a lot of what others feel.

Yes, I agree with a previous poster as well, your politics are slightly more about what stage you are at in the cooking process in that melting pot, than your actual background or heritage. Slightly more.

Because I dared to disagree with a blanket statement that straight white males were the cause of the worlds problems. When I pointed out that my own parents are two women, I was told I "tokenizing" them and was inherently homophobic because I am straight.

In my honest opinion, the worlds problems have majoritively been caused by the top 1% rich elite, who use money and power to push their own agendas to increase their own power and money.

What I love the most about the Trump win is how all these holier than thou smart arses in the media who as always 'know what's best' for their country ahead of the ordinary joe soap, those stupid celebs and the establishment.. they are all getting a massive kick in the nuts with the realisation as to how insignificant they really are in the minds of the general public.

Just goes to show how bad Clinton really was as a candidate that she had everything in her favour and still didn't get over the line.

With someone as.... "conspicuous" as the Gob, that shafting will be so loud, so arrogantly obviously and visible, it'll likely generate a knee jerk reaction among nutheads with little to lose, the consequences of which are long overdue for the American top floor.

    Go right ahead, Mr President..

They are hugely significant in the mind of the American public. It has to be the most material / celebrity obsessed nation on earth. The thing is Trump was the biggest celebrity in this race and his nifty slogans and rhetoric won over a lot of people.

    Go right ahead, Mr President..
The implications of this presidency not only that you mentioned, but for the DNC (finger pointing, no power, potential break off of Bernie Bros section, growth in the Elizabeth Warren end, etc, etc) and GOP (having to actually govern as opposed to just uniting under the word 'no' - they're a massive fractured party at the heart of things after the last eight years between the centre-right, evangelicals, tea partiers, Trumpeteers, libertarians borrowing the letter 'R', etc etc) could have some incredibly massive implications... IF the other groups can act well on it (to which Trump has given a bit of a blueprint, to be fair) using new forms of open/social media to push themselves to the forefront.

Being realistic there's still not a great chance of it, and it would likely take multiple election cycles of picking up steam but hey... here's hoping, third party voting this time around did go up from 1.1% to 5.1% from 2012 after all! :)

I got off my plane from Philadelphia this morning and saw a tweet from Trump saying that protestors were being "incited by the media" and that the protests were "unfair!".

Went to bed for a hours rest and woke up to another tweet from Trump praising the protestors.

What a bag of petulance and contradiction.

BTW, I was so surprised by his body language yesterday during the meeting with Obama. I bet many people would have loved to hear that conversation.

    I have a theory....

Obama: Well, Don, congrats. I have some bad news for you, nothing matters.

    Trump: Come again Barry?

Obama: During WW2, we captured a UFO that came down during the Trinity Nuclear test. Emp knocked it out. We reverse engineered it and in the 80s made a breakthrough in understanding space time. Long story short we built an array in Alaska that can create a wormhole into the future. You'd think the aliens in the 40s would have seen our bomb blast effect coming, but hey....
Anyway, we hooked up a supercomputer and started recording data. We pin pointed a MASSIVE rise in a rare earth metal - just appeared out of nowhere - that we eventually figured out was due to a near catastrophic comet impact triggering a super volcano under Yellowstone.
The atmosphere will be made unbreathable on the surface for at least a thousand years. We built deep underground bases in the Alps and Greenland that will be used to maintain a population of 500 million with non uv dependant, geothermal agriculture and all the tickets are already sold to those who tested as gifted on school testing and they are all going to be rounded up when the time comes.
That time is 2018 my friend.

    Donald: But... I...

Obama: So you see.... All you did was stop an old lady from Manning the teleprompter for 2 years...
Oh and they absolutely have the power to kill you the second you try to tell anyone. All presidential events are attended by fifteen "crazed gunmen". In fact I've spent the last eight years never more than 20 feet from at least one...

    Donald: ....

Obama: C'mon, Don! We have a press conference to attend!

    Donald: ....

Sad that no one has exposed her publicly as the con-artist, attention seeker and charlatan that she is.

The fact that you're asking the question is a reflection of a lack of understanding of the nature of the US. Stop thinking of it as a single country like Ireland and start thinking of it as a federation of independent, sovereign states with their own Constitutions, governments, legal systems, etc, like the EU.
It's ironic for you to make a statement repining a lack of knowledge of the governmental design of the USA vs Ireland and the EU, when you've just made that blunder.

The EU is confederation of independent states like Ireland.

The USA is not a confederation, it is a federation of non-independent states; just like the Russian Federation with its republics, krais and obalasts, where the President is elected by way of popular vote.

There is no legitimate, democratic reason why a federation should not elect a President by way of popular vote.

The states are already represented disproportionately to population in the US Senate. There is absolutely no legitimate reason why the President should be elected in such a non-democratic way in a federation where the people, and not the states, are sovereign.

When you listen to Obama, he is a very good orator and could convince you of anything but he has obviously been a poor negotiator to get Republicans on his side and get things done. Lincoln was able to negotiate with other politicians who didn't agree with him on many issues.

Obama not being able to 'humanize' with the other opposition to him is his big downfall during his administration. If he could secretly talk with Republicans and gain traction with them, he would have been a great President but he has will be just a good and decent President. Nothing radical (except that a black man became President which is a great achievement in its own right) but in terms of his administration, not much to write home about.

Every single thing he did, tried to do was voted down. The republicans wouldn't even acknowledge he was American. Disgraceful part of history.
