Great stuff. Looked like Philly was down with a dose of man-flu but he asked some great questions. Loved the reveal that they drilled fake knockdowns ahead of Diaz 2 to simulate Conors responses to it. Also great to hear that even if pro-MMA fades away in Ireland in the future that John will stick at the martial arts coaching for the love of it.

Yeah John seems to be in it for the long haul which is great to see, the true pioneer of MMA in Ireland, his fighters have created the sport's bubble in this country and I don't see it fading away when Conor retires.

If you compare it to something like club soccer in this country, it's suffering because there aren't many good coaches still here, they're all in the UK or somewhere else, so the development of talent is failing at the most fundamental level. MMA is succeeding because it's the complete opposite of that, there are genuine top class coaches like Kavanagh nurturing talent and creating UFC level fighters.

SBG does seem to have a bit of a monopoly on the very best talent in the country, but it's mainly because it's such a professional and high level team that you have guys like James Gallagher who moved to Dublin at 15 just to develop his skills there. It all goes back to the point that Kavanagh is doing things very, very well. We mightn't see another McGregor-level fighter come out of SBG again, but I'm certain there will be a few not a million miles off it.

Yep. Never say never but i imagine everybody associated with SBG Concorde knows Conor McGregor is a once-in-a-liftetime fighter. Don't get me wrong, we might see (in some ways) better fighters than Conor produced by SBG - better grapplers, better wrestlers, cleaner jiujtsu, sharper muay-thai etc.

But there really truly is only one Conor McGregor. His mix of dedication, discipline, obsession, charisma, skill and self-belief is unmatched. Many can attempt to copy but there is only one.

Same with Muhammad Ali. Many came after him just as talented, if not more so, in boxing. You can argue a case for prime Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather etc but there is only one Ali.

So i think the next 5 years we will see a steady trickle through of Irish fighters from SBG, Team Ryano and the likes making a splash on the world stage but the Conor-experience for all concerned (coaches, family, friends and fans) is a once-in-a-lifetime ride.

I'm personally excited to see what Sinead Kavanagh can do with a step-up in levels because there are so few women at the top level who possess genuine KO-power. She relies on her chin far too much but that can be tightened up and improved. It'll do female MMA in Ireland no harm to have a healthy Aisling Daly back with Sinead making it to the UFC eventually.

He's also a great example to young people. Faced a lot of adversity with the death of his brother from drug addiction and does a lot in the community to raise drug awareness.

I was super impressed by his knowledge and how he crafted his questions. Most interviews John gets asked the same stuff and can rattle off the answers in his sleep. In this one, he really had to think and that's always a sign of a great interview.

Sean Sheehan lol yeah i said on this thread he really blew the questions. To be fair he's a good listen on the podcast but he sounded nervous in the conference call.

How hard would it be to just relax and be natural?! Get on the phone saying "Conor what's the craic, can you just tell us how it felt to get a solid camp in at home for this one?". Instead he effectively asked him would he be throwing spinning sh1t this fight. Actually he asked both fighters questions they couldn't answer. Complete fail.

I'm open to correction but to the best of my knowledge Severemma have never participated in the conference calls before.

Andrew is obviously with the Mac Life now but sure you don't need experience to sit in your boxers in your bedroom and make a phone call. If anything you'd imagine it's the most relaxed you could be. If it was face-to-face i'd give him some leeway lol.

I highly doubt Sheehan will be taking over any interviews. He very rarely attends any domestic mma events. He recently got a job with Sherdog as well - Amazing what can be done from your bedroom.

I'd agree there, he's very good at what he does but he's not an interviewer atal!

Didn't deny when asked about becoming a father anyway. I doubt that, or the fitness thing is his big announcement though

They've some cheek asking him with Dee literally standing 3 feet away lol. Sure what can he do? I'm sure he'd love to deck that gobsh1te from TMZ who asked him about a fight with Jesus and "casual racism" but sure it's not worth the hassle.

Conor never came out saying he had a big announcement in the first place. Dana tried to make himself look better in the eyes of some fans for making the Alvarez-McGregor fight and skipping the number 1 contender. He tried to hint there was reasons Conor had to fight soon and that's why Khabib didn't get the shot. It snowballed from there into a "big announcement".

Didn't Dana strike a deal with TMZ?

I hate the way they carry on as well, but TMZ aren't a crowd you want to be on the bad side of. Not in a "they'll murder you and your family and bury the bodies in the desert" way, but they can make a celebrity's life very, very difficult if they want to. That's why you see most people are civil with them.

I certainly wouldn't have the patience for it.

I've less of a problem with them door-stopping celebrities and chasing them through airports and more of a problem with the mindless stupid questions they ask! All that effort to track him down and first question is "will you buy a private jet?". WTF

Dana loves TMZ because they love buzz words and don't ask him about stupid things like fighter pay and unions.

This time next week, one of the most epic cards in mma history will be getting ready to kick off and an Irish lad is heading it to make UFC history. Can....not....wait!

Free fight of Eddie Rda up. I don't think either looked to be stuck in the mud!

Eddie hasn't been taken down in the UFC.

Really interesting fight, both Conor and Eddie are warriors so it could be a case of who breaks first. Long gritty fight.

Some nice leg kicks to RDA's lead leg Conor wouldnt wanna be eating many of them vital to check them,

His boxing isnt anything special no jab no sharp counters just winging hail mary style overhand rights mixed with an occasional upper cut.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭wonderfullife

    Disgraceful stuff from the UFC.

Their main event tonight is RDA v Ferguson and they choose TODAY to upload a free video of him being demolished by Alvarez.

There's no excuses. Wait until tomorrow to release that. I thought they'd have learned their lesson from the Tyron Woodley incident.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,318 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I agree that's lousy on RDA and they should have waited until tomorrow or just use one of his other super exciting UFC fights to hype 205 instead....oh wait.

alvarez' victory gets less impressive every time I watch it I think, fair play to him but amount of shots he missed on a rocked rda and how open he left himself during almost the entire barage at the end isn't a great look
