I have a work night out on Friday in Dublin city centre. Will I be walking into Ireland's answer to The Purge?

Best night ever, there will be lock-ins in every pub.

Anybody know if it could cause any disruption at the airports?
I know the immigration desk has a Gardai logo above it, are these people actual guards who will be on strike ?

Add a few hours to flights coming into t2. Pax will have to be bussed to t1 to be checked .. Civilians work in t1. Whereas t2 there are only guards doing immigration

    Good luck!

Is it reasonable that a garda in a quiet rural village is paid the same as a garda in a west dublin suburb riddled with drugs and gun violence?

well, you don't really know where the crime is going to happen.

otherwise you have a system whereby teams in busier areas get a "performance bonus" at the end of a crime-ridden, but that has an incentive to report lots of crime so not sure it's the way to go really. More crime = more pay, but prevention is also a big part.

you could arguably differentiate due to differences in cost of living

    Yeah I guess.

Look I don't think any of us would begrudge young gardai a pay rise, just as soon as someone explains where the money for it will come from...

The politicians are in it for themselves. While everyone else were getting a fiver increase and told to eat hay they awarded themselves €100 increase minimum per week.

    Keep the recovery going!

You do realise that 'pay rise' is linked to the Lansdowne Road agreement which /restores/increases the pay of the vast majority of public and civil servants in the country (assuming their union is signed up to it) and wasn't just a random payrise for politicians, no matter how easy a soundbite to swallow it is??

how about we take it from the Christmas bonus for the dole monkeys who have never worked recession or boom time ?
or the politicians pay or stop free legal aid for people with 20 or more convictions.
or make the politicians pay or their own transport to and from the dail
get mick wallace to pay his tax bills
dock court fines from wages or dole payments would save millions
set up drunk tanks with a 100 euro charge instead of putting them in ambos

its not hard its what politicians are supposed to to actually

I see that all the talk is of pay 'restoration' to pre crisis levels. I.E Celtic tiger boom time pay rates.
Yet the unemployment rate is still at 7.7%, not under 5% back then.

So, tell you what. Once the unemployment rate goes back to 2007-2008 levels we should talk pay restoration. Otherwise, nope. Leave it out.

There are loads of people applying to be a Guard, no shortage of recruits so it cannot be all that bad. Is turn over high? I doubt it.

What I wouldn't give for a strong Government to face down these militant unions.
As per usual, the populist muppets will buy off the strikers using yours and my money.
It's ironically criminal that these incredibly well remunerated public servants would attempt to hold the country to ransom.

when the first recruitment started something like 30 000 people applyed for 300 jobs ,

in the latest recruitment 1200 people applied for 600 jobs .

you have to think the quality will suffer

It's the unions that have helped make this mess. They would not allow the GRA and AGSI come to their own deals outside of Lansdown Road even though they weren't a part of the negotiations. Back when the new sick regulations were brought in the big unions threatened actions of Gardaí were given any derrogations from it.

Let's be real here, the likes of Gardaí, nurses and prison officers should not be in the same negotiations as clerical workers and cleaners. The jobs are too unique to be negotiated on the same basis. Time for a little separation in talks.

16,700 apply for 600 trainee garda positions

Do share where you're getting your 1200 figure from.

Pay restoration is the PR friendly euphemism for a pay rise.

Govt: Right, you're on 500 a week, but we're having a little crisis now and can't afford that, so we're cutting your wages to 400.

Garda: Well ok, boss, but what's the chances of restoring pay when you have a bit more cash?

Govt: Yeah, we'll do that when we have the cash, don't worry about it, it's just a temporary cut.

    Garda: Sound.

    ....

    ....

Garda: So anyway, boss, now that the good times are back, how about that pay restoration deal you promised?

Govt: Yeah, no, sorry, no can do, that's a pay rise you're talking about, we don't do those...

Garda: But... what about the 5k extra you lads are getting?

Govt: No, you see, that's pay restoration... we could explain but you wouldn't understand the difference.

That's the problem right there - the good times are not back.

Government is still running deficit and borrowing to pay PS wages.

Come back to us when we're back in the black :pac:

Open season on the bus lanes friday.

ATMs are normally topped up on a friday, to last the weekend, but won't
be tomorrow. So some/all could run low/out during the weekend. It would
be wise to stockpile your spondoolas in advance.

Don't think the guards have anything to do with the topping up of ATMs.

The Army will probably be doing that as they will be guarding the ATM's

Oh you don't think? So you're not sure. Seems there's a lot you don't know about. CIT companies will not be delivering cash to ATMs on Friday. Which is one of the two days that they are filled. They will likely run low.

I can draw pictures for you if necessary.

Unions did the right thing, the gardaí wanted the best of both worlds as usual

Government need to face these buckos down and then have a root and branch reform as happened with the RUC. Should have happened at the same time as the RUC were overhauled with the patten report recommendations.

No need for this. Keep this on topic.

In what way did they want the best of both worlds? Either treat the Gardai as special and exclude them from talks in favour of individual negotiations or treat them like everyone else and allow them access to the same industrial relations mechanisms and negotiations as everyone else. It's the government that wanted both ways. Exclude Gardai from talk and industrial relations while simultaneously binding them to the outcomes.

The purge is starting early round my way with a parked car being set on fire last night. Friday should be fun.
