    Forecasts for Ireland

Yesterday's forecast went missing somewhere in cyber-space, I thought it was posted but I may have spaced out and copied it for security then gone off to Irish Weather Online over on facebook where it certainly got posted from the copy that I made. Sorry about that. There weren't any big changes as I recall, but anyway, on to the current forecast ...

TODAY ... A few brief morning showers in central counties, otherwise cloudy with a few breaks, moderate southeast breezes and highs 14-16 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy, turning rather cold with brisk east-southeast winds developing, drizzle near east coast, lows 4-8 C.

MONDAY ... Mostly cloudy, patchy drizzle near east and south coasts, better chance of brighter intervals in the west, cool with highs only 11-13 C in brisk east winds 30-50 km/hr.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, slightly milder, lows 3-7 C and highs 12-16 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... At this point, a second wave of colder air from the east seems likely and the dry, cool pattern may end with low pressure systems trying to push through the south and towards Scotland, leading to spells of rain and cyclonic wind patterns with associated temperature fluctuations. A warmer pattern seems likely eventually as this blocking pattern breaks down.

Hurricane Matthew is on his last legs after a terrible day of heavy rain and pounding storm surge for the Carolinas. Some places have had almost 500 mm of rain from the storm, and a heavy rain shield extends as far north as Washington DC. Earlier model ideas about Matthew making a long clockwise loop back towards the south or even back to the Bahamas now look like science fiction and the trend is back to a gradual absorption by a front further north, maybe around Newfoundland on Monday-Tuesday. However, Matthew may lose all tropical characteristics by tonight when northwest of Bermuda. Meanwhile, Nicole, which weakened to a tropical storm and drifted south, is getting ready to make a return trip north and keep going past Bermuda the next time. Both of these remnants may play some role in European weather patterns eventually but certainly not in their tropical strength. ... My local weather, first of all on Friday which I wasn't able to post, cloudy and dry with a high near 14 C, then Saturday turned out abysmally wet (50-75 mm of rain fell, mostly in the morning), and the high was a shivery 11 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny intervals, moderate southeast winds backing to east 30-50 km/hr, scattered light showers. Highs 12-15 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, rather cold, lows 3-7 C.

TUESDAY ... A mixture of cloud and sun, chilly southeast winds, highs 11-14 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Cloudy, some drizzle and cool east winds, lows 2-6 C and highs about 11-13 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Confidence is low on details as the models struggle to work out the future of Matthew's remnant low. The consensus would be a continuation of rather cool and cloudy conditions with occasional light rain or drizzle. Some chance exists of heavier rain developing, and then there is a complete disagreement among various global models about how much warming might follow. Some guidance indicates very mild weather, other sources stick to similar cool and cloudy, showery weather. A lot depends on whether Matthew's remnant low moves well to the north or tries to push into western Europe against the blocking high. If the latter is the actual outcome, warmer air will begin to flow north. This is the scenario that I think will come to pass, around next weekend, but with the warmer air some rain may linger before there's any clearing trend.

Meanwhile, Matthew's remnant low is currently well to the southeast of Cape Cod and headed for eastern Newfoundland. The odd thing is, that was the model forecast about two weeks ago, then we had a few days of fantasy charts where Matthew went around in a big loop, visiting Nicole and then Florida. One model even had it going across the Gulf of Mexico into the Yucatan Peninsula. Chaos was rampant for a while. Nicole, meanwhile, has been hanging around with no particular reason to move, between Puerto Rico and Bermuda, but now this tropical storm will start heading northeast towards Bermuda; eventually it will once again become a rather strong hurricane and will head to Newfoundland. ... My local weather on Sunday was mostly cloudy with a little sunshine at times, but thankfully dry, if rather cold at 11 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, some brighter intervals in Leinster and Ulster, light drizzle at times in west Munster, and later some brief showers developing in north Leinster and east Ulster. Highs 13-15 C. Moderate southeast winds at 30 to 50 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals, fog or mist patches, lows 5-8 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy to overcast, patchy drizzle, winds easterly at about 40 km/hr adding some chill, highs near 14 C.

THURSDAY ... Cloudy, drizzle near east coast, moderate east winds and highs near 14 C.

FRIDAY ... Cloudy, some light rain developing, southeast winds to 50 km/hr and highs near 14 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Rain at times, fog and drizzle, winds backing to southerly by late Sunday, milder. Highs 16-17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Temperatures may peak around 18 C on Monday or Tuesday, with further showers. It will then turn windy and a bit cooler for the rest of the week, with highs near 14 C. However, another warmer interval will follow near the end of the week.

The low passing to the south of Ireland on the weekend will contain some of the remnant energy from Matthew. That system is now passing through Newfoundland after drenching parts of eastern Canada on Monday. Meanwhile, Nicole is slowly building strength to take a run at Bermuda and will then become a hurricane south of Nova Scotia late this week into the weekend. ... My local weather on a holiday Monday was partly cloudy and cool with highs near 12 C. We are expecting a big rain and wind storm mid-week but that won't arrive until late Wednesday.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy to overcast, patchy drizzle, winds easterly at about 40 km/hr adding some chill, highs near 14 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, light drizzle or rain in a few places, more likely near east coast, lows 5-8 C.

THURSDAY ... Cloudy, drizzle near east coast, moderate east winds 30 to 50 km/hr and highs near 14 C.

FRIDAY ... Cloudy, some light rain developing, southeast winds to 50 km/hr, lows near 8 C and highs near 14 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Rain at times, fog and drizzle, winds backing to southeast on Saturday, and southerly by late Sunday, milder. Highs 15-16 C. About 20-30 mm of rain will break the dry spell (or less wet spell) for most.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Monday may see temperatures peaking around 17 C with any breaks, but further rain will arrive, and it could be heavy at times into Tuesday morning before a clearing trend begins, as cooler westerly winds set in. That will last a few days and then more anticyclonic conditions may follow with frosty nights and hazy but relatively pleasant days.

Nicole has moved very little in the past day, but has strengthened a little to a minimal hurricane intensity. This storm will slowly approach Bermuda from the southwest and could also intensify to category 2 or even 3 around that time. From there, it will slowly push further northeast and die out over several days south of Newfoundland, losing tropical characteristics.

My local weather on Tuesday was clear and crisp, the high was about 13 C. We have a major wind and rain storm moving in that is expected to be hitting its peak around Thursday early morning. But the first part of the day may continue to be sunny before its cloud shield spreads in.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, outbreaks of light rain or drizzle but amounts generally less than 2 mm. Moderate east to southeast winds 30-50 km/hr and highs 12-15 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, light rain or drizzle at times in west and south, lows around 8 C.

FRIDAY ... Occasional rain, 5-15 mm in places, fog developing, southeast winds about 30-50 km/hr and highs 12-15 C.

SATURDAY ... Rain may be heavy at times, with brief brighter intervals, not as windy, lows near 10 C and highs near 14 C.

SUNDAY ... Foggy, some rain at times, mild. Lows near 11 C and highs about 15 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, showers, mild. Highs near 17 C.

OUTLOOK ... Windy and cooler, showers at times, then turning milder late in the week. From about the 20th on, a large high pressure area will drift around near Ireland but may withdraw to the west far enough to turn a mild westerly into a cooler north to northwesterly breeze, but this interval should be mainly dry and probably quite misty or foggy at night. Rather typical late October weather, I suppose.

It might be argued that the rain moving in tomorrow will have some connection to former hurricane Matthew, if you trace its origins, but meanwhile Hurricane Nicole has assumed a fierce category-4 wind field and is bearing down on Bermuda, with quite a large eye showing, which could mean an interval of destructive winds and waves followed by up to six hours of calmer weather and then a resumption of hurricane conditions. This would begin to set in by tonight local time.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny to mid-afternoon, with a high near 17 C, then it turned overcast, and rain has just begun. Today is likely to be quite wet and windy, Friday showery then Saturday we could be seeing very strong winds from a distant Pacific storm that is forming from the remnants of Typhoon Songda (currently approaching the International Date Line at 40 deg north).

M.T goes missing again! I'll just post his forecast here (taken from Irish Weather online) :

Friday, 14 October, 2016 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rain will slowly move north into west Munster, 5-15 mm could fall there, and southeast winds will become quite gusty after mid-day, reaching 50 to 60 km/hr. The rest of the country will not be quite as windy, and outbreaks of rain will be less widespread amounting to 2-5 mm. Highs will range from about 15 C in west Munster to 10-13 C in east Ulster and north Leinster.

TONIGHT ... Outbreaks of rain moving north, southeast winds 30-50 km/hr, mild with lows 8-10 C.

SATURDAY ... Overcast, rain at times, 5-10 mm for most, fog on hills and near south coast, winds becoming southerly 40-60 km/hr. Highs 14-16 C.

SUNDAY ... Further outbreaks of rain this time more concentrated in east, spreading northward, 5-10 mm on average. Lows 8-10 C and highs 14 to 16 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, mild, occasional showers turning heavy in parts of the west and north, moderate southwest winds 40-60 km/hr. Lows 10-12 C and highs 15-17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Breezy to windy (westerly) and turning cooler on Tuesday, remaining rather cool mid-week, but a drying trend, and there could be several dry days to follow with a bit of sunshine each day, some overnight fog, and generally light winds towards the end of the week. This may eventually be followed by a warmer southerly regime.

Nicole has been reduced to a cat-1 hurricane and will continue to make slow progress northeast for several days, eventually losing all tropical characteristics. My local weather on Thursday was very wet and foggy with somewhat stronger winds developing overnight into Friday morning. We're expecting further storminess in the region on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will stay in the 13-15 C range.

    Saturday, 15 October, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rain with embedded thunderstorms (10-20 mm potential) will continue to push north from central Leinster and midlands towards Ulster, to be followed by generally dry but cloudy and occasionally drizzly conditions. Highs 13-15 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy, some fog or mist, drizzle turning to steady rain in east, lows 8-10 C.

SUNDAY ... Occasional rain, mostly over eastern counties, fog or mist, highs about 13-15 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, moderate southwest winds developing, lows 8-10 C and highs 14-16 C.

TUESDAY ... Breezy, a few showers, moderate westerly winds and lows 3-5 C with highs 11-13 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, isolated showers, lows 1-3 C and highs about 12 or 13 C.

OUTLOOK ... Somewhat warmer towards the end of next week, with a few dry days, fog likely overnight, some hazy sunshine in daytime.

My local weather on Friday was stormy with wind gusts to 80 km/hr, a few trees down in the neighbourhood, and bursts of cold, pelting rain (20-30 mm) with a high of about 12 C. We have a lull in the action but an even stronger storm is developing west of Oregon, timed to move across us Saturday evening.

(not sure what's going on with the missing posts, thanks Carnacalla for catching that, I am going to check in around 0830 and see if this is still on the site)

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Outbreaks of thundery showers will continue to move north again this morning, some brief clearing may follow but there will be more scattered showers from Munster that will intensify and move northward, once again possibly with hail and thunder in a few locations. Rainfalls 10-20 mm and highs about 14 or 15 C.

TONIGHT ... Showers easing, some brief clear intervals where you may see the full moon. Lows 7-9 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, breezy (southwest 40-60 km/hr) and a few isolated showers mostly in Atlantic counties and Ulster. Highs 14-16 C.

    TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, breezy. Lows 3-6 C and highs 12-14 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Morning fog or low cloud, some mid-day sun, cool. Lows -1 to +4 C allowing scattered frost to develop. Highs 10-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Fog and frost possible in the morning, some sunshine at times during the day, lows -1 to +4 C and highs 10-13 C.

    FRIDAY ... Increasing cloud, lows 0-3 C and highs 11-14 C.

SATURDAY ... Heavy rain at times, strong southerly winds. Highs near 15 C.

    SUNDAY ... Showers, highs near 14 C.

Nicole is still a hurricane south of Newfoundland but will soon become just a regular but strong low, heading north towards the south tip of Greenland. It will then loop around and feed energy into the weather system expected next weekend in Ireland. Meanwhile, my local weather on Saturday was showery and blustery but the expected storm had a rather mixed outcome, there were pockets of very strong winds and high waves plus storm surges, and some places had only moderate gusts. The high was about 13 C. Eastern regions of North America enjoyed a very warm Saturday with highs near 25 C in the lower Great Lakes region.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy with some sunny intervals, more frequent in Leinster, and scattered showers in two clusters, one across the north and another moving across parts of Munster. About 3-7 mm could fall in some places. Highs 13-16 C. Moderate westerly winds 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Turning quite cold especially in Ulster where some snow could fall on higher summits. Generally dry further south but isolated showers with some soft hail. Lows 1-4 C north, 3-6 C south. Moderate westerly winds will continue in north, but calmer conditions inland south.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, breezy at times (west to northwest 30-50 km/hr).

Heavy rain (15-25 mm) at times, strong southeasterly winds developing, 50-70 km/hr. Highs near 15 C.

    SUNDAY ... Showers, highs near 14 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... An easterly flow will develop, some milder pulses may reach Ireland at times but then also some days will turn a bit colder, on average highs will remain in the 12-14 C range, and nights will be almost as mild unless cloud breaks. Some light rain will come and go.

My local weather was rather dull and showery with a chilly high of 12 C. Most of the eastern and central U.S. and adjacent southern Canada was very warm and will remain that way for several days as the storm track runs from Alberta to Hudson Bay. Central Alberta is getting a nasty mix of sleet and wet snow.

    Tuesday, 18 October, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals, breezy at times (west to northwest 30-50 km/hr except 50-70 km/hr in exposed parts of Ulster and Atlantic coasts). Squally showers will be scattered across northern counties with some hail possible there but some parts of the east and south will be largely dry. Highs 12-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, light winds. Fog and frost will be forming over some inland valleys. Lows -1 to +4 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Morning fog or low cloud, some mid-day sun, cool.
    Highs 10-13 C.

THURSDAY ... Fog and frost possible in the morning, some sunshine at times during the day, although rather cloudy in western counties with light rain possible late in the day near Mayo and Donegal coasts. Lows -1 to +4 C and highs 10-13 C.

FRIDAY ... Increasing cloud for most regions, southeast winds picking up to about 40 km/hr adding some chill in the afternoon, with lows 0-3 C, and highs 11-14 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Although rain is still part of the forecast, it may not prove to be as heavy as earlier expected, as it spreads quite slowly north; the main feature of the weekend weather will be rather gusty southeast winds that may feel quite cold even though temperatures will likely be near normal at about 12-14 C. Rainfall may be fairly light, more of an intermittent drizzle with dry intervals, except near the south coast where rain may be more persistent, but stay tuned as this guidance may change again closer to the weekend.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The cool southeast winds will shift more to south then southwest early next week, and could increase to strong (50-80 km/hr) by late Tuesday with a frontal system likely to bring a band of heavy rain before it turns quite a bit colder for a day or two. This seems to be the sort of pattern that may dig in for a while, occasional windy and wet frontal passages and large temperature fluctuations as they pass.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with light rain and a high near 12 C. There were some records set in eastern parts of North America with highs reaching 27 C in places.

    Wednesday, 19 October, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Morning fog or low cloud in some areas should gradually clear, with sunny intervals for most, and much lighter winds than recent days, a crisp autumn day with highs 11-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Clear except for some fog patches or low cloud, scattered light frosts, lows -1 to +4 C.

THURSDAY ... Fog and frost possible in the morning, some sunshine at times during the day, although rather cloudy in western counties with light rain possible late in the day near Mayo and Donegal coasts, with highs 10-13 C.

FRIDAY ... Increasing cloud for most regions, southeast winds picking up to about 40 km/hr adding some chill in the afternoon, with lows 0-3 C, and highs 11-14 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY ... The weekend is still a bit uncertain but most of the rain trying to move in from the south will probably be held off by the battling ridge of high pressure. Although that will weaken and be pushed to the north, allowing for gusty east to southeast winds, it should keep things relatively dry, and even sunny in some northern counties (probably more to the western side of the country). It will be less frosty because of the wind, so lows will range from 5 to 8 C and highs about 12 to 15 C. If the rain does manage to push in, it will spread across west Munster on Sunday, but this is not certain yet.

MONDAY ... This is the most likely time for any rain to break through the barrier of high pressure but even Monday could remain largely dry although cloudy across the south; winds will ease and become more southerly and the temperature range will be similar to the weekend, lows near 6 C and highs near 13 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Fair and rather mild in the daytime, frost or fog at night, at this point it appears that stronger southwest winds may hold off to the north except for parts of Ulster. Temperatures will range from near freezing at night to 11-15 C in the daytime except in a few spots where persistent fog could hold these daytime readings down to 7-9 C.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with light rain, fog and a high of 13 C.

Super-Typhoon Haima (known in the Philippines as Lawin) is about to crash into northeast Luzon at category 5 intensity, luckily this is a very sparsely populated rain forest region but once it crosses the eastern hills it will encounter populated areas, bringing cat-3 winds and heavy rainfalls across all of northern Luzon later today (it is early afternoon local time).

    Thursday, 20 October, 2016

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Despite a large shield of higher cloud, the sun will manage to break through at times in most places, perhaps more frequently in Leinster. With the very light winds prevailing all day, it will be relatively pleasant although crisp and autumnal at 11-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloud will be on the increase again, but some inland eastern and southern rural areas could see light frosts, lows will generally fall to 4-7 C but possibly 1-3 C in east and south.

FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, possibly a few spits of drizzle near south coast, and feeling rather cool in a raw southeast breeze 30-50 km/hr. Highs 11-14 C.

WEEKEND and MONDAY ... The models are converging on the "almost but not quite" solution for rainfall that will hang around to the south and make the occasional slight move inland near the south coast, while it remains largely dry in most places further north. Skies will tend to be overcast in the south and partly cloudy at times in the north, but even there, cloud will probably prevail. Each day will have southeast to east winds 40-60 km/hr and these could increase to 50-70 km/hr at times near the south coast. Lows will be 5-8 C and highs 10-13 C, and even that narrow range may be generous (could see some places staying very close to a given temperature in that range, night and day).

TUESDAY ... Some breaks in the overcast may develop as the southern weather systems fade out, and before an Atlantic front has time to push in. Lows 3-7 C and highs 11-14 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Overcast, showers or (for northwest) periods of rain, rather breezy, lows near 7 C and highs near 13 C. Strong westerly winds in northern counties.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... A sprawling high will set up over Ireland after the mid-week frontal passage and this may bring some dense fog at night, hazy sun breaking through low cloud and fog in the daytime hours. Lows will average 1-3 C, with some frosts inland south and east. Highs will average 10-13 C but could be slightly lower where low cloud persists. This settled spell may continue past Hallowe'en, in which case, on that evening you can expect chilly but calm or perhaps by then a light northerly flow because there are signs that the high will shift back to the west of Ireland in early November which will probably end the fog at night and with better mixing allow daytime temperatures to creep up into mid-teens at times.

By the way, I am sticking to my earlier stated concept of a colder second half of November with the chance of some early snowfalls this year. For the time being I am going to advertise this as a half-strength version of 2010, so not quite the epic cold and snowfest we saw that year in late November and December, but probably nowhere near as mild as in 2015 during those months (aside from maybe one spell in early November).

My local weather improved very slightly on Wednesday to partly cloudy but rain has begun again this evening here. Highs reached 30 C in parts of the eastern U.S. setting daily records in a few places.

The typhoon crossed Luzon and was downgraded to about category-1 by the time it came back out over the East China Sea. The track now appears to threaten Hong Kong or nearby parts of China in a couple of days.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few brighter intervals in eastern counties, occasional light showers this morning in Connacht and west Ulster, only trace to 1 mm amounts expected, highs generally 11-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, patchy drizzle in south, lows 6-8 C.

SATURDAY ... Mostly cloudy, chance of some brighter intervals in the north, rather cold southeast winds 30-50 km/hr, highs 11-13 C.

SUNDAY ... Brisk easterly winds 50-70 km/hr, rain is possible near the south coast but is still not expected to make much northward progress, but patchy light rain may affect the east coast at times. Lows 7-9 C and highs 11-13 C.

MONDAY ... Remaining rather breezy and overcast, any rain should end by about mid-day in the south, and more sunshine could appear by afternoon. Lows 5-8 C and highs 11-14 C.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, winds not as strong, morning frosts or fog patches. Lows -1 to +3 C and highs 11-14 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Breezy to windy with some light rain at times in north, lows about 6 C and highs 12-15 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The north may remain rather breezy and cloudy with a bit more rain at times, otherwise the trend should be towards settled weather with light frosts inland south and relatively mild days with highs of 11-14 C and some sunshine lasting until about the end of the month; a somewhat cloudier and slightly unsettled regime will follow although it won't be a large change in the weather as we enter November.

My local weather became partly cloudy with some welcome afternoon sunshine and highs near 13 C on Thursday. An area of showers east of the Bahamas is being monitored for the next tropical storm but so far it appears uncertain whether it can form or just remain a weak area of low pressure. The next name on the 2016 list is Otto.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, chance of some brighter intervals in the north, rather cold southeast winds 30-50 km/hr, highs 11-13 C.

TONIGHT and SUNDAY ... Brisk easterly winds 50-70 km/hr, rain is possible near the south coast at least by afternoon or evening, but is still not expected to make much northward progress, except that patchy light rain may affect the east coast at times towards evening. Some sunshine is possible morning and mid-day especially in Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster. Lows 7-9 C and highs 11-13 C.

MONDAY ... Remaining rather breezy and overcast, any rain should end by about mid-day in the south, and more sunshine could appear by afternoon. Lows 5-8 C and highs 11-14 C.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, winds not as strong except southwest 30-50 km/hr by afternoon in the north, morning frosts or fog patches. Lows -1 to +3 C and highs 11-14 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Breezy to windy with some light rain at times in north, lows about 6 C and highs 12-15 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Dry and mild for several days, possibly beyond Hallowe'en and the first of November, highs generally 13-16 C. There may be more cloud than clear skies, but any clearing at night would easily lead to fog and local frost. The longer-term charts look quite active when this quiet spell comes to an end in early November (at the moment that is timed for about the 4th to 6th).

My local weather on Friday was overcast with occasional rain, and the high was about 13 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Becoming rather windy (easterly 40-60 km/hr, higher gusts possible near south coast), rain holding off to south before edging onto coast this evening, but light showers may develop near east coast mid-day, feeling rather cold despite some sunshine at times, highs 11-13 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast with a few breaks, showers or light rain in east and south, east to northeast winds 30-50 km/hr, lows 6-8 C.

MONDAY ... Morning cloud and scattered outbreaks of light rain, then clearing from north, lows 4-7 C and highs 11-13 C.

TUESDAY ... Morning fog or frost possible, lows -1 to +4 C then daytime hazy sunshine, more cloudy towards northwest coasts, highs 11-15 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will be breezy and mild with partly cloudy skies, some chance of light rain or drizzle near north coasts, lows 4-7 C and highs about 14 C.

OUTLOOK ... The dry, mild spell will perhaps persist to the end of the month or close, guidance is a bit scattered on timing a colder northwest to northerly flow now expected to begin in early November or even the last day of this month in some models. So expect highs to continue mid-teens or so through next weekend, and possibly a day or two beyond that, but eventually some rather cold weather is coming along (highs would likely drop back to 8-10 C).

My local weather on Saturday here was pleasant with a bit of sunshine at times and highs near 14 C. Rain has returned since sunset though.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Overcast with a few more outbreaks of light rain but not very widespread or heavy, followed by slow and partial clearing as winds slowly subside (NE 40-60 km/hr until afternoon). Rather cold in the wind, highs 11-13 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, some fog or frost possible where skies clear more completely, lows -1 to +4 C.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, longer sunny intervals seem more likely in Ulster and Connacht as weak remnants of the frontal activity to the south remain off the southeast coast, although without much risk of further showers. Highs 12-15 C.

WEDNESDAY to SUNDAY is now looking fairly mild but cloudy with occasional slight rainfalls here or there, in general mostly dry with only 1-2 mm of rain at the most, and highs near 15 C.

MONDAY (31st) may remain mild with increasing chance of rain and stronger southerly winds. The outlook keeps changing for the period Monday to Wed 2 Nov as models try to assess how strong a colder regime setting up after that will actually turn out, but it certainly looks like a considerably colder period following this transition period with winds becoming mostly northerly for several days and temperatures falling a few degrees below normal, which would imply highs of about 7 to 9 C and at least slight frosts, possibly some rather sleety showers at times.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast with low cloud (fog on hills) but no rain and highs near 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Frost and fog patches in some low-lying parts of the north this morning should clear slowly, then most places partly cloudy to sunny, hazy and becoming rather mild, highs 12-15 C.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, more frost and fog is possible but this time across inland south, as breezes further north will keep it milder, lows in south -1 to 4 and in north 4-7 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY will produce similar and pleasant autumn weather, generally dry apart from some patchy drizzle, some sunny intervals each day, lows 3-7 C and highs 12-15 C.

SATURDAY will continue very mild in most areas during the day, although there may be a higher risk of frost in the inland southeast, otherwise lows will continue in the 3-7 C range and highs 13-16 C.

SUNDAY will be very mild with increasing cloud and some showers developing, lows 7-10 C and highs 14-17 C.

MONDAY is expected to turn a bit colder with winds west to northwest 40 to 60 km/hr and passing showers, lows 3-5 C and highs 8-11 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK takes us into November, the first two days look rather mild again, then windy and colder for several days, and a fast flow situation developing with rain at times, eventually a sharp drop in temperatures about a week into November with a chance of mixed wintry showers developing; current charts would certainly support snow on hilltops if not lower down, but more likely sleety hail showers near sea level. But this is almost two weeks away and could change closer to the time.

My local weather on Monday was overcast but mild with a high near 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with some sunny intervals developing, a few outbreaks of light rain or drizzle near northwest coasts, mild. Highs 13-16 C.

TONIGHT ... Some cloud, fog or mist, better chance of clear intervals in south, mild. Lows 6-10 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue mostly dry and mild, some further outbreaks of light rain or drizzle near north and west coasts, but amounts generally trace to 2 mm in those areas. Highs each day 14-17 C. Overnight lows on Friday also around 6-10 C.

The WEEKEND including Monday will be very mild, perhaps warm if the sun manages to get through layers of low cloud, so generally misty but dry except for some outbreaks of rain close to Atlantic coasts (these may tend to hover offshore much of the time). Highs each day 15-18 C. Increasing chances of light rain mid-day and afternoon Monday, turning a bit cooler in the north by evening (7-9 C).

Into early November, it will remain reasonably mild after a slight drop in temperatures around the 1st and 2nd, where highs may be 9-12 C. Milder again for a few days, eventually becoming quite windy with heavier outbreaks of rain. The longer-range charts for about two weeks from now currently show much colder weather developing then, we'll have to keep an eye on how persistent that signal becomes.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with a little light rain at times, highs were quite mild near 17 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, mild, occasional drizzle but generally dry. Highs 14-17 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, some light rain or drizzle near west coast and in parts of Ulster, very mild, lows 9-12 C.

FRIDAY ... Cloudy with a few brighter intervals, some isolated areas of light rain near northwest coast, highs 14-17 C.

SATURDAY ... Morning fog, partly cloudy by mid-day, mild. Lows 7-10 C and highs 14-17 C.

SUNDAY ... Cloudy and very mild, some light rain near west coast, lows 7-10 and highs 14-17 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, slight risk of showers in southwest mainly, turning a little cooler in northeast breezes across Ulster and north Connacht. Highs for most will remain 13-15 C but could be closer to 11 C in the north.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, morning frost or fog, lows -1 to +4 C and highs about 9 to 12 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Becoming a little milder again, highs 10-13 C, with a gradual increase in cloud followed by intervals of light rain towards the end of the week (around 3-4 Nov) then turning somewhat colder. Charts are still showing potential for modified wintry conditions developing mid-month but time scale is not yet into the "reliable" range so just a hint of colder weather at this stage.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with some rain at times, and the high was about 13 C. The warm spell in eastern North America has been pushed into the southeast states by cooler high pressure over the northeastern states, and an area of heavy rain is advancing from the lower Great Lakes; Chicago had almost 50 mm of rain on Wednesday setting a daily record. It is cool enough for some of this heavy rain to turn to snow over higher parts of New England and perhaps central New York, Pennsylvania, although more likely to stay rain near the Atlantic coasts.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, some fog or mist, patchy drizzle, lows 8-11 C.

SATURDAY ... Morning fog, partly cloudy by mid-day, mild. Highs 14-17 C.

    TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, colder in northerly breezes 30-50 km/hr, lows 2 to 6 C and highs about 9 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Morning fog and frost, some sunshine during the day, rather cold. Lows -1 to +3 C and highs 7-10 C.

OUTLOOK ... Slightly milder again later in the week, light rain, then turning colder around the weekend of 5-6 November.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with occasional light rain, highs near 13 C. The heavy rain in eastern regions (snow over hills) moved to the east coast and it was quite a wet day in New York City. A surge of very warm air for late October is moving out of the desert southwest region towards the central plains states where highs may reach 32 C in places today and over the weekend.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Morning fog patches, then partly cloudy by mid-day, mild. Rain is possible by afternoon near outer Atlantic coasts but most places should enjoy a dry day. Highs 14-17 C.

TONIGHT ... Mostly cloudy, fog or mist, lows 7-11 C.

SUNDAY ... Cloudy and very mild, some light rain near west coast, highs 14-17 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, slight risk of showers in southwest mainly, turning a little cooler in northeast breezes across Ulster and north Connacht. Highs for most will remain 13-15 C but could be closer to 11 C in the north. Southeast breezes will increase during the day to 30-50 km/hr.

TUESDAY ... Sunny intervals, isolated showers, colder in northerly breezes 30-50 km/hr, lows 2 to 6 C and highs about 9 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Morning fog and frost, some sunshine during the day, rather cold. Lows -1 to +3 C and highs 7-10 C.

OUTLOOK ... Slightly milder again later in the week, light rain developing, then turning colder around the weekend of 5-6 November. Current models are once again emphasizing a colder theme towards mid-November. The coldest days on these charts would produce highs of about 5 C with morning lows of about -3 C.
There would be some risk of wintry showers and snow could fall either in Ireland or parts of Britain. Confidence is not high on this outcome yet though.

My local weather on Friday was partly cloudy, dry and mild with highs near 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few brighter intervals, rather misty over hills, mild. Highs 14-16 C. Slight drizzle may be noted but not much accumulation is expected. Note, new moon occurs today at 5:38 p.m. (GMT).

TONIGHT ... Cloudy intervals, mild, increasing southeast breeezes 30-50 km/hr and lows 8-12 C.

MONDAY ... Cloudy with some sunny breaks, risk of brief showers developing in north, winds generally southeast 30-50 km/hr backing to northeast late in the afternoon across Ulster with a gradual drop in temperatures there, otherwise highs 13-15 C.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few brief passing showers most likely in north, winds northerly 30-50 km/hr adding some chill, lows 2-6 C and highs 7-10 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sharp frosts and fog in morning, sunny intervals daytime, cold with lows -3 to +2 C and highs 7-10 C.

THURSDAY ... Mostly cloudy, somewhat milder, light rain developing, lows near 5 C and highs near 11 C.

OUTLOOK ... Turning quite cold from Friday 4th, as winds become generally north to northeast for about a week. Highs will be in the 4-8 C range and although nights will be rather cloudy some frosts will develop. Mixed wintry showers are quite possible on higher ground. Hail showers are most likely near sea level, but each day will also have some dry spells and limited sunshine that might be quite substantial near west coast. There are indications that this cold spell will relax its grip after about the 12th of November but milder weather will be short-lived with more cold to follow.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with some rain in the morning, about 10 mm fell, then partly cloudy before sunset. Highs reached 12 C. Record warm temperatures are predicted for parts of the western and central U.S. now to about 2nd of November, highs may reach 27 C as far north as Nebraska and even South Dakota. Normal values are closer to 10-15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy, a few brief passing showers most likely in north, winds northerly 30-50 km/hr adding some chill, highs 7-10 C except closer to 12 C near south coast.

TONIGHT ... Partial clearing, risk of sharp frosts after midnight, lows -3 to +2 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sharp frosts and fog in morning, sunny intervals daytime, cold with lows -3 to +2 C and highs 7-10 C.

THURSDAY ... Mostly cloudy, somewhat milder, light rain developing, lows near 5 C and highs near 11 C. Rainfalls about 2-5 mm.

FRIDAY ... Windy and cold with passing showers that may turn wintry on hills, hail quite likely at lower elevations. Winds northerly 40-60 km/hr. Lows near 3 C and highs 7-9 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Windy and cold, wintry showers on hills, hail showers possible at lower elevations, some sunny intervals in the mix, gusty north to northeast winds. Lows near 2 C and highs 7-10 C. This cold weather will persist a few days into the following week. Monday will actually turn even colder in Britain but will remain at about the same intensity for Ireland; Britain will also have stronger northerly winds at times as low pressure forms over the North Sea.

OUTLOOK ... There are indications that this cold spell will relax its grip after about the 10th of November and temperatures could peak at around 12 C during the brief warmer interval as winds turn more westerly ahead of the next surge of colder air likely to push south after mid-month.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with rain that turned heavy at times during the morning. October has been the least sunny (dullest) October on record in this region (Vancouver, BC). It was also one of the wettest. A smarter person than me would probably (a) figure out a way of getting all this water to the southwestern U.S. and (b) then figure out a way of getting himself there too. I suppose (a) could lead to (b).

Another point of interest, a "Medicane" formed on Monday southeast of Sicily and made a landfall in southern Greece before dying out over southern Turkey. This is a phenomenon which seems to happen about once or twice each autumn on average and the intensity of these storms is often about that of a strong Atlantic tropical storm or a weak hurricane.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Early frost will gradually clear, then partly sunny and quite cold with light winds and highs 7-10 C. Some cloud and drizzle may be found near north coast.

TONIGHT ... Increasing cloud, light rain beginning in the west around midnight, lowest readings 2-5 C evening or near midnight east then rising to 5-8 C.

THURSDAY ... Mostly cloudy, somewhat milder, light rain developing, and highs near 11 C. Rainfalls about 2-5 mm. Moderate southwest winds near exposed coasts but not a very windy day otherwise.

Ireland should see a slow moderation in temperatures from Monday to Wednesday reaching perhaps 10 C by mid-week.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The pattern around mid-month looks variable and generally rather cold with spells of westerly winds alternating with spells of northerly winds, and temperatures near normal in the first case, somewhat below in the northerly spells. Rainfall is likely to be a little below November normals although small amounts are likely most days with sleet on higher ground at times. Hail showers may be fairly frequent too.

My local weather on Tuesday had a few brief breaks in the overcast then back to periods of rain, highs near 10 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Intervals of light rain will gradually spread from west to east, but this band will not last all day at any given location and the rainfalls are relatively light (3-7 mm). Some breaks in the overcast may appear both before the rain arrives and after it leaves. Highs will reach 10-12 C.

TONIGHT ... Showers developing, windy and turning colder. Winds westerly veering to northerly 40-60 km/hr. Lows 3-5 C.

FRIDAY to MONDAY ... Each day will be fairly cold and windy with passing showers that may contain hail or (on higher terrain) sleet. Winds will be northerly 40-60 km/hr at times, more brisk near coasts. Highs each day will be around 7 or 8 C and lows about 1-3 C. Slight frosts could develop in a few spots in central counties.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Turning gradually milder for several days to end of next week in westerly winds, some light rain at times, highs near 10 C. Then another surge of rather cold and windy weather will develop around mid-month with highs around 6 or 7 C. There will be a slightly greater risk of wintry showers in this next cold spell. The pattern looks like it will continue in this alternating mode of mild westerly and cold northwest to north flows but the average will be cold for November.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with some heavy rain at times in the morning, just cloudy by afternoon, and highs were near 12 C. The very warm spell in eastern North America is slowly losing its intensity although colder air will arrive gradually in stages; by next week however there could be some snow flurries in parts of the Great Lakes and northeastern states.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, passing showers, turning colder by afternoon and evening when some of the showers may change to hail at low elevations and sleet on hills. Winds westerly 40-60 km/hr veering to northwest 50-70 km/hr. Highs 9-11 C.

TONIGHT ... Breezy and cold, some passing showers of hail or sleet, lows 1-3 C. Winds northerly 30-50 km/hr.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, some streamers of mixed wintry showers likely in north, and near both east and west coasts. More sunshine is possible in south. Cold winds, northerly 40-60 km/hr and highs 7-10 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, further wintry showers in bands more concentrated on east coast as winds shift a little more to north-northeast at 40-60 km/hr. Other wintry showers could fall in higher parts of west Ulster and north Connacht, even west Munster. Morning lows near 1 or 2 C and some light frosts, then mid-day highs only 6-9 C.

MONDAY ... Sharp frosts possible with some clearing and lows -3 to +2 C, but a few isolated wintry showers likely too, then sunny intervals, not as windy, cold. Highs about 8 C.

TUESDAY ... Light rain at times, somewhat milder. Highs near 10 C.

OUTLOOK ... Rather mild for the second half of the week, highs could reach 12 C by Thursday, then quite windy and turning colder in stages. A variable and fast-moving pattern will follow with large fluctuations in temperature as winds vary between westerly and northerly. Some of the colder spells could produce snow especially on northern hills.

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy but thankfully dry for a change, with a high near 12 C. Some eastern regions of North America had record highs, for example Washington D.C. (28 C) but cooler air is slowly pushing south across the Great Lakes region.

OUTLOOK ... Further large swings in temperature are likely as the flow continues to alternate between mild westerly and cold northwesterly intervals.

My local weather on Friday was cloudy, generally dry, and very mild with highs near 18 C. Rain has just started as we approach midnight here.
